“Not what we expected after reading resecent reviews”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

Unlike many other reviewers, I found this hotel to be very disappointing. In fact, I have difficulties to understand why this hotel has received so many positive ratings and reviews.

The positive aspects can be summarized as being the free pick-up from the airport (which is a necessity for otherwise it will be rather difficult to find this hotel as a first time visitor) and we hired a car + driver from the hotel for a day tour to the Great Wall which was rather smooth (even though the driver did not speak a word of English). That’s where the positive stops.

The Location: It is in a Hutong where you need to watch your steps to avoid the dog poop and other filth. Taxis are generally reluctant to drive into the Hutong; hence one needs to walk from the main street, which is a good 5 minute walk. Normally, no big deal; but for the foregoing reason not a real pleasure either. While the first walk through was certainly an interesting experience; it quickly loses its appeal if one has to do it every day of one’s stay in Beijing.

The Room: Our room was okay; but not good value. We were dissatisfied with the standard of cleaning; especially in the bathroom. The Wifi-signal in the room was rather weak. TV is available but only but 1 Chinese channels. We had a room facing the bigger ‘courtyard’ which is shown on most photos. The photos are misleading; the yard is much (!) smaller than it appears from the photos and it is not particularly well maintained.

The Breakfast: Not enjoyable at all. The breakfast room is very small and not inviting; try rather to sit outside. The food and beverage selection is limited (white toast bread, 2 sorts of jam, butter, eggs, some cereals, some fruits (mostly water melon)) and very basic.

The Service: The staff were never exactly unfriendly, but equally at no point was there a genuine gesture of friendliness towards us.

In summary, I share the opinion of other / earlier reviewers who rated this hotel as “poor” and I recommend that you also read their reviews before deciding on this hotel purely based on the more recent reviews

I can only review on the room and experience I had. Our room was small, dimly lit,Aircon struggled to work, only one tv channel that wasn't Chinese it was news and repeated continuously .On arrival we asked could we change or upgrade to a better room only to be shown a smaller one, I guess there must be better rooms available. Our room was two star and worth less than $50 a night, the staff were nice and friendly, breakfast was good, the airport shuttle seamless, the hotel wasn't far from the metro (most places are not) ,some local resturants nearby are good. The walk to the main shopping area is around 1.2 Kim extra each way this adds up in the heat. I have stayed in better locations in better hotels in Beijing previously for the same money as the Sihe Courtyard. The Hutong experience was good but we were bored in our average room.

Room Tip: Pay for the best you can afford, but be aware some rooms are not very good.

After staying at Beijing Sihe Courtyard Hotel for a week, I am glad that I had made the right choice to choose this hotel. We used the free airport pickup but waited for an hour due to traffic jam. The hotel is located in a narrow lane, will be difficult to find if you go on your own. However, when you get to know the place, the hotel is just about 300m to the main street. It is within walking distance to the subway and Wangfujing street. Around the hotel, there is a nice Sichun restaurant. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The rooms are quite small with not much space to put our luggage. The hotel is quiet and peaceful. I would recommend to those who want an authentic feel of Beijing.

We stayed at the Beijing Sihe Courtyard Hotel as a family in June. We had booked the hotel after reading the great reviews online about the peace and quiet, as well as the friendly staff and the unique Hutong experience. The hotel did not disappoint.

However, if you're looking for a Westernized experience, this is NOT it. This hotel is best for the adventurous traveler who's looking to get away from the well-known "name brand" hotels. If you're looking for an authentic experience, t his is it!

Location: The hotel was close to the subway and many little shops that sold clothing, food, grocery items etc. However, it's not that easy to find; you need to walk a significant ways down an alley way that most taxis and cars can't or won't drive down. Don't be worried! Once you find it, you'll be glad you made the trek.

Food: The Sihe serves a continental-style breakfast each morning, which always included coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, pastries, assorted cereals, bread for toast, French toast, fruit and wonton soup. They had rotating foods as well, which included meatballs, noodles etc. They also will make you eggs to order. We loved this breakfast each morning. It was very convenient to be able to eat a nice breakfast at the hotel before heading out for the day.

Rooms: Very authentic Chinese. The bathrooms have been upgraded, and feature nice sinks and showers. The beds (most of them four-poster) have silk bedding with Chinese embroidery. The flat pillows and hard mattresses made us nervous at first, but we surprisingly slept great. The rooms also featured desks and chairs (which weren't that comfortable), as well as mini-refrigerators and a TV. The decor, bedding, lighting, furniture etc. were all very authentic Chinese. A great experience, if that's what you're looking for.

Common Space: The hotel is a courtyard, so the common spaces were patio tables and chairs stationed throughout the hotel. We sat at them most mornings as we planned our days, and at night with a beer or two. It was never crowded, and we never fought for space.

Staff: Everyone at the Sihe was incredibly nice and friendly. The front desk women spoke great English and gave us advice on where to eat, which attractions to see etc. Julia even translated a note for us from English to Chinese. So kind!

Overall, a great way to experience old, authentic Beijing. For a group of adventurous travelers looking for something unique, this was a great fit for us!

Room Tip: If you're traveling with others, book the largest rooms possible. The rooms that are "delux...

I can't improve over what everyone else has already said. I do have one suggestion: reserve the largest room you can afford unless you are a single person who travels light. Our room #806 is listed as a Deluxe I think, but I felt it was a bit small for me and my husband and our two large suitcases. (There was no dresser to store clothing so we had to live out of our suitcases for 4 nights.) Couples should definitely start at the Deluxe category or higher if you want to enjoy your room for anything other than just sleeping. The sitting chairs in the rooms are really not useful except for keeping clothing and items off the floor. Room 806 was also a bit musty smelling during our June visit and we had small gnat-like flies coming up out of the shower drain due to the humidity and wet weather.

Room Tip: Contact the hotel directly using their website to inquire about rooms before you book, since each ro...

The staff there were excellent and rooms are very nice. They even have nice bikes for cycling in the great cycling city. Like the courtyard very much, and will stay there again if I go back to Beijing.
