Reception was poor at communication and horribly rude

Review of Qianmen Hostel
1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 6 Aug 2018
We made a mistake on our reservation and needed to arrive a day later than scheduled. We emailed the hostel explaining this very clearly, and we asked if they could hold the room for us, and that we were willing to pay the full cost of the night. They replied saying no problem.
Then when we arrived, they told us they had no room for us, and were laughing at us, while they told us we had no room. After a bit of arguing, they got the owner, who opened the email and after a moment realized the mistake, and told us he could put us in a different room for that night because he had already sold the room we had reserved. But in order for us to do this, we had to pay him half of the fee for the night we missed even though the room was reserved.
Then he later told me to go to reception to ask for complimentary shampoo. I did, and the receptionist told me I could go out and buy some because they don't offer shampoo. Only when the owner told her to give me shampoo did she admit that they did, in fact have it.
The next morning we went on a tour of the Forbidden City, and when we met our tour guide, he said he had called the hostel the night previously just to confirm with us, but the receptionist was incredibly rude to him and refused to leave us a message and hung up on him.

So yeah, horrible reception staff and owner kind of ripping us off for his own mistake. There are a bunch of hostel's in the area, so don't waste your time with this one.

The hotel is very accessible to many tourist attractions like the Forbidden City and Tiannanmen Square. It is a walking distance to two subway stations. There are numerous shops and restaurants nearby. The only downside is that the rooms are quite small.

The location of the hostel is very good indeed, but unfortunately the place is extremely dirty (compared to other hostels in Beijing). In particular the washrooms and the showers were unpleasant to use. Our room was overbooked (one guy had to leave even though he had made a reservation) and too small to accommodate as many people as they put in there.
The cherry on top is that the staff neither speaks English, nor seems to be bothered to help you anyways. Cannot recommend this place! There is better ones...

Great location near the bus and train stations. Walkable to Tiananmen, forbidden city and other attractions near the vicinity. You will never go hungry as food are everywhere just outside the hostel.

However the only cons is the floor in the room was dusty and the towels have stains. Luckily we have our own towels therefore that was not really an issue.

Overall it was a great stay at the hostel

Having stayed previously in budget hotels in Beijing, I this time opted for a hostel .The location is excellent and unlike Chinese hotels the staff spoke excellent English which made things much easier. The location is brilliant for Tiananmen Square and Beijing sightseeing. Easy to find, clean and a great price

We didn't have reservation when we arrived as the staff hadn't read emails. Nevertheless, we managed to get a nice room for a decent price. The owner was really helpful and spoke English but it was more difficult to communicate with the staff as their English was limited. The location is central (couldn't be better) and there is a cosy patio in the hostel.
