We stayed at the Beijing Sihe Courtyard Hotel as a family in June. We had booked the hotel after reading the great reviews online about the peace and quiet, as well as the friendly staff and the unique Hutong experience. The hotel did not disappoint.

However, if you're looking for a Westernized experience, this is NOT it. This hotel is best for the adventurous traveler who's looking to get away from the well-known "name brand" hotels. If you're looking for an authentic experience, t his is it!

Location: The hotel was close to the subway and many little shops that sold clothing, food, grocery items etc. However, it's not that easy to find; you need to walk a significant ways down an alley way that most taxis and cars can't or won't drive down. Don't be worried! Once you find it, you'll be glad you made the trek.

Food: The Sihe serves a continental-style breakfast each morning, which always included coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, pastries, assorted cereals, bread for toast, French toast, fruit and wonton soup. They had rotating foods as well, which included meatballs, noodles etc. They also will make you eggs to order. We loved this breakfast each morning. It was very convenient to be able to eat a nice breakfast at the hotel before heading out for the day.

Rooms: Very authentic Chinese. The bathrooms have been upgraded, and feature nice sinks and showers. The beds (most of them four-poster) have silk bedding with Chinese embroidery. The flat pillows and hard mattresses made us nervous at first, but we surprisingly slept great. The rooms also featured desks and chairs (which weren't that comfortable), as well as mini-refrigerators and a TV. The decor, bedding, lighting, furniture etc. were all very authentic Chinese. A great experience, if that's what you're looking for.

Common Space: The hotel is a courtyard, so the common spaces were patio tables and chairs stationed throughout the hotel. We sat at them most mornings as we planned our days, and at night with a beer or two. It was never crowded, and we never fought for space.

Staff: Everyone at the Sihe was incredibly nice and friendly. The front desk women spoke great English and gave us advice on where to eat, which attractions to see etc. Julia even translated a note for us from English to Chinese. So kind!

Overall, a great way to experience old, authentic Beijing. For a group of adventurous travelers looking for something unique, this was a great fit for us!

Room Tip: If you're traveling with others, book the largest rooms possible. The rooms that are "deluxe" or say that they sleep 2-3 felt cramped. We stayed in a large room on our last night and wish we would have done so the entire trip.

I can't improve over what everyone else has already said. I do have one suggestion: reserve the largest room you can afford unless you are a single person who travels light. Our room #806 is listed as a Deluxe I think, but I felt it was a bit small for me and my husband and our two large suitcases. (There was no dresser to store clothing so we had to live out of our suitcases for 4 nights.) Couples should definitely start at the Deluxe category or higher if you want to enjoy your room for anything other than just sleeping. The sitting chairs in the rooms are really not useful except for keeping clothing and items off the floor. Room 806 was also a bit musty smelling during our June visit and we had small gnat-like flies coming up out of the shower drain due to the humidity and wet weather.

Room Tip: Contact the hotel directly using their website to inquire about rooms before you book, since each room is different. They can help you select the best room for your needs and preferences and confirm availability.

The staff there were excellent and rooms are very nice. They even have nice bikes for cycling in the great cycling city. Like the courtyard very much, and will stay there again if I go back to Beijing.

It's a little hard to find initially, but well worth the effort. The manager and staff are very helpful with good English skills. In fact, since it is a small hotel, the manager took the time to give me a private tea ceremony with 10yr old special pur-erh tea! They also have free bike rental and the forbidden city is a pleasant mile or so walk. There is a generous breakfast served at 7am. The neighborhood is interesting to experience as you see many kids, dogs, and people going about their business. Not far from small shops and restaurants.

Room Tip: The website has good directions.
