Grand Hotel Beijing

Reviewed 16 July 2014

We were fortunate to stay in the stunning Grand Hotel during a recent trip to Beijing. The Hotel is located only a few hundred metres away from Tianamen Square and the Forbidden City. A few metres the other way and you are in one of the main shopping districts of Beijing with its trendy outlets and great restaurants.

The staff at the Hotel are excellent with a good command of English. The breakfast buffet is a real treat so make sure you allow plenty of time to enjoy the relaxing start to the day. We enjoyed a few quiet drinks at the patio bar and listened to the guy playing the grand piano - a wonderful finish to a full day of sightseeing and walking.

The rooms are very spacious and very 'grand' with all the necessary mod cons. The beds are huge and very comfortable. Make sure you enjoy the pillows made of silk and guaranteed to give a good night's sleep. Wifi is available throughout the hotel and was easily accessible from our motel room.

Make sure you ask for a room that overlooks the Forbidden City as it is a real treat to open the morning blinds and marvel at the beauty of this stunning landmark.

Grand Hotel Beijing - full marks from us. Well done. We will be back.

Room Tip: Get one that overlooks the Forbidden City

Grand Hotel Beijing
This hotel is all about location! Walking distance to the Forbidden City, Tiannamen and the Museum.

The Hotel itself is nice but maybe not so 'Grand' anymore. If you are in Beijing as a tourist rather than for business it is great as it has a little more of a 'Chinese' feel to the place with its architecture and appointments and certainly a lot less Western guests which we like.
Rooms are very nice, roomy, clean and well appointed. We paid for a forbidden City view and were not disappointed. The view is of the rooftops of the Forbidden City. Lovely to sit and marvel at after a long days walk around the historic site. (If you want more luxury consider the Regent see our separate post - we split up our stay to give us different experiences).
The staff at the Grand were very friendly and could speak reasonable English.

Tips...
Print off the name of your hotel in Chinese Characters before you arrive in a Beijing. Make the print size large as taxi drivers don't always have great eyesight.

Local taxis may try and rip you off. Ask for the meter before you get in the cab - it is a digital screen that is fitted into the car's dash board. Never take taxis outside of tourist attractions. Walk a hundred meters away from the site and you will easily find an honest driver. We had no issues.

The restaurants near the hotel assume everyone wants Peking Duck. If you push back on them they will eventually bring out a picture menu with English descriptions.

If you are vegetarian learn the Chinese phrase for ' I don't eat meat'. Said - Wor bu Chur Rou'. (You can find YouTube clips that will give you the pronunciation.). Using the phrase 'I am a vegetarian in Mandarin did not mean anything to them. Not eating meat also covers no fish.

If you like this post see our other posts that we did on our trip to Beijing. We were independent travellers and found getting around Beijing wasn't as hard as we had thought!

Excellent hotel for Forbidden City. We had a deluxe room with view of FC, but most days the pollution is too bad to get a clear view. It is next door to the convention center, which can be reached without going outside, The convention center is well worth touring for the artifacts and building itself. There is a back door that is a shortcut to the hotel.

The location is also very near the subway and the main shopping street with mega-malls and the old style food street , which shouldn't be missed.

The hotel is in a very expensive district, older (and I suspect much cheaper than surrounding hotels) but with charming Chinese furnishings. For the most part well maintained. Carpet was clean but worn, shower head unruly and could use replacement.

Staff helpful for what they knew, but did not have any information on tours except the two they sold. We found all of the hotel restaurants too expensive to consider -- more geared to expense account travelers (e.g. breakfast buffet $30 US per person).

Room Tip: Some rooms face the inner "indoor courtyard" of the hotel, and appeared to have small terr...

The hotel had a wonderful selection of breakfast ... usually the price isn't included in the cost of the hotel.

Within walking distance to all of the sites and front desk staff were helpful. We were given room which had great views of the Forbidden City.

The only problem was the water from the shower made the bathroom floors very wet.

This hotel is very near the Forbidden City and Tienanmen Square. The breakfast buffet huge is fantastic. The rooms were clean and nice but the bed was very hard. I love the authentic Chinese look to the building. Service was very good.

Room Tip: I stayed in a suite and the bathroom was huge. Shower is separate from the tub.

That was one of the best hotel stayings in my life!
The hotel is just great: it is located in the very city centre of Beijing: a 5-10 minute walk to Wangfujing Street on one hand and Tian'anmen Square and Forbidden City on the other hand.
The hotel's personnel is very friendly and they also have their own exhange office at the reception, which is very convenient, especially considering that the exchange rates are very good. The hotel has its own swimming pool, recreational area, sauna and gym. The room was good and with a great view on the Forbidden City - although we were not supposed to stay at the room with the city view, the manager at the reception told us that the room was currently vacant and we could stay there. So, everything was just made for our comfort staying. I can absolutely say that this hotel is a very great choice!

P.S. there was only one minus during our stay - we were living at the smoking floor, and it often smellt cigarettes there.

Room Tip: It would definitely be better to ask for a non-smoking room... if they have it.

Stayed here a couple of nights, 3/14 & 3/15. Got upgraded to the next level of rooms, facing The Forbidden City! Quite an amazing view from the room. The hotel is right around the corner of Wanfujing Street, and the Wanfujing metro station (lines 1 & 5). It's also within a 5 minute walk to The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square.

The concierge was very friendly, providing directions to many places, and recommended several bars/clubs to go for drinks and a great vegetarian restaurant.

I'll definitely stay here again, even for longer periods of time.
