This is one of the more upscale state-owned enterprise hotels. Usually used for news conferences. As others have said, it is within walking distance of Wanfungjing and in the center of town. Close to Forbidden City too (maybe two subway stops?). Huge mall diagonally accross the street for food/shopping.

As this is a Chinese hotel, beds tend to be shorter and ceilings a little bit lower than usual. Otherwise, clean and stately.

Not much night life nearby. Wangfujing closes down around 11 and the government has been cutting down on nightlife in general for vice reasons.

The location is more than perfect : just next to Dongdan metro station, walking distance to Wanfujing Street, very safe surrounding area (financial avenue), lots of restaurants in the near malls. I booked for the « No window Economic Room ». The room is still a five star hotel room, even with the label « economic ». As planned, there was no window but they made the effort to create a fake day-light with curtains to make you feel that there is a window. The room and the bathroom are big. In the bathroom, bath and shower are separated. Only (very little) negative point : the shower head is fixed. Also we booked for a double bed room and had a twin beds room. We accepted it because each bed is big enough to welcome two sleepers and with the cheap price of the economic room, there is no complain to make. Recommended…

About Beijing : Beijing and Hong Kong are definitely the most civilized and safest cities of China. In Beijing, there are tons of tourist points that will blow up your eyes and the shopping possibilities are numerous and various. Plan minimum one full week there.

I stayed here in September 07 and was delighted with the choice.
It was still being renovated at this time but it didn't really affect us at all. Front desk were helpful and spoke english and were always on hand to write out locations on cards to give to the taxi drivers (this is v.important as taxi drivers generally won't be able to read the western alphabet on maps....why would they!?).
The room was spacious, as was the bathroom and there was plenty of closet space. This came in particularly handy after a couple of visits to the silk markets!
The bar was opened a few days after we arrived and it was decent enough. I can't comment on the restaurant or breakfast as we didn't try it while we were there.
The subway stop is right outside the hotel which is great, especially when the main shopping street is 2 stops away and Tiananmen/Forbidden City a further stop on. I found the taxis great once you got over the language barrier. They were cheap, friendly and didn't try to rip you off.
The one negative comment I'd have about the hotel is the gym and pool area. The "gym" consisted of one multipurpose machine. I couldn't even be bothered! The pool was fine but the changing areas were filthy. I only went down there once over ten days because of this.
Overall a really good hotel for the money we paid but the gym could do with a bit of work.

I was in Beijing for business and left the arrangements to my hosts in China. They booked me into the Beijing News Plaza and I was very pleased. My room was on the 15th floor and faced the front. A large comfortable bed, nice wood work and a great view through the arched window. High speed internet (included) via ethernet cable didn't work the first night, but it was fixed in the morning and worked great the rest of my stay. The bathroom was spacious and beautifully appointed with marble, a large soaking tub and separate glassed in shower. It took me a little while to understand the thermostat, but the heat was great and worked well whenever my roomkey was installed in the socket on the wall inside the door, which also controlled the lights' master circuit. One amusing detail was that the pulsating shower head in the shower had been immobilized, presumably by a chinese workman who installed it and assumed that the loose adjusting ring was not supposed to move, so had tightened it until it was locked into pulse mode.

Location is only about 10 blocks from Tianemen Square and the Forbidden City. The large and very western style Oriental Mall is two blocks away with many stores and excellent restaurants to chose from.

Staff spoke english reasonably well and they were anxious to be helpful with advice and extra efforts. The western style cafe on 23rd floor was reasonable but I opted for a room rate without breakfast included, so I only used it occassionally and never for the breakfast buffet. The coffee shop is on the first floor and the lobby bar is on two (top of the escalator) despite the fact that english language signage indicates the reverse.

The minibar was missing, but there were a small assortment of western liquors in minibottles arrayed on the shelf over where a mini fridge should be installed. Large Phillips TV with many cable stations, including at least 4 in english. Clean, and very classy would be my conclusions. An absolute bargain for a 4 or 5 star facility. I only paid about US$120 per night in RMB via Amex.

By the way...the sundries store on the ground floor was a bargain for real size liquor, bottled water, etc. The Sichuan style restaurant on the ground floor was excellent and a bargain.
