1.5 hours away from city center and took on a tour with an amazing guide found here on Tripadvisor, Jessie.

Well worth the time and not overly touristy if you get here before 11.

Done it at last. Wished I had had the courage to stop our driver for breakfast at the school house but ended up with a Subway instead (hmmm) got tricked in to going up ski lift instead of cable car at ticket booth but didn't matter as there was more than enou wall to walk by getting from ski lift to western end (really steep! I am relatively fit 43 yr old can swim 1proper mile in 35 mins and run 5k in 25 mins but that wall in that heat pushed me to some limits . Loved it.) did get to school house for coffee in the end which was a lovely wind down and far preferable to the LCDenominator tourist pap around the car parks.

Completely amaze with Mutianyu- one of 7 wonders of the world. If you come during summer, please come very early in the morning to avoid a long que especially if you opt tour bus as your main transport. Otherwise please get a private tour car that can bring you up to cable car entrance. Cable car can bring you up to Mutianyu entrance. In summer long que always at cable car area and Mutianyu. Whatever challenges me and hubby went the through...it was worth it :)

It's a 90 minute ride out of Beijing, but definitely worth it. On a weekday the crowds are very limited - a few people here or there and occasionally you have stretches of wall all to yourself. We took the tram up and then walked down which made things easier on the kids.

If you do only one thing in China is hiking the Great Wall. Its amazing to see how many Chinese are there and how amazed they are to see you there.
