Have stayed at the Raffles Beijing several times and never let down. The rooms are comfortable, well porportioned, good bathrooms, very reliable internet, good lounge and business center. It is close to government and many businesses, walking distance from Forbidden City, and there is a mall just across the street. Prices are on the high side, but if it fits your budget, you will not be let down.
If you decide to walk to Forbidden City and Tianemen Square, you WILL be solicited by friendly guides who "just want to practice my English." Firmly but kindly tell them no - it may take a couple of times. You do not need their help.

Room Tip: The rooms on the street side, the old wing tend to be bigger and better.

We really enjoyed our stay at Raffles. We booked a hotel transfer which I would highly recommend. You are welcomed as soon as you get off the plane and escorted through immigration and through a side door to a waiting car. We arrived at 2am after a delayed flight so avoiding the arrivals hall and taxi dramas was a major plus! We were warmly welcomed by the assistant manager Berndt who was just lovely. It made our late night arrival much more comfortable. The rooms are huge!!
We had a problem with our shower flooding and this was immediately fixed when we were out- nothing was a problem.
We stayed for two nights but didn't spend much time in the hotel except for a cocktail in the hotel lounge before dinner. The concierge team were very helpful with their restaurant recommendations (we went to Da Dong duck restaurant which we loved and is within walking distance if you like to walk!).
The breakfast was really good too.
All in all, the hotel was a great haven for busy tourists on a very cold Beijing weekend.

Arriving at the Raffles Hotel to find we had been upgraded to the wonderful Landmark Suite was the start of an unforgettable stay at this 5 star hotel. The room was like our own apartment, large and very comfortable with a guest wc, bath with jacuzzi, and the most beautiful bedroom and lounge area. The hotel surroundings were elegant and staff service second to none. The ambassador John was a mine of information and nothing was too much trouble. The location was perfect, we could walk to Tianamen Square and had the spectacular shops and centre 5 minutes in the other direction. Our first afternoon on return to the hotel we had scones for tea in the lounge area. Then we had the buffet meal in the restaurant our first night which offered a superb selection of different foods and was very enjoyable. Breakfast was a delight with fresh food to order including eggs benedict, my favourite and everything about this hotel for us was truly perfect. We visited quite a few hotels on our trip but this one stood out for us and was the most memorable. I would love to visit again one day!

Room Tip: If you can stretch to the Landmark Suite, it is a truly wonderful room to relax in, lovely decor, la...

The hotel is a historic hotel, built in the early 1900's in the Grand European style. The facade and lobby have that elegant feel of travel from a by-gone era. And the staff does an excellent job of living up to the standards set by the facilities.

Our room was beautiful. Subtle, relaxing decor. Plenty of room for resting, relaxing and planning. It was an oasis in the middle of frantic Beijing.

We were able to walk approximately 1 KM to the entrance to the Forbidden City - do not use the Google directions - they take you to a back gate. Instead, walk out the front entrance of the hotel and make a right. Keep walking past the Beijing Grand Hotel, past a park that will have benches in front, and cross the street. You have arrived at the main entrance to the Forbidden City - which is directly across from Tianamen Square. Time from entrance to entrance: 15 minutes.

If you want to shop in a modern Chinese mall, exit the hotel, make a left, walk past the Beijing Hotel, cross the street and you are at the Oriental Plaza.

You are looking for the back streets where there are mom and pop stores, make a left when you get to the Oriental Plaza and walk for 2 blocks, you are in the midst of inexpensive noodle shops, tea shops, etc.

Except for going to the Great Wall, we could walk to almost every place we wanted to see.

Loved this hotel!!!

The hotel is walking distance from Forbidden City, Tieneman Square, and the shopping street. Service is excellent, with the concierge greeting me by my name. I stayed in the Business, Inc. room, which is a suite with a living room and bedroom.

Pros: Large room, great service, good location, great breakfast, clean and modern.

Cons: Heating/air cond didn't work well in my room, breakfast super expensive (like $30 usd per person), gym could use more weight equipment, cabs do not like to take you to this hotel because of traffic on street.

Tip - if you are going to visit the great wall, do not do a tour group. The tour group will take you to jade factories and/or silk factories to earn a commission. Take a private cab to the wall. Yes, it is more expensive, but you will not waste half a day going to places you do not want to visit.

Beijing is a city that requires some work and patience. Staying at the Raffles is exactly the opposite. The staff were very helpful and extremely attentive. There was some construction going on behind the hotel (which was going on at night) and the hotel staff was very happy to move us to a different quieter room for our second night there. The tour desk set up a very nice tour of the great wall for us that required no advanced planning. The rooms are beautifully decorated and offer a pleasant respite from the gritty city. Oh yes and I must mention the breakfast. It is worth every penny- it is a decadent smorgasbord of eastern and western delights. I highly recommend a stay at the Raffles Beijing.
