This hotel really is one of a kind. The walls are decked with original Shadow Art puppet artworks, mostly created by Maomao, the extremely talented artist who can be seen daily in the indoor courtyard area working at his desk. The staff are eternally helpful, particularly Cathy, and will go as far as possible to help you with queries. We needed to exchange travellers cheques, and they phoned various banks to make sure we could change them there, then gave us directions.

The Shadow Art performances are not to be missed. These short, free performances are held twice a week there to a small audience, and they're great. The puppeteers are very talented...and bizzarely, double up as the hotel staff.

The location you'll be sure to find alarming at first (in the middle of the hutongs, meaning alleys, in Beijing), but you quickly realise it's really fantastic, its a beautiful area with 2 lakes to go boating on, many restaurants nearby, and a friendly atmosphere.

The price is incredible for what it is, a real steal.

One downside is one day at 6:30am some people started doing building work outside very loudly, woke us up, but that was just the one day and presumably doesn't happen all the time!

The only other downside is the food. Breakfast is free, but limited, and there's no restaurant, so eating out is a requirement unless you buy some instant noodles at the reception desk!

Great location in a quiet hutong only 15 minutes walk from the bottom of Hou Hai lake. Be aware that only a small number of bedrooms, overlooking the atrium, have any natural light, the others have none. Breakfasts simple but adequate. Very helpful and friendly staff. Getting taxis back to the hotel is difficult even with the hotel's card as the drivers don't like hutongs, so get the hotel staff to write own the nearby junction of Deshengmennei Dajie and Dingfu Jie (5 mins walk) which all the taxi drivers know and have no problem with. We ate at the nearby No Name restaurant one night (Yunnan cuisine), an interesting 15 minute walk through the hutongs, which we can thoroughly recommend. The twice weekly puppet show is a must, particularly being shown back stage afterwards.

Room Tip: Only a few bedrooms have any natural light.

Was at Wangfujing area first followed by this plc with intention of staying in a hutong area. Hotel's architecture and thematic design is gorgeous. Service is excellent with friendly and helpful staffs, with most english speaking. Rooms are cozy though challenge of space constraint. Location wise, the first time is challenging as its located within the hutong area but subsequently with the great infrastructure its easy to move ard, <20m to ping ann stat / beihai north stat. Wonderful experience in all!

We stayed at the standard room from 22nd to 24th Oct 2012. It is a shadow art themed boutique hotel and the sister hotel of shichahai sandalwood hotel which we stayed there as well. This hotel is situated in a small alley in the Shichahai area, our taxi driver had some difficulty finding the place. Hotel lobby looks chic. Our room is slightly small though. Location is slightly far from the tube station but we didnt encounter any problems getting cabs. The staffs are polite and very helpful !!! Plus point no.1, it is about 5mins walk to the famous Li Family Imperial Cuisine restaurant which serves great food! Plus point no. 2, there are free shadow art performance for hotel guests on certain days of the week, dont miss it.

We stayed for a total of 6 nights. The first room we had looked over the courtyard; it was spacious, clean and quiet(214). Our second room (we went to Xi'an overnight) was noisy (201).
Breakfast was pretty awful.Fried eggs were luke warm and many of the dishes not suitable for Western guests ( congee, pickles etc), I struggled to eat enough to set me up for a morning of sight seeing.
The puppet show was sweet and the hotel also put on a dumpling making session.
We felt the staff were well intentioned but their English was not always good enough. We struggled to use the wifi and one staff member tried to help me by shaking my iPhone to get the wifi to work!!
We had difficulties getting a taxi to bring us back as the roads in the hutong are sometimes impassable.
We had real problems finding anywhere to eat on the main road but we turned right out of the hotel and walked for 5 minutes and came to the lake where there was a big restaurant on the left with photos of dishes in the menu and smaller cafes to the right.
One evning as we walked back we came upon local people dancing in an open area to music on a cd player- all very synchronised with a few free stylers! Lovely to watch!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms which overlook road - we had diggers late at night and early in the morning!
