“It's not like it seems”
Reviewed 3 June 2012

I realized that there are some places for package tourists and others for individual tourists.
The hall is big and beautiful, breakfast was poor considering to a 5 star-hotel and separated from the other guests who were not in a tour, the room was very spacious, bathroom was clean, but we had a problem with the toilet, but staff was kind and we had that fixed.
Location was good and there is a little street where you can purchase from souveniers to exotic food like scorpions: very nice and different!
What made me decide to rate this hotel as average was the fact that I didn't feel like I was in a 5 star hotel as they say since we were mostly separated from the other individual guests and room and food seemed to be of a lower quality. I thought that very strange and rare.

The hotel is a short walk to Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The Wangfujing pedestrian street is just around the corner. So the location is good. The only problem is a big freeway in front of the hotel. You should better take a room on a high floor.

My room was 1415 on the 14th floor. The checkin was fast and friendly. Here is my thought about my stay:

Pro
+ Good big room (big room safe, sitting area)
+ Nice control on the bed (a/c and light)
+ LCD with hundreds of TV programs (4 in English)
+ Good bathroom
+ Good breakfast (many choice of warm and cold food)
+ Location

Cons
- Noise from the street
- The seats of the breakfast restaurant. You sit so deep in these seats.
- Balcony was closed. Maybe better. It doesn’t look very safe.

This hotel was prebooked as part of a roundtrip. It was not bad. But I don’t know if I would choose it again.

Room Tip: Take a room on a high floor.

The beijing hotel is renowned as the best hotel in China, maybe because most of the party leaders stay there. I seen nothing special about it.
It's location is ideal, and right in the heart of the city.
The staff are about as helpfull as an ashtray on a motorbike i.e not helpfull at all.
The hotels bar is nice

Trivia: it was from these windows that the footage of "tank man" was shot.

I used to stay there during many trips to Beijing, but now the hotel has faded. No more service at the desk. We had to wait 3 hours until our room was cleaned !!! Anything to offer us while waiting? Nothing ! The staff at the desk hardly spoke English, and they are not more very friendly. This was the last time. Ps. the taxis do not want to go there often. We were very disappointed.

Aged Hotel with nice views and very central location. Good value for money.
Executive floor happy hour food was tragic... better do not serve anything than this kind of food. Tragic.

However in the evening time there is a large number of pimps occupying the downstairs lobby and aggresivly bothering EVERYONE to get a prostitute to your room... Why is the hotel not doing anything against such behaviour. We had customers with us and they were seriously offended and questioning in which hotel we have asked them to stay. I am living in China for many years... but never had such aggressive behaviour encountered - ever.

The location is the main feature, the Forbidden City, Wangfujing Street and Tianamen Square are all within easy walking distance. The rooms are clean and well serviced. Service staff seem friendly but may have little English so if you have a problem I suggest you contact reception rather than try to deal with the room attendants. If you attend the daily raising of the flag in Tianamen Square be there by 5am, it is very popular with Chinese and foreign tourists. The subway is just outside the hotel main entrance and the Oriental Plaza Mall is just across the road in Wangfujing Street (don't miss the Mall). The Executive Rooms on the 16th floor are a bit more expensive but are definately worth it, especially because of free internet. Some rooms have great views of the Forbidden City and adjacent Hutongs. You also get access to the lounge which is great, it provides good breakfast and snacks to 10pm and use of meeting roooms. The restaurants are very good and for business the hotel conference rooms are fantastic. Some of the reviewer comments make me wonder if the writers have any understanding that Beijing is not like Washington DC, there are language issues and different cultural concepts which can make for frustrations, but a little patience and flexibility goes a long way to make the Beijing experience worthwhile. The hotel has 100 years of history, for example President Nixon stayed here during the ping pong negotiations which ended the USA-China freeze. Most of the taxi drivers know the hotel which is a definate bonus. Stay with bottled water, some is free in the rooms and there are signs to boil tap water in hotel rooms. Check out (at 12 noon) can be a slow process, but the hotel will store baggage if you check out and have a late flight. For tourist or business this is a good hotel choice in Beijing.

Room Tip: The Executive 16th floor rooms are good value.

This is truely hotel in the heart of Beijing. It locates very close to Wangfujing street and Tian an men. If you expect Hotel where is the historical of Beijing. Here is that. But don't expect for that the hotel deserves for the 5 star rate. Breakfast and bed are everage.
