In the Hutongs this authentic hostel was a great find. Incredibly we'll positioned, close to most Beijing sites, close to the metro, close to great eating places. Comfortable, clean, a warm homely atmosphere. Although a supposedly a backpackers, it is more like a small hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

I just can't say enough good things about this family run place. From the start, they were kind, welcoming, helpful and endlessly hospitable. Its also spotlessly clean, and the food is good. I will definitely be back.

We spent 2 nights at the hotel on the recommendation of our travel agent. It is miles from the hub of the city centre of Being life. If one arrives at night you have to walk down a dingy, dark street to get to the hotel. The beds are extremely hard to sleep on. The towels in the bathroom were torn and threadbare. Dirt on the carpet was never removed during our stay in this hotel.

I have now visited Beijing three times since summer 2013, every time staying at the Red Lantern.

There are two properties, this review is about the main building in the Hutongs.

It's well located, mid way between three underground stations, lines 2 & 4, so pretty central. Buses are frequent too.

The hostel is on two levels with rooms opening out onto a central courtyard where in the evenings people sit out (it's actually inside still), chat, eat (they serve food too), drink cold beer and with free wifi, catch up on emails and the like. There is always a really good, wide diversity of travellers, ages, reasons for being in Beijing, far more than you typically get in any traditional backpackers' hostels I've ever witnessed.

In the winter you get a portable heater in your room which is fine.

The staff are all friendly, half speak good levels of English, you can arrange tours from the hostel too. They take on-line bookings and I would recommend you do book ahead as it's a popular place.

Food outlets, both street stalls and little restaurants are a-plenty, maybe 10 within 200m of the front door.

Dorm beds (£9 a night) are a good size, as are the private / family rooms.

Clean & tidy, hot showers, a laundry service… what's not to like?

Room Tip: Book ahead on-line or on email.

We stayed here for 4 nights and really loved this place. It was a bit of a mission to find the place from the metro station as they have incorrect directions listed on their website but we called them and they guided us in as we were only a few minutes away.
It is located a few hundred metres down a quiet hutong and is about a 10 minute walk from Ping'anli station on line 4 and very easy to get around from there and only costs 2 yuan to any stop on the Beijing Metro system.
The rooms were located in a courtyard, small but cosy and clean. The staff were great and could speak English, so a bonus! There are some fantastic hutongs close to the building, so a good area to explore and lots close by.
They have a really good local/western food menu, good portions and good value prices, so saves you looking around for a place to eat!

We stayed here 4 nights and were happy with everything this place had to offer. We did have trouble finding this place from the train station but once we did, we were impressed! It's in a great location near shops and restaurants and a few blocks down is a touristy hutong which is well worth the visit.

We loved the decor of the dining/common area, it felt very traditional. All the rooms are located around the common area which we thought would get noisy but everyone was fairly quiet in the evenings.

The food served here was fantastic and reasonably priced. And the staff were helpful, friendly and spoke English.

Our room was fairly small but it was cosy and comfortable. It came with air-conditioning, a duvet and blanket for when it's cold at night. The wifi was pretty good and the shared bathroom facilities were spacious and always kept clean.

It's definitely a great place to stay while in Beijing!

My travel agent (Explore Tibet) booked a room for me. I'm sure glad they did. Everything has gone smoothly from pick up at the airport (driver was there waiting for me on time) to allowing me to use the (free) internet facility between checking out & whilst I wait to set off on the next part of my tour.

Good location - well away from the main road (quiet), within 5 minutes walk to the subway station(s) and easy hitting distance of the main sights of Beijing.

Its a courtyard, which means security wise safe - the main door is permanently locked (you get your own pass key) ad the reception (facing the main door) is staffed between 7:00 am - 23:00.

Rooms are spotless (cleaned everyday) beds comfortable (hard mattress) & with plenty of hot water for a shower on demand.

Food is available between 7:00 - 11:00 & again from 17:00. The Chinese selection of evening meals cannot be faulted. Be aware you are provided with chop sticks (which are fairly easy to master) to eat with & dishes with chilli... the chilli takes no prisoners. On the naga scale of chilliness they are up there with the best of the eye wateringly hot.

Staff are faultless - really friendly, welcoming speak good english. What I especially liked was the honest appraisal you recieved when asking questions, no "hard sell" just an honest answer to how it is. Take note of what they tell you. I found it of great use.

Ideal for travellers wanting to avoid the standard (bland) hotel and the general noise /chaos of backpacker areas.

In terms of safety I would say that its highly recommended for families with children and (solo) women travellers.
