Owner description: Once a summer retreat for emperors, this 290-acre park is still a retreat for the crowd-weary tourist, who can relax here or stroll around ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and huge lake, stopping occasionally at a shop or tea-house.

We only spent about two hours here because our group had someone on crutches and it is not necessarily an easily accessible attraction for that type of problem. The grounds and views are breathtaking. We took the subway out and it was easy to access from the stop. There aren't a lot of signs, however pointing to the entrance. Well worth it though.

This is a green peaceful park with a large lake. It is a glimpse into how the Chinese royalty relaxed. It is grand. Lots of walking and steps, but there is shade. Near public transportation, about a 3 minute walk. Crowds were light. Sunny and mid 90's. Easy access to cold drinks and food. Bathrooms are clearly marked, but carry a roll of toilet paper with you everywhere in China. Beautiful paintings and artifacts. Can rent a paddleboat or a small motor boat for an hour, but must leave a 400 rmb deposit which is refunded. Stark contrast to the Forbidden City.

This is such a great place to visit on a hot day. The temperature was soaring but a wonderful breeze blew along the waterway. Be sure to take one of the boats across the water for a full view of the sight.

The lovely Summer Palace along the man-made lake was a great way to spend time in Beijing during our China Spree tour. Here we made our way into the front gate, walked through the grounds along the lake's promenade, through the summer palace under the large hill top temple, through the walkway with 3000 paintings depicting stories of the time, until we ended our walk at the Marble Boat only to take our own short ride in a dragon boat across the lake back to the entrance. Our tour director told us about the empress, her cunning and murderous schemes to control China during a time when women were not allowed to have any political or governmental positions. If you visit the Summer Palace either come armed with a good guidebook or with a tour so you don't miss any of the background stories.

We visited on a very hot day (close to 40 degrees!) but were propelled on despite the heat to catch every-increasingly beautiful views across the site. This place IS enormous though and give yourself a full day to enjoy the parks, temples, etc. Take the boat back to save time!
