“Must stay hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

This is a really lovely small hotel in the heart of Beijing. There are only 9 rooms but as soon as you walk through the door from the lane it is so quiet and relaxing. The staff are very helpful and can recommend places to eat nearby. The rooms are spacious and clean. The breakfast is good and there is always nice background music. A great find.

I stayed only one night, but I found it amazing.

First, it's absolutely beautiful. I loved the design of the room.

The location is also very convenient for visits (near the forbidden city). It's in one of those narrow streets, but next to a main street with small shops and restaurants. It was very quiet.

The staff was pleasant and helpful.

Internet worked well.

Breakfast in the morning was very enjoyable. Good cappuccino.

It's a tiny place that is a very welcome change from huge impersonal hotels in this city.

The experience was highlighted by the young friendly and most helpful staff, the serene atmosphere, and the amenities the hotel provided, the breakfasts -- and the COLD beers. I would recommend that the hotel provide a top sheet for western guests that are not used to sleeping with just the heavy blanket on the bed -- especially in the summers. Additionally, it would be great if guests had the choice of not washing their towels everyday to conserve resources. Other than that the hutong experience was well worth it to discover the charm of real historic community life in Beijing -- unlike other hotel developments nearby in other hutongs that build multi-level hotels that are totally out of character with the scale of the neighborhood. There are many other hotels in the area that are gentrifying the neighborhood and pushing residents out, so at least with the smaller scale of this hotel one feels not as bad about staying here.

I share other comments made by others in that the smaller scale of the hotel allows guests to get to know staff and other guests. I did not find the rooms to be that small, especially when one considers that one can hang out elsewhere w/n the common areas of the hotel and chill. Would definitely stay here again next time.

We had been in Beijing twice before, and always stayed at a big hotel. What a mistake! Rooms not very large, but big enough, sober but nice furniture, spotless, great service. Couldn't find the massage they recommended? The brought me to it, no issue. Would be back after bar closing time but still fancied a beer? No problem: a cold Erdinger in an ice cooler was awaiting me in the room. Bikes are for rent, great experience. Sit on the roof terrace, have a chat with the other guests (so much easier to socialise in a small hotel), enjoy the evening.
Some bathrooms need some minor overhaul, but they're working on it.

We stayed for three nights at the Hulu Hotel. It is a in a traditional Hutong, but with all the amenities.
Outside traditional, inside purist modern. The rooms are small but very well equipped with everything you need. The beds and cushions are wonderful. For China, the hotel is incredibly quiet. You only hear some voices and even sparrows in the morning. 2 very nice restaurants nearby, the staff gives you their address. Oh and by the way it is the staff that makes all the difference. They are amazing, very helpful, friendly and caring and have loads of tips if you have questions, most speak excellent english.
The location is great, near two different Metro stations, and a mere 25 minutes walk to the forbidden city. Would love to return one day.

We visited Beijing with family. This hutong hotel is at the heart of the city, close to attractions, shopping and restaurants. We used the subway to travel around, walked and caught a motorised bicycle fitting 4 of us. (Beware - taxis are hard to find in Beijing). We took advantage of the airport transfer organised by the hotel which proved to be hassle free and reasonably priced. It was a delight to stay in this authentic hutong which had comfortable rooms with large bathrooms, sitting areas (we booked late so had to take the more expensive bigger rooms - still a reasonable price), efficient wifi, excellent breakfasts and a delightful roof terrace. We sat up there on our first night in the stillness and peace amongst this bustling city and relaxed and lost track of time - fantastic. Home made yoghurt was a delight. The hotel also organised a trip to the a Great Wall. Finally, staff were friendly, competent and efficient. Highly recommend this accommodation.

If you want to stay in a hutong hotel in downtown Beijing, this is it! Found in a historic hutong alley this little hotel is fantastic! The location of the hotel is great! Not far from the metro and fairly close to the Forbidden City. If arriving by train, beware the cab drivers will take you on a very long ride and charge you almost double what the fare should have been. Either use a map to show that you know exactly where the hotel is and how far away it is, before you leave the station or better yet-use the metro!!

The staff at the Hulu were very helpful and genuinely nice. They were willing to make phone calls for us and helped us get taxis to the airport. They even let my two kids feed the fish every morning when we came to breakfast. Breakfast was very tasty and filled us up before sightseeing. There is also laundry service at the hotel which was fast and reasonably priced.

The rooms were very clean and spacious, but be aware if you go in June you will be sleeping with some mosquitos. This is a hutong hotel with courtyard and there are mosquitos that sneak in every time you open the door. Besides for the few mosquitos, sleeping was good, the hotel is located on a very quiet street. The beds were spacious and comfy. The bathrooms were very nice as well with a rain-type overhead showerhead and a hand-held spray nozzle that help a lot with bathing the kids.

This place is really authentic and wonderful! I would highly recommend it!

Room Tip: If traveling with two children you will probably need two rooms, ask for the rooms to be next to eac...
