This was exactly the kind of experience we'd been hoping it would be! Beautifully restored rooms to modern standards in a historic building, spacious, nicely decorated with Chinese furnishings. Exceptional staff who were very helpful with any question, planning our trip to the Great Wall, arranged airport transfers, gave us a book of "flashcards" with all the destinations around Beijing to show to taxis where we wanted to go, prepared really nice breakfast every morning and dinner a couple of nights. We stayed 10 days and would definitely stay here again. The walk through the alleyway from the main road was something to be gotten used to, but proved to be safe and an important part of the hutong/old Beijing experience (as did the hotel, in comfort and style). Personal, boutique atmosphere and worth the price. Reliable internet. Lovely dining area. No fitness room.

This hotel is in an refurbished old compound and is beautifully done. The rooms are beautiful and all face the courtyard. The restaurant serves good food and seems to cater to a local art crowd, which gives it a very cool vibe. The staff were all very friendly and the location is good. The only problem is that there is no Chinese name for the hotel and no one knows where it is, so you have to carry the hotel's business card with you if you want to take a taxi back. It's in the middle of an old hutong so can be tough for even the local cab drivers to find.

Overall it's a great, peaceful Beijing experience that feels cool, local and authentic (sort of). But mostly just cool.

For those reviews whining about the location - the whole point is that you are deep inside a traditional hutong and not on a main street in a big western hotel. If that appeals then this is a charming and wonderful place to stay. We stayed in a deluxe suite and it was exactly as portrayed. The staff are helpful if not totally fluent in English.

Walking back and forth along the hutong was one of the highlights of our Beijing stay.

If you want to experience old Beijing and have a genuine feel about the city, Cote Cour is the right place to be. The hotel is authentic and has a lot of charm. It is a beautiful old historical Chinese mansion with elegant architecture. The courtyard of the hotel is fantastic.

The hotel is very well located, in one of Beijing’s hutongs, at the heart of the city and on walking distance from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The staff is pleasant, efficient, and very helpful. The rooms are good and comfortable. The small modern style lobby is nice and cozy.

Breakfast is good. Do not expect to have refined Chinese cuisine at the hotel. The hotel does not pretend to have such standards anyway. You should explore delicious Chinese food in Beijing's restaurants and there are very good ones close to the hotel. Just ask the receptionist for recommendations.

Some reviews mention that the hotel is very difficult to find and that it is difficult to catch a taxi near the hotel. This is true but it constitutes part of the experience. It is in fact very easy to find a taxi if you walk five minutes down the alley to the main road. It is also easy to find the hotel by walking if the taxi drops you at the entrance of the “Yanyue” hutong. Walking in the hutongs is very interesting anyway… If you don't feel like walking, you can take a rickshaw which can take you anywhere in the small streets of the hutongs.

In summary, Hotel Cote Cour is comfortable and authentic, and it gives you a real sense of old Beijing. I spent two nights there and it was a great experience!

My husband and I stayed here for a mini vacation. The room was very large and comfortable and the property was very pretty. However, it was EXTREMELY difficult to get a taxi. You must take a 5-minute walk down the hutong (alley) to the main road and then it is catch-as-catch-can to get a taxi. One day we waited in the rain for nearly 45 minutes futilely trying to get a taxi. We finally gave up and walked to our destination. Also, the hotel indicates that it has small snacks available everyday. However, one evening after returning from a full day of site-seeing we attempted to order some dumplings and a bowl of noodles and were told this was not possible. We were not given a reason other than "no food tonight." As a result, we ended up eating some granola bars we had packed in our suitcases because we were too exhausted to try and get a taxi to go to dinner. Overall, the place is nice, but it is very inconvenient.

Really lovely hotel, it has a sense of peace just what is needed after a day sight seeing in the city. The staff were always very welcoming and friendly and keen to please. I was, however glad I had read the review which described the street as I feel I would have been a little off put had I not been expecting a rather shabby area. That said I never felt at all worried or unsafe walking back to the hotel at any point even late a night. I would certainly recommend this to anyone.

We loved staying here. It was way better than expected. The hotel is in a great, traditional, local hutong (alleyway) that initially seems somewhat odd but quickly grows on you. The front gates are beautiful and draw you in to the hotel. The rooms are stunning and a great mix of modern and traditional, as is the breakfast room. The courtyard is stunning, although it was way to hot to sit out there for even a moment. The service was very good and the staff accommodated us always with a smile. Highly highly recommended.
