We really enjoyed our stay at the old Beijing square hotel. It felt like a genuine Chinese experience - there was even a tai chi master staying and conducting sessions regularly in the courtyard. The staff were lovely and went out of their way to help and write notes in Chinese for taxis etc. the beds were super hard, sheets not changed in the four days we were there, the shower didn't drain properly and you could definitely hear your neighbours. But we loved having something other than a sterile, international hotel experience.

Please note that the location of the hotel on the tripadvisor map is incorrect. The hotel location is about halfway down the marked street.

The hotel itself is really nice. It's down a small alley so it's quite tranquil compared to the noise on the main street. The rooms are nice, modern and very clean. The common bathroom and showers are clean most of the time.

Rooms can be noisy if you have noisy neighbours. Also, the rooms can be quite bright at night as the leave the lights on outside.

The staff are very helpful and can speak OK english. On a number of occasions they wrote down chinese notes for me to help find places of interest.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have ensuite bathrooms.

The hotel is nicely located in a hutong that is still full of real chinese life (not very touristic, genuine). Once you have entered the hotel, its a nice and quiet place to stay, with breakfast, friendly helpful staff that speaks english and helps you to plan your trips.
My room even had a small patio/ minigarden on the back. The room was very spacious and clean, only small negative point is that due to the historic building, you could hear your roomneighbours sometimes.
