“Reasonable option in Beibei”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 December 2013

Stayed here for a week. My first impressions were its size (very large), the number of guests (small) and its breakfast buffet (large, mostly local foods and pretty good on the whole). I was told they did not have non-smoking rooms available, and perhaps none at all. The bathrooms were large, the bed was reasonably comfortable. TV had a few English news stations, and channel 4 and 12 I think had English or subtitles. The front desk staff usually had at least one person who spoke enough English. Had lunch in the Chinese restaurant one day, and was pretty good. Downsides were the smokey smell, they are working on the "spa" portion of the building (so some construction noise early some mornings), could be difficult for people from outside to contact me on my room phone ("It was impossible to call you"), the small exercise room was unheated (and 40-50 degrees in the morning) and at least once it was locked and I could not get in. For that, there is a little white button you press on top of the service desk to get their attention, if there is someone around. They also charge by the hour. Also, you have to check if the machine is plugged in, and turn on using a switch facing the wall (not on the face of the control panel, but behind it). The hotel was packed one day for a birthday party, they turned on the front fountain, had lots of staff around, and they place seemed to wake up, then go to sleep again after. Went walking around the neighborhood a few times. There is an interesting stairway towards the mountain, and the "pedestrian street" nearby is good for people watching, not for shopping so much. After this I stayed in the Xi'an Sheraton North and the Hyatt on the Bund and both were great, and in comparison this hotel was not the best experience, but probably on the high end of what's available for the price in Beibei, which of course is pretty far from downtown Chongqing.

Room Tip: Facing the inner courtyard are likely quieter, when there is no construction.

Stayed for 3 nights. The chonqing area is too big as its a province! So choose hotel carefully as the distances are large. This one was near to my meeting point but almost 1.5 hours from airport! The hotel is huge but seems as its not being fully utlised due to lower occupancy levels. The room rates are reasonable. English language problem is there as very few english speaking staff, especially in room service. Breakfast area is huge and lavish breakfast is there! Overall good value for money hotel. It can get much better if the occupancy improves and the overall service level improves as hotel is too big for its boots!

This is a brand new "5 star" hotel complete with all the amenities thereof. The appearance is very nice and modern and everything looks perfect to the eye.

If Singapore is the city of light and Hong Kong the city of life, Chongqing is the city of neither. The roads are empty by Chinese standards and there are few if any lights on in the city other than street lights. It's amazing to see so many dark buildings and so few people around. An apocalyptic movie could be filmed here without needing to disturb the locals.

On arrival the first thing we noticed other than the heavy pollution was the sweet smell of sewage that followed into the lobby. Check-in took a long time and they were unable to produce keys at the front desk. Eventually we were taken to our rooms and let in by the valet. Our keys were given to us about 45 minutes later.

The rooms are large and have soft beds. Again everything was very modern and - except for the heat - in good working order. There is free wired internet in the rooms and convenient Ethernet cords provided.

All rooms appear to be smoking rooms and the smell of smoke was noticeable but not strong. The heat was off and the windows open on arrival and even several hours of running the heat did not completely warm up the room. The thermostat in my room got as high as 18C by 1am.

Around 1am I was awakened by the very strong smell of lacquer. They had re-lacquered the hallway and the smell was unbearable in the hallways and just very unpleasant in my room. I opened the windows, got out the spare duvet in the closet, and doubled over the one on the bed to produce a 4 layer duvet that was quite warm despite the now frigid room temperature. The smell of sewage was the first to flood in followed by the pollution. Soon my eyes and throat were burning and I felt like I was suffocating from the combination of lacquer, cigarette smoke, air pollution, and sewage smell.

The hotel has done many things very well. Many of my complaints are beyond the hotel's control. If not for the lacquering and pollution I'd rate this one of the better hotels I've stayed at in China.

  • Liked — Modern and new
  • Disliked — Midnight lacquering smell unbearable
