“Right location but poor experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

The location of this hotel is excellent - particularly for my business reasons - as it is close to the fragrant gardens which are lovely. From the lobby the hotel is impressive - but that is where the suppoused 5 star quality ends.

As most people have said the level of English at reception is limited - but then my Mandarin is equaly poor. But for an international hotel I found the level of language to be inadequate.

The room itself was OK - comfortable and clean, but mainly a standard room - nothing special. The WiFi was non-existant. I was able to connect to the WiFi with a strong signal - but totally unable to register to the web service despite being given very clear instructions. Three days without web and email (it would be OK if I wasn't expecting an email with a file I needed for work).

Breakfast was OK with a buffet plus the chef would prepare any tyope of eggs you wanted.

Unless you need to stay at Fragrant Hills I would look around for other hotels.

Stayed here for 4 nights while attending a workshop at the same hotel. The room I stayed in was fairly large and well equipped with most amenities. Had some problem during check in due to language problems as the staff at the reception don't or speak very little English, reception wanted RMB3,000 as deposit but a phone call to my local contact solved the problem. In China, you have to tell them if you are using a credit card when they ask you for the pin number as most of the service staff everywhere cannot differentiate between a credit with a debit card.
Rooms are equipped with a computer and wired broadband, strange but is true, is you use the computer with broad band, it is RMB40 per day but if you just plug in the broad band cable into your own laptop and use your own laptop to access then it is free but the speed is extremely slow.
Daily breakfast was reasonably ok, with quite a lot of local delicacies but if you are not keen of local delicacies, the eggs and bacon (cooked on order), toasts and cereals would be sufficient. Try the Beijing yogurt drink, you will love it and people drink it everywhere.
Lunch was also part of the meeting package, again it was mostly local delicacies, be adventurous and you will be ok. Surprise! you can even help yourself to unlimited soft drinks and beer from the fridge. The swimming pool located near the meeting rooms looks inviting but unfortunately do not have the time to try it.
Setbacks:-
• People tends to smoke outside the meeting rooms and this can unbearable and smells. Smoking seems to be everywhere in China.
• The public toilets even in hotel are a bit terrible, people tends not to flush and since it is the squatting type you can imagine what I meant?
• The hotel is located way off the city and unless you are attending a meeting or conference at the same hotel, this hotel is not a good choice if you are vacation as not many taxi drivers know its location. If you are coming late after a night out in the city, be prepared for the worse as not many taxi would want to go there since they will be returning empty to the city. Moreover if you don't speak the language you might want to think again about a taxi back in the night as you will have go through quite a long stretch that is in total darkness.
Good Points:-
• Due to its location, it is very quiet and peaceful and would be good place for a total relaxation.
• Nearby attractions include the Beijing Botanical Garden and Fragrant Hill park.
• A number of good local restaurants within walking distance, even a MacDonalds is within walking distance.
• If you are adventurous, bus service to the city is located nearby and riding on the local buses is an experience by itself.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the court yard. The afternoon sun can be unbearable

The lobby was huge and elegant as seen in many Chinese hotels.

Our room was very satisfactory, but perhaps we didn't get (or pay for) one of their 4 star rooms. The TV was old style, the hallway carpet had some kind of covering. The bathroom had water damage to the ceiling and the soap holders in the tub/shower were missing the front part so they didn't hold soap.

The room was a good size with a nice sitting area and table with a view out onto a pretty garden. The hotel is very convenient for hikes in this beautiful area.

I have been here in occasion of a scientific congress. The hotel is wonderful, in a beautiful location, quite easy to reach by public transportation or taxi (if you are able to catch one in Beijing :=)). Cleaning is very good and rooms are wide. The hotel staff is very very gentle. The only problems with this hotel is that just a few persons of the staff speak an acceptable English, and I think that this is a very important aspect for a 5 stars hotel, hosting international congresses

Did a quick day trip from Beijing, took an hour by car from down town due to traffic but worth it.

In Autumn with the leaves turning this would be a spectacular place, but at any time of year it is a beautiful place to walk around.

Quite a few historic buildings including an old residence of Chairman Mao's, there is some real history to be seen and learned.

There is a cable car / chair lift to take you to the top of the mountain (500+ metres) but walking up is a good way to go, you can see all the sites to make it a little easier, then cable car down.

Worth the travelling time.

Stayed here for 2 nights last week. First of all, the pictures on the internet do not even look close to the kind of room I was in. Even the furniture is totally different. My room had filthy carpets and the bathroom smelled like a wet dog. The beds were rock hard and small. Everything was outdated including the TV. On the last day, as I was packing, ants kept coming out of my suitcase and I was SO annoyed. Not only that, the staff doesn't speak english. They claim to understand "a little" but they don't. Maybe something really simple, like, "CHECK-OUT". Also, the AC was the worst. It made the room so muggy and everything felt damp. The lobby isn't even cool. It's hot everywhere. The buffet has NO western food except for toast and watermelon. Everything else is Chinese food....and I've had Chinese food before but this buffet doesn't even make it look appetizing.
After a long flight, this was not what I was expecting. Thank goodness we moved hotels.

My wife and were disappointed in Fragrant Hill Hotel. We traveled there to celebrate our anniversary, only to find that every arrangement offered on the hotel's own website had to be renegotiated when we arrived at check-in, including: price of the room, size and number of beds, and even the view we requested when our booking was accepted. The hotel is showing signs of aging and the service reminded us of the old Maoist days when workers didn't really expect to work to get paid. There was no drinking water provided beyond boiled tap water (safe, but tastes like rusty pipes). We hope to never return to Fragrant Hill Hotel.
