This brand-new hotel really deserves a 5-star ranking - I have stayed at dozens of different hotels in Beijing over the years, but things have never been quite as perfect as in Sofu. The most exceptional aspect is the location - the hotel is located in the middle of 'hutongs', i.e. historic alleyways, and most importantly you are safe from the hassle and chaos of the most tourist districts (for many the main annoyance in China). The feel of the place is very local and genuine, there are dozens of small restaurants and street stands where the locals eat. Yet many attractions are within a walking distance - it makes a nice 30-45 min walk to Beihai park and Forbidden city from here. Restaurants and shops directed at Westerners are within a 10-min walk by the Houhai lake. Taxis are plenty outside, and access to 2 main subway lines is only a few minute walk away.
The hotel is professionally managed and the staff is clearly making every effort to accomodate the needs of the customers. My room was quite large, the beds super comfortable and, most important, it was very quiet...
For all, I would recommend printing out clear instructions to this hotel in Chinese for the taxi driver. Also, please make sure the keep the phone number available.More
