“Old and no service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2011

The hotel is pretty old. Staff are not very helpful. The room is small and old. Nobody at the door so I have to walk to the street to get taxi even with my luggage. The bed is very hard. Not recommended.

This hotel is very good, with only one flaw. It is quite far from all major turist locations (arround 30 min drive with a taxi, which is very hard to find). The subway is quite far as well.

My family and I stayed here for four nights and we found this hotel just fine. The rooms were clean and comfortable with some of the softer beds in China (We slept on some hard ones). The location is not great but it was quiet and had a few restaurants near by. The breakfast buffet was quite good but expensive. The best parts of staying at this hotel was "Storm" who is the concierge. He was terrific at telling us how to use local transportation which is easier than trying to get a taxi. Taxis are dreadful in Beijing!! He booked all of our internal air travel and a wonderful tour of the great wall. It was the best tour we took! We first went to a restored section of the wall with great views and very few people. Then we had lunch in a village (one of our top 5 meals) and hiked through a walnut grove to a second section of the wall. A lady guided us and we ate fresh walnuts and had plums from a farmer's garden. Such a wonderful experience and a terrific memory. Storm also arranged a driver on our return to Beijing which worked out perfectly. So overall, the hotel was comfortable (a bit dated in areas) with excellent services at a good price.

We spent 3 nights in this hotel. Like my previous visit in 2009, the service was consistent and reliable. Because our room wasn't ready when we checked in, we were upgraded to a suite. After one night, though, due to an unpleasant smell in the suite, we moved back to an executive room(though not the one we had requested). The breakfast buffet was very good and aside from the smell in the suite, the rooms were clean and comfortable; and, Storm was helpful, as always.

I stayed at this hotel at the start of an organised tour with Travel China Guide (excellent, see separate review).

The room was like a freezer! However, I slept fitfully with an extra blanket and a hot water bottle. The bed was comfortable, with quality sheets and pillows (menu choice), and there was no noise.

There was a vast array of quality Asian and Western offerings for breakfast, and free wifi in the lobby, however the signal was not strong and often dropped out.

I approached the concierge desk to get a map and ask directions to a supermarket to buy water, as the hotel only supplied 2 small bottles/day. The lovely young man on duty didn’t have a clue what I wanted, as English was not a strong point. Fortuitously, a couple walked up at that moment, said they had found a nearby supermarket and provided directions. The Hua Qiang supermarket was about 4 blocks down the road, well signposted, and with a much larger selection on the 1st floor.

The hotel is in a nice suburb, with lots of tree-lined streets, so walking in bright sunshine on a hot day was fine – beneath the shade of the trees.

I had lunch at the hotel’s Salt and Pepper restaurant – char kway teow – fried rice noodle with bean sprouts (10 of them) and green vegetable (half a stalk), without the prawns, squid and fish cake (I’m allergic) – but at the same price – 68 RMB ($10). It was very modest.

The hotel was excellent as I was on an organised tour, but if I was travelling independently, I would stay closer to a metro station. While taxis are plentiful and cheap, the roads are choked with traffic, so the metro affords the quickest means of getting around.

The 4 star are more of a 3 star in reality.

The staff is kind and the restaurants are ok. The rooms are ok, although a bit smelly. Transforming a non-smoking room into a smoking room by simply adding an ashtray is a bit weird for me.

The internet service is ok, but requires additional charge - something I had to find out on checkin. Free WiFi works in the restaurant area, but is quite slow.

I assume by Beijing standards there isn't much to complain about, but the hotel has seen better times and is a good distance from the main attractions in the city. Other than that the service was decent and staff were responsive. While the buffet breakfast and diner were both good avoid ordering any thing form the menu of the hotel cafe.
