“Great if you speak Mandarin!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2014 via mobile

On arrival it learned hat the hotel had simply decided to arbitrarily cancel my reservation. No good reason. Compounded by the fact that the staff had no means of communicating with non-Mandarin speakers.
The hotel itself however is simply magnificent, the "SS Titanic" of its class. Hard to comment on the location because every part of Beijing looked identical, yet if they decide to be more cross-border, I would happily name this as the best hotel I've been at.

I have stayed in this hotel for several times and always had a very nice time. Good for business, the rooms are big enough and silent to work. Well located near the Russian market in Beijing, it´s also very close to the subway station to go toTianAnMen and other interesting culture sites in Beijing. Good International breakfast. The gym and swimmingpool are in a good enviorement, clean and good maintenance, ready to be use. Staff is alway nice and very helpful. The price is fair enough for all what you get.

We chose this hotel because it was near where we had business meetings. We also wanted to have an authentic Chinese experience instead of international brands. It was good for those purposes. However, the shortcomings were many. It dubs itself as a 5-star hotel, but rooms were shabby with cheap furniture and plumbing broke down a few times during my 5-night stay. It is a huge hotel, but there is no lobby to speak of. You had to stay at the bar if you wanted to stay downstairs. The food was substandard at the bar and room service. There are a couple of decent restaurants at the hotel, but their hours were not always convenient and we ended up eating at the lobby bar quite a few times. There is no executive lounge and the business center had limited capabilities. The staff were polite but communication was extremely difficult. Between smoking (which seemed to be allowed everywhere) and outside smog, the air in the hotel including the rooms was very polluted and stuffy.

In the main, english is not understood in china so I will not beat up a hotel on this point but it does make the customer experience very difficult to say the least.

Hotel is fine. Rooms are clean enough by chinese standards, fairly modern but a little dark.

I stayed over two visits due to business commitments in Ningbo but on the first night my room did have a smell of stale smoke. on my return visit later that week I requested a non-smoking room and it was much better. No smell of smoke at all.

Poor Wifi and only available in foyer/bar area.

Lobby bar is expensive and again looks a little dated.

Hotel is functional and I'm sure there are much worse around.

Breakfast is excellent and caters for all needs

Location is ok.

If I was returning to Beijing I would certainly investigate hotels arond the south end of Wangfujing but would happily stay in the Kuntai again

Room Tip: If your a non smoker, make sure you specifically ask for a non-smoking room upon check-in

Positives: Free internet (but no wifi in the room), comfortable room with decent size, shower with sufficient water pressure, reasonably clean, easy to get a taxi in the morning (this is very important in Beijing and is not necessarily true for all hotels here)... Price was reasonable in BJ standard... RMB850 including breakfast...
Negatives: Only two very small bottle water offered free in the room (normally u can get 4 to 5 bottles), not much choices for breakfast (but the noodle and egg ladies were very polite and prepared their food carefully... Well this is pretty rare for hotels in china... male chefs don't really care... normally attitude were bad)...

Overall experience was pretty good.

Its was a lovely hotel only difficulty is they don't know much English and its difficult to get along without a proper guide.
The breakfast is very good and the staff are attentive, the time for the breakfast could be extended as we missed it twice.

I stayed here for 7 nights on my first business trip to China and was glad I did.
The rooms are large and luxurious. The breakfast buffet is great with wonderful choices and service.
It took me some time to get to know the city, but the location is great, as it is a pleasant walk to the subway and a much shorter walk to lively shopping malls and restaurants .

The Internet access is weird in that you have to ask for a router to get wifi and it blocks you if you try to use more than one device.

I would stay here again for sure.
