“Great Hotel Little Hard to Find”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2014

Found this hotel based on previous reviews on trip advisor. I knew it was hard to find but I armed myself with a colored map of the location. At the airport the taxi driver you could tell he did not want to take us because we are American but he did know the area but not the hotel. It cost us 140 yuan. He wanted to charge us 320 but I knew to have them run the meter. My daughter came later and who can speak the language cost 90. Yuan. So be prepared. We got dropped off on a busy road but go down the alley it is a large White building and the name is on top past a government building on the right side. We loved the location a true neighborhood feeling. We shopped at the local markets and ate nearby. The subway is very close. The hotel rooms are very large. They have coffee and tea in the room for you. The hardest part of the room if you are sharing is the window from the bathroom to the bedroom it has a blind but does not close either way you switch the blind .

Room Tip: Ask for a non smoking room

Original design in modern well equipped rooms. Isolation could be improved as well as the basic buffet breakfast but the general impression is good. Location is quite nice in the middle of a very typical Hutong in a "hot" street of Beijing! Don't forget to leave a card in the energy box of the room, otherwise it will be freezing when you come back! Wonderful Hot pot restaurant 50 meters right from the hotel.

Room Tip: Upper floor overlooking the typical surroundings

This hotel is a decent launching point for visits to the Forbidden City and other Beijing central city sites. The hotel is nicely furnished and the rooms are comfortable. Like most of the hotel beds in China, the mattresses area very firm.

Self-pay pharmaceuticals are stocked near the sink. An unusual twist to amenities was the inclusion of single dose packs (priced steeply for last minute hotel purchasing) of the little blue pill and an assortment of fancy prophylactic condoms. Weird. Apparently no prescription for Viagra is required here.

The water in the sink and shower smells a bit like sewer water and it made our skin itch. But everyone warns you not to drink water anywhere in China (airports often have filtered, purified water fountains). Don't even use the local water to brush your teeth.

The hotel is close to several shops and small restaurants. The Dongsi subway station and a large Wu-Mart (supermarket) are just a five minute walk. Beijing's subways are pretty easy to navigate and are cheap. There is free wifi in the lobby, but not in the rooms. Though the hotel staff is friendly, very few speak any English at all. Ordering hotel restaurant food was a slight challenge, but they found a waiter that could take an order in English. Hey, it's their country, right!

The sleep quality was very poor due to large groups of domestic guests. They were quite loud, partying into the night, up early, with doors propped open. The "no smoking" floor designations meant little. The hallways and rooms smelled of smoke and fresh low-quality (really stinky) cigarette smoke wafted into our room from under the door. That may or may not be a common occurrence in the hotel.

This isn't a bad deal if you're willing to wear earplugs and know what you're getting into. One other possible downside is that the hotel is in an alley in the hutongs. Several taxi drivers refused to drive us when they saw the address. I think that they were just unwilling to try to navigate to the place, not that it is a bad neighborhood. For me, the location was part of the charm.

Room Tip: Specifically ask to be placed away from tour groups.

I checked out from the hotel and hung out at the lobby chatting with friends. A staff member approached me and communicated that I left something related to my phone in the room. With her imperfect English, it took me a while to understand, but she tried hard to communicate that I left my converter in the room. HOW KIND is she! She could walk away with first attempt, but she was persistent!

Pros:
- Location: easy to get to subway station and few restaurants and few convenient stores.
- Room condition: Bed, carpet, etc. Overall condition was good.
- Service: Kind, Friendly.
- Bathrobe, slippers, a safe in the room.

Cons:
- Location: could be better... it's not well known hotel, so taxi drivers had a hard time finding it.
- Restaurants in the neighborhood: No English speaking staff or menu available in the neighborhood. Hutong is a government housing district(residential district), so it's good to see the local's lives, but not so great for foreigners without Chinese skill. If you speak Chinese, it won't matter.
- No bath tub in the room.

Room Tip: Request a high floor, quiet, non-smoking room.

The Royal Phoenix, part of the Best Western chain, is a quality hotel tucked away in a hutong a short walk from two subway stops which can quickly get you to major attractions. We felt safe out at night despite the off-street location. The rooms and beds are nice and clean. The breakfast buffet was good and plentiful. One negative was that many of the staff could not converse or understand English despite the majority of the guests appearing to be westerners. That made it difficult to do simple transactions like currency exchange or posting postcards and letters. Everyone, however, was very friendly.

Royal Phoenix Hotel is located down a narrow lane in one of the remaining hutongs, an original neighbourhood of mixed residence and business. The hutongs are fast disappearing as modern construction takes over. I selected this hotel for the location in the hutong, also central to the main attractions such as Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. When I booked it was part of the Best Western chain so I could gain points and also use Best Western gift certificates purchased with my points however I had discovered by chance on trip advisor just a few weeks before our trip, that travelers were reporting that the hotel was no longer part of the BW chain. Funnily enough, I still received an email reminder notification about my booking from BW just the week before our trip! The hotel is modern and has a very grand entry and lobby which seems a little incongruent for the location on the simple narrow hutong lane. I was prepared for what might be a bit of confusion on checkin based on recent trip advisor reviews. Reception staff were friendly and welcoming and spoke English, but, sure enough, did not have record of my reservation! I had written confirmation of the room booked, rate and breakfast inclusions which they copied and then proceeded with the booking. They did not have any king rooms available so put us in the same room category but with two large single beds. Each bed was almost double size so this was just fine for us. The modern, clean room included comfortable seating, a desk area, fridge, coffee and tea making supplies, safe, and four piece bathroom, cable internet; free wifi is only available in the lobby. A little strange that the bathroom tub/shower wall is a large window into the bedroom but there was a vertical blind which we closed. Buffet breakfast was included in our price and was served either in the large dining room or in the lobby. Choices included a mix of Asian and Western food...plenty of good food. We were happy with this choice of hotel.

We booked our tour through Dragon Delights a first class company, who did all they could to give us the best time ever in China.
This hotel is found down a side street that to some may find a little intimidating but do not be afraid to get out there and explore, the side street is safe. if you leave the hotel and turn right walk to the end of the street turn left and walk up to the vast shopping centre. or leave the hotel turn left then right and meet the shopping centre from a difference avenue, the night food market is here too.
The hotel is comfortable, clean, with large walk in showers. colour TV and room service. English is limited but understandable. The breakfast whilst is adequate is pretty limited for the western palate. There was a wedding going on when we arrived, however I can confirm that even though the hotel was full there were no problems in obtaining anything we asked for
Would stay here again

Room Tip: Choose a high level room to avoid noise
