We spent about 2 hours visiting this majestic site. Not to be missed. Lots of stamina necessary to do it justice.

“Rugged and the best of four sections I have seen”
Reviewed 7 September 2012

This section is a great walk, and the wall is in proces of renovation. Locals are being paid 9 RMBto return blocks fromo the 600 year old section to help. The walk starts with a modest climb and then lengthens to uphill peaks in the clouds. Itisnotsuitable for children but couples and mature teens would love the challenge and rugged sections to climb. My group took as hot cut back halfway (due to a time shortage), we cut back along a rugged horse trail after 4k, however, if one gets to the end of the 7k stretch I was told taxi.s are available to run you back to the start as the final section is closed and under repair. Few tourists, awesome climb a drugged conditions make this the best section I have seen to date for someone who wants to see the real wall.

“Awesome despite the foul weather”
Reviewed 2 September 2012

As expected, just a stunning thing to see. A 2 hour drive from Beijing, but by being further out, it meant it was pretty quiet. We got there early and saw no one else for quite some time. Cannot compare to other parts of the wall, but what a wonderful thing to finally see.

“The real thing”
Reviewed 2 September 2012

If you've always dreamed of going to Beijing and climbing the Great Wall, this is the place to do it. A bit further out than the higher traffic sections of the wall, Jinshanling is more than worth the hour and a half to two hour drive outside of Beijing. (Besides, what's another hour if you've already flown 10-14 hours to get there?!) Most tourists head to Badaling, as I did when I first visited. This was followed by a hike up the wall at Mutianyu a year later. Both of these sections have been heavily reconstructed and neither compare to the authentic crumbling beauty of the Great Wall at Jinshanling. During my hike on a Saturday afternoon in early March 2012, there were hardly any other tourists on the wall. At Badaling, I was the first or second person in line and after about 15 minutes on the wall, the hikers behind me could hardly move because the crowds were so packed.

As some other reviewers have already noted, be prepared to be followed by locals who, in broken English, will seek to be your "guide" for the day and begin trailing you from the moment you begin your climb up the wall. My friend and I each ended up buying a t-shirt to get them to quit following us, which probably cost about $6 or $7 each.

Overall, though, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Jinshanling as the portion of the wall to visit. It is well worth the extra distance from Beijing and an experience you won't forget.
