“Good location but Hard to get a taxi”
Reviewed 29 May 2013

Next to Ritz and close to a high end shopping mail. Better than the average standard of JW Marriott. We waited 45min for taxi because of rain. Not enough taxi come to the front entrance. It located about ten minutes walking distance to the subway station.

The hotel was nice but I only gave an average rating for service because they gave me a hard time about the rate I was using. I was invited by a colleague from a software company to meet up while I was in town and offered to let me use his company's rate. I do consulting work for the software so it's typical that we use their rate sometimes. The ladies at the reception didn't let me update to the executive rooms even though I was willing to pay for the premium. Other than that, everything else was great.

My wife and I were put in this hotel as part of a pre-cruise tour. We could not have picked a better place. The breakfast buffet was out of this world. We had a choice of Asian, European or Western dishes all prepaired excellently. The hotel was lovely and the room was very comfortable. The staff spoke English so it was very comfortable for two Americans traveling in China for the first time.

This is a beautiful hotel with a very helpful staff. The room was large and beautifully decorated with extremely comfortable beds. Even the bathroom was quite large with plenty of counter space and a wonderful shower. The view from the window was of the business area of the city. We stayed five nights using points. We were also upgraded to the concierge level privileges (but not the room) because we have gold status. Therefore we were able to enjoy a buffet breakfast every day which had wonderful American and Asian choices. It also had a buffet dinner included. Since we had large lunches the dinners were perfect for us. These two meals saved us a large sum of money. My only complaints were that the magnifying mirror was not lit and that the toilet had to be repaired twice because it didn't flush properly. However both times someone was sent up immediately to repair it. This hotel definitely deserves five stars!

Celebrity cruise ship excursion booked us to stay here overnight. One of the best 5-star hotels we have ever stayed worldwide. Beautiful and spacious bathroom and bedroom with 2 doubles. Excellent sound insulation. Fantastic buffet breakfast of western and Asian dishes. A short taxi ride to TianAn Men Square. Highly recommended.

If there were ten stars available, this hotel would rate them all. The entire hotel is immaculate, the rooms large and luxurious, and oh so clean. As Gold status Marriott, we were upgraded to Executive Level, a regular room with Lounge privileges. We had daily breakfasts and dinners in the lounge, including wines and desserts. Delicious and very convenient after a full day of touring. We asked that a light bulb be replaced in our room and within minutes the "engineer" was at our door. This is service at the highest level. While so grateful for the magnifying mirror in the bathroom, I would suggest that they be replaced with lighted mirrors, where the mirror is placed the light is lacking....if that is the only criticism after five days at this hotel you can see how fabulous our experience was!

We spent 3 nights at the JW Marriott in Beijing purely as tourists, no business. Our experience was very good, but may have suffered in comparison to the JW Marriott Shanghai which we had just left. The Beijing property is not as impressive - and it really can't be given it's position in the city (a little bit removed from the major sites, not much view to speak of) or that it sits on the ground floor, not 39 stories in the air as in Shanghai. For a fairly new hotel, the architecture and interior design seem older and dark - the lobby feels like a bunker, so it might be a matter of style and the fact that we would would prefer a more open, light decor.

The rooms are very good size, not huge, but spacious enough with large bathrooms. (okay, I also disliked the gold color used in the carpet and bathroom, but that's a personal issue - it was all in good condition) It was quiet (virtually no people or noise in hallways), the internet worked perfectly (free for Marriott members), bottled water was left without asking, and several pieces of fresh fruit as well. The breakfast buffet was enormous and well-kept; I can't think of anything that was missing. The Cafe also provided very nice dinners and the staff was very pleasant - even those with limited English were smiling and did their best to be hospitable and correct any errors in orders. There is an outdoor seating area adjacent to the cafe that is a terrific place to sit for afternoon drinks or evening dinner - it was shady and because of it's position, it offered a great place to relax outdoors without traffic or noise.

The hotel's location worked well enough for us since we had a private guide/car taking us around all day. The sites in Beijing require some transportation in between and the JW is not quite as central as we might have liked. If we had wanted to do more at night, it could have been a hassle, but we were so exhausted after 9 hours sightseeing, we were content to stay close Traffic is part of life in Beijing and since we live in Los Angeles, it wasn't that odd to be sitting in slow traffic. It's just that the area around the JW is not that inviting to just stroll around - there is a high-end designer mall next door and a Ritz-Carlton (with a spectacular Italian restaurant) but otherwise, it's not a neighborhood to walk around much.

We did have a minor few problems that arose during our stay -- a shower drain that didn't work, a very slow check-in because they weren't familiar with the on-line package I had booked (on the Marriott site, not some other 3rd party!), and a very slow check-out. All were resolved, but not without some communications difficulties (the general level of English seemed better in Shanghai than Beijing- although when you went next door to the Ritz Carlton, everyone from the doorman up seemed to have better language skills). We just had a nagging sense that this property could use a little more direct supervisor/manager presence providing a little more oversight, so that things would be even better down to the smallest detail.

By contrast, at the recommendation of a friend, we had dinner at the adjacent Ritz Carlton (same management) in Barolo, their Italian restaurant. It is like being in Italy, with terrific service in every way. The restaurant manager, Lydia He, spent time with us and the chef came out to say hello as well -- and the food was outstanding. Prices are in line with international standards, although wine prices are high (as in all of China). Two thumbs up!

Room Tip: It won't matter a great deal given the area of the city, but there is a power plant on one side...
