“Only for access to Beijing Int'l Convention Centre...not much else around”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014

Stayed for 3 days for a meeting at the Beijing Int'l Convention Centre. The hotel is immediately next to the convention centre, with a connecting passageway (with a few flights of stairs) leading to level 2 of the convention centre. This is prob useful in winter without having to go outdoors.

The hotel is a very basic setup and has a stark washed-out exterior appearance. Lobby and breakfast room was done up okay, although the quality of the breakfast was below par. The peas and corn in the fried rice was still hard (probably not thawed completely) and the eggs could only be done 1 way - fried.

The room was also basic although all the necessities were there (safe, kettle, adequate cupboard space, hairdryer). No instant coffee though, only tea was provided. There was even a gas mask for use in emergency in the cupboard! Room size was a little small although they did manage to squeeze in a small writing table. No gym or swimming pool in the hotel also.

The bathroom was really small. Only enough space for 1 person to stand, and even then it would be in the path of the door when opening or closing it. If you stand in the middle, the door, sink, WC and bathtub are on the 4 sides around you.

As another reviewer mentioned, the west side faces the car park and an open area, which is more pleasant than the expressway on the east side. However, there are floodlights in the car park (see picture) which are switched on at night to illuminate the side of the hotel. But this also means that unless you pull the thick blackout curtains, the light is bright enough to shine into the room.

The closest subway station was about 1 km away, which means you are dependent on taxis to get in and out of the hotel.

Other than the Olympic stadium (Bird's nest) about 20 min walk away, there is nothing within walking distance of the hotel. There looked to be a shopping centre around the bend of the road 5 min away, but only the basement was open with a sad-looking food court, even sadder supermarket (only alternate ceiling lights were switched on, making it look dim - every other supermarket has bright lights to attract attention), a Starbucks, and a few small shops.

Overall, unless you are coming to the convention centre or the Olympic stadium, don't bother.

I stayed here 2 nights for a meeting in the adjacent conference centre. Hotel is OK, what is nice is the Olympic stadium (birth nest) at some 500 meters from the hotel. There are apparently several breakfast rooms. The first morning, I took it in the big room at the first floor, and this was not pleasant seating (big round tables for 10 persons). The 2nd day, I had breakfast at the ground floor which is a much nicer restaurant

This hotel is located close to the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics site which is now dominated by closed stadiums, etc and the surrounding area has a lot of now mostly closed stores and nearly closed shopping centres. Even the nearby Walmart is mostly closed. Result - not much to see or do in the neighborhood of this hotel which is far from the city centre. There seem to be two types of rooms in this 10 story hotel - crowded single-bed rooms with poor furniture and small windows, and more roomy double-bed rooms, also with small windows (not that there's much to see outside anyway). The east side of the thin hotel building borders on a busy, noisy expressway, the west side is much better as it faces the closed Olympics site. The hotel has no recreational facilities, only 2 dining rooms and some meeting rooms upstairs. On the good side, the breakfast buffet is OK and the main dining room is also OK for dinner (all Chinese - no western food). The staff are very pleasant and helpful. In summary - stay somewhere else if you can. If you do have to stay here, try to get an upper level, 2 bed room on the west side.

Room Tip: Upper level double bed rooms on the West side are best.

Stayed 6 nights at the North Star Continental as part of a business trip. The title of this review basically tells it all. The Hotel is part of the Olympic village area, so that means the outskirts, in a rather uncanny neighbourhood - otherwise nothing to be concerned about. There is a feeling of what could be dubbed as Asian kitsch in this hotel, not uncommon from Singapore to Japan. Yet, it also means clean and not worn out furbishing, and really spacious rooms (the suites are huge for just $200 equivalent). Service is professional throughout, with good standards of English. Misunderstandings can happen, for instance about pre-payment, but they are resolved behind the scenes despite apparent inflexibility. Rooms are made-up very swiftly and efficiently as you leave them in the morning. Interesting and varied breakfast.
There is a shopping mall nearby where you will find local restaurants and within walking distance there is the Olympic village which has various attractions including a surreal bear garden where you will be able to sample beer with scorpions or tarantulas skewers.

Great location for conference goers. Right next to the convention center. Walking distance to the Olympic park. A little longer walk to the subway station so if you have big luggage, not a good idea to walk there. Price is in the middle among the hotels nearby.

Nice room and good service. Restaurant food is ok but very expensive. Buffet type food is nice. All in all, a great place for business purposes.

No free internet in room but charge is low.

The hotel is at the next door to the more expensive Beichen Crown Plaza hotel, and close to the Olympic stadium. The only thing I don't like is the smell of cigerattes in elevators and in the lobby. One evening, I kept smelling cigeratte smoke in my room (possibly from the air vent or cracks in the wall). I had to open the windows.

Room Tip: You can get free wifi if you sit at the tables close to the door in the breakfast restaurant. The b...

I stayed in this hotel two nights, attending a conference, like I think must of clients it was good hotel, very good breakfast. The hotel is Isolated from the city and the price could not be justified. The reception speak only English with difficulty, this complicate the communication with them.
