“Great Hutong Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2013

We stayed here for 4 nights in February, 2012. Rooms are small but cozy. Young, the manager, was helpful and very accomodating. He took us around the block to a great place for steamed dumplings, arranged for a taxi to the airport at 5 am and arranged tours to the Great Wall and to an acrobatic show. The acrobatic show ended up being a tourist trap. If you have seen Cirque du Soleil I would skip the acrobatic show since it looks amaturish in comparison. The train station is a couple of blocks away and the surrounding area is a mixture of new and old. You really have the opportunity to explore the hutong on your own. Don't forget to look up and discover pigeon coops in the back of many hutong apartments. This is a great place to stay for an authentic Beijing experience.

"Welcome!" Every time we arrived or returned to the Inn, Young, the Inn's Manager greeted us with sincere grace. He is an exceptional young man, committed to making every visitor's stay comfortable and memorable. His local knowledge is invaluable. As many Beijingers do not read maps Young's directions and recommendations made exploring this fabulous city so much easier.
The Inn itself is rustic, scrupulously clean, quiet and a real haven from the hustle and bustle of this great city. The beds are comfortable, the ablutions facilities acceptable, air-con worked well and provided much needed clean air after explorations. Young gets breakfast dishes from local vendors; let him know what you like and he will go to great lengths to obtain it for you.
With only five rooms, the courtyard provides a great meeting place for breakfast, drinks and quiet conversation.
This is a very different experience of Beijing than most tourists would have and well worth the challenge of finding a taxi driver knowledgeable enough to get you there.
We felt safe, secure, and in the company of a good local friend.

Emperor's Guard Courtyard hotel is a friendly and quiet place, within easy walking to the Dongdan metro station. The owner Young Zhang is very helpful - he speaks good English and seems to be forever on hand if you have any questions. I was there with my 10year old daughter and the free wifi was great for her! The courtyard is a lovely place for breakfast, brought to you from local street sellers by Young Zhang. An added plus is that you meet other travellers and can share tips etc.

Both the hotel and the owner are awesome. For quite a reasonable price we got a nice room in chinese style, having everything you really need + a very nice host, who is always there, willing to help you and answer all the questions. I think that the hotel is a nice option for everyone looking not only for the place to stay, but also wishing to experience China (this is not a good choice for spoiled people - there are chain hotels at similar price offering you what you have in good european hotels). The place is very quiet, with only few rooms around a nice courtyard, 3-5 minutes walk to the metro station, and with many authentic restaurants around, serving great food. There is also a small collection of books and guide books, that you can use during your stay.

This courtyard hotel is very cute and the service was beyond excellent. After exploring Beijing we perhaps would have opted for accommodation nearer North Dongcheng than Dongdam. But we were ultimately pleased with our choice, and getting around via cab or metro in Beijing is pretty straightforward. For an insight into Chinese culture and the best possible assistance from staff (and if Beijing is your first Chinese experience - you'll need some help) then Emperor's Guards can't be faulted.

We enjoyed staying here so much we extended our stay for an extra two nights. The best thing about this hotel is the location in an unpretentious and genuine hutong, completely unlike the commercial ones that have been tarted up with poncy coffee bars. The hutong has lots of great and cheap restaurants with staff who made the effort to understand our sign language, and lovely street food (the pancakes with fried egg, sauce and lettuce are fab). there is a friendly fruit seller and a couple of useful mini marts.
The hotel's 6 rooms are arranged around a peaceful courtyard that seems a world away from the busy Beijing streets, despite the fact that you are actually very centrally located, 5 mins walk from dong dan station, and v near the forbidden city etc.
Yang, the guy who works there, is very friendly and helpful. He even accompanied us to the travel agent to help us buy our high speed train tickets to shanghai. And he ran after us to return the tip we had left him!
The beds were large and comfortable, the shower always hot, and the aircon quiet.
The place could do with a lick of paint and it suffers from Beijing dust. The breakfast, which was included, was passable (sliced bread, tea eggs and instant coffee). The laundry was extortionate. But all in all this was a great place to stay.
