“High end, attentive staff, expensive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 February 2011

The hotel staff are very attentive and have good English skills. There is a small gift shop which seems to be unusual at high-end hotels in China (at least in my limited experience). This is a Shangri-La property.

My room was comfortable and was an interesting shape--curved somewhat. I never heard other guests during my stay. Wired but not wireless internet available in the room.

The restaurants have great food but are very expensive (including the buffet). The breakfast buffet was included in my room rate (but I didn't realize that until I checked out) and was wonderful.

The workout facilities are very nice and include an indoor pool. The pool room is not heated very much (my arm was notably cold every time I took a stroke--I even switched to breast stroke so more of my body was underwater) and swim caps are required (available there if you don't have one).

The spa is what one would expect at a 5-star hotel. They were able to accommodate my colleague and I on about an hour's notice. They are open very late which was nice for an after-dinner massage on our arrival day.

I returned here after a long absence and was not happy about the accommodations and probably will not return given that Beijing now has so many new competing hotels.

Room
Stayed in a Premier(?) room. Layout was spacious and still had a comforable feeling although furnishings were definitely old. Bathroom was also old but still clean. DVD player in the room is always welcomed. My only real complaint was the headboard on my bed (which is made of a cloth-like material); this cloth had stains from what looked to be a previous guest's hair grease/conditioner(?). Given that the hotel was fully-booked (which prevented a room change), I had to sleep here one night and then checked out the next day.

Common areas
Cannot complain about the restaurants or lobby bar; especially appreciated is the escalator access to the China World shopping mall.

Service
Unfortunately, this hotel seems to be targeting large corporate groups/conventions; the hotel was absolutely booked and you could feel the people everywhere (waiting line at check-in, lobby bar always full, first floor buffet restaurant full). Accordingly, staff seemed to go through the motions most of the time; no warm greetings rather perfunctory service throughout the hotel.

Price
Simply put: about the same price as everywhere else (save the Park Hyatt which charges more on average).

Bottome Line
There are far too many alternative hotels in this price range (Westin, Hilton, St Regis, Sofitel, Millenium, etc..) so it makes little sense to sacrifice comfort by staying here; especially given that Beijing's subway system works very well, the number 1 and 10 lines connect all of the hotels I have mentioned.

Yes this is probably one of the older 5 star hotel in Beijing - however it seems to have been refreshed and it is still competitive. Their standard rooms are large and spacious especially their bathroom with a separate shower and bathtub. The beds are very comfortable and you can get a great night sleep. The lobby area is impressive in terms of its space and it is very typical of the Shangri La theme. The service is excellent and the English of the staff are excellent vs other newer 5 star hotels that I have also stayed in. Where the hotel is showing its age is that there is no wifi connection in the rooms unless you upgrade to their Horizon club rooms on the 18th floor. Although they do have in room broadband it can be frustrating without wifi. The other let down in this hotel is its food. I was unimpress by their breakfast which i had for 4 days and it was the same each day and it tasted very bland. The only change was i think on the third day the move the position of where they place things to give an impression of change. However overall I like the rooms, its service and its location is quite central although you are not within walking distant of Tianamen Square - however the Silk Market is definitely walking distance,

When was my last time stay with China World Hotel? Probably 10 years ago. It's getting old and its facilities in my room are far too older than even local 4 star hotels. Not mention iphone dock, audio system, etc. Well, with its us$300 price, definitely I'll switch to either Fairmont or St. Regis at the same area.

Located in the HUGE central business district in Beijing, this fabulous 5.5 star hotel is everything that you would expect from a hotel in the Shangri La group. Despite it being a very big hotel, you are very much made to feel like their most important guest. Rooms are brilliantly appointed, large & comfortable with a opulent bath room. Food in the various resteraunts was first class and their staff cannot do lore to assist you. Only downside is the location, you do seem to be away from the attractions, but their again it depends on what you are in Beijing for.

This hotel is not much to look at from the outside, but is very nice inside. It has a nice lobby and lounge area, but I would certainly agree with the review that the rooms are small. They are not too small but I would expect more in this category. The rooms are nice however and very well kept. Overall I would say it was the service that brought down this hotel. There are tons of people working here but the English level is extremely low for a 5 star hotel and it was hard to really get any help for much of anything. They have one expensive tour line they they promote and otherwise offer you no additional information or alternatives. They are eager to help but don't have the language abilities or training. I'm not sure if it's cultural or just lack of training but it seemed they just had a memorized response for everything and would not engage you in a conversation to help you find what you were looking for. One day I wasn't feeling well and had the do not disturb sign on my door and they knocked on the door 3 times within an hour and called the room twice to see if they could service the room. The first time they knocked I simply didn't answer assuming the do not disturb light would speak for itself. They proceeded to let themself in the room. So in the effort to provide good service it just got plain annoying, clearing your half eaten plate from your table when you got up to go back to the buffet for some more juice, asking for your order several times right when you sit down for dinner without a chance to look at the menu. In this grand hotel lobby with live piano music, there slept a man on the sofa for at least 4 hours, they staff saw him and simply fluffed the pillows around him. The hotel and country are full of ironies and we just felt that China has just not caught up to "five star" standards yet. The breakfast at the hotel was fantastic but all other meals were mediocre to poor as well as expensive. This hotel is located in an expensive shopping district; expensive meaning gucci, armani, louie vouttain, omega, etc and you c an not find anything reasonably priced in the area. In general the experience was okay. Next time I would save the money and stay somewhere more convenient and less expensive as I don't think there a big gap in service between this and a lesser rated hotel. One more note: even though it's on a busy street it is surprising quiet in the rooms.

The China World Hotel is a calm oasis in the chaotic world of Beijing. The rooms were lovely, the lobby elegant, the restaurant superb. The food in China can be unpredictable, but the food in this hotel(as well as the other Shangri La Hotels in Xi'an and Shanghi) was awesome). The service was perfect and it was a lovely experience. It is located adjacent to a business center and first class Western shopping although a fabulous local market is within walking distance. Otherwise, taxis or other public transportation were needed to see the sites. .
