My husband and I and three teenage sons stayed here for six nights. it was wonderful. It is a very small hotel (only five or six rooms), with a small courtyard in the middle. The two young men who staff the hotel -- Young and Freeman -- are wonderful young men. Their English is great and they are very warm and friendly. Our teenage boys loved them. They were very helpful with suggestions, but were not pushy about package tours.

The location is perfect, just a few block from the subway line (both lines 1 & 5), and lots of stores and vendors nearby. Great dumplings in the alley in the morning and good coffee from the nearby french bakery. The food court in the nearby Oriental Plaza (a kind of gross high end mall) is quite good with food from all over for decent prices.

If you like the Ritz, this is not it. But it is a great small hotel with a real Chinese feel. It was perfect for us.

Room Tip: We rented the two

We are a family of four, two kids 6 and 3 years.
We visited The Emporer's Guard in early June.
From the start the whole experience was good. The room was easy to book and Young assisted us with all our pre visit requests.
From arranging a pick up taxi at 2 a.m. to sorting out the best local breakfast money could buy!
The courtyard atmosphere and the other guests made our stay one to remember.
So if you want to stay in a square box western hotel I would recommend the Emporer's Guard Hotel,
Also the location is close to the transit system and all popular tourist sites.

Although the rooms are not superb, the service and the friendly environment made our stay very pleasant. Staff was always attentive to our needs, and made every effort to help us in any way. Will definitely stay again.

We stayed here only one night, but we wished it had been more. It is close to the main sights and streets, but set in a authentic Hutong (local crisscross of sidestreets). It is a self contained B&B with 5 rooms i think. Whilst the rooms aren't the most polished, they are thoughtfully decorated and sitting in the central courtyard is a joy. But the real joy is the helpfullness and friendly welcome of the owners. I'd happyly go back.

Room Tip: Check whether you have an en-suite bathroom

Situated near to the major tourist sites, but in real lived in hutong location it was all I expected and more. Authentic, so whilst the rooms are beautifully furnished and the bathrooms are modern, the origonal features and layout remain. Part of the charm is sitting in the courtyard drinking green tea and having a choice of fruit, yoghurt or toast for breakfast - if you want a fried breakfast and western restaurant go to a chain hotel. Our hosts Rocky and Jerry went out of their way to look after us (me, my 18 year old son and my sister who joined us from Tokyo). They arranged trips, sorted taxis etc and genuinely put themselves out for us - always with a smile. I even practised Tai Chi with a Master in the Courtyard - priceless. Would go back and definetly recommend if you want a real Beijing experience. Oh - good value too.

Room Tip: Just ask....
