Stayed for 3 nights in July , in the middle of nowhere ,over priced , run down and not geared up for Europeans. A small bottle of water is £10 in the bar , tap water undrinkable . Avoid at all cost.

Room Tip: Complain and they upgrade

I stayed at the Shangri-La in the beginning of October 2010 for 3 days. We also had two events at the hotel and I also had few business meetings at Cafe Cha, Shang Palace and Cloud 9. The service staff at the restaurants and the banquet staff who helped us with our metings were excellent. The rooms were good and I had a room at the back overlooking the green backyard. Overall a nice experience, made special by the staff.

Room Tip: Select the rooms at the back with a view over the garden at the back

The lobby is STUNNING, the staff absolutely great, the overall quality is simply top notch! Insist on getting access to the horizon lounge as the evening cocktails there are sumptuous, the breakfast is also great (choice of eggs any way you want them, pancakes, waffles all very well presented, tasty and promptly delivered).
If you leave clothes unfolded in your room, they will be neatly folded when you return! WOW!
The nearest subway station is a 15-20 minute walk away and in Beijing, you MUST at the very least experience the subway and you should probably only use the subway instead of taxis and the headaches associated with traffic!
Bottom line, when in Beijing, let all your senses enjoy everything the Shangri-la has to offer!

Room Tip: Get the horizon level!!

Service is excellent. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
Room is average; TV looked terrible, hair dryer was in the room office desk. Had to request special extension to plug in my 120v laptop.
Need a taxi for anything. May have to wait 20 minutes for the taxi.
Food and spa are outstanding but quite expensive.

First of all, I love Shangri-La hotels and I booked this hotel almost blindly when we decided to travel to Beijing.

The hotel location is inconvenient and is walking distance to basically: nothing! Guess that a hotel like the Hilton would be a better bet when it comes to location.

Nevertheless, the room is fine, the amenities complete. Our reception was warm. The staff was waiting for us outside the hotel, had toys for the kids and we were check-in in our room. No queues, which is what you want after a long flight.
Extra beds for the kids were in the room, welcome cakes, everything!

The breakfast buffet is good and complete and continuously replenished. The staff is somewhat inefficient though. Requests often need to be made twice. But they are friendly.

Housekeeping and staff are very responsive to requests (other than at the breakfast).

Room service is expensive compared to what good restaurants charge outside. 140 RMB for a sandwich (25 US$) is a little crazy.

If I come back to Beijing I would take another hotel for tourism purposes, only because of its location. For any other purpose: this is a very good hotel.
