Musty smell & Poor service!
Booked and paid for hotel room on Agoda for 3 (three) adult persons.
Clearly showed 3 adults on booking!
Husband, wife and 18 year old son.
When we arrived they told us the room only had one double bed or 2 singles.
They told us we could either have the 3 of us stay in one double or 2 single - our choice!
Or if we wanted to pay an extra 400 hkd per night then they would supply us with a fold out bed.
We argued for some time about the fact that we clearly booked and paid for a room which very clearly showed 3 adults on the booking, and that it was clearly wrong to accept a booking for 3 adults with 2 single beds or 1 double and that it was morally wrong to attempt to charge more for the room after we had booked and paid for it and when we have arrived at 8 oclock at night after travelling for 11 hours.
They then told us that the 3 of us would have to sleep in either one double or 2 singles and asked to choose which.
We then disputed for some time that in this calibre of hotel that they should expect 3 adults to sleep in one double or 2 singles, and after demanding our money back so we could move to a different hotel which would supply bedding for 3 adults, they finally agreed to put a fold up bed in our room.
After spending more than 20 minutes trying to check in they sent us to our room and sent a housekeeping lady up with a fold out bed. When we all went in to the room, firstly, the musty smell was overwhelming.
It was obvious the bed would not fit in the room in the configuration it was in. The housekeeper shrugged her shoulders and wheeled the bed out of the room after we rang the desk and informed them that it was not possible to put the bed in unless someone removed the couch from the room and even then it was a squeeze.
We sat in the room for a further 10 minutes waiting for them tomtell us what was going to happen before leaving and going downstairs to find out what was going on.
It took another half an hour before we finally got another room - no bigger - but they agreed to move out the couch so we could fit a bed in.
We went out for an hour to allow this to happen.
We complained to reception that this room was too small really to take 3 adults. The reception told us that this was the biggest room the hotel had, yet when we asked one of the other staff they said "no... There are other rooms much bigger!"

The hallways smelt musty.

After 3 days, we left and moved into the Nathan Hotel which was great.
We booked this on Agoda for 3 adults. No problems. Simply checked in.
Room was excellent. 1 king size bed and one single bed in a room which was twice the size of the Rennaissance and which had a sliding door between the beds/rooms.

Cost was USD$50 less per night AND breakfast for 3 was included - unlike the Renaissance.
Staff were very friendly at the Nathan. Staying there for a week.
Next time:Just STAY AT THE NATHAN.

Room Tip: Rooms smell musty in August / Do NOT book for more than 2 persons. Expect to pay for more than it is worth. Better value elsewhere.

This hotel has a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. The staff always greet us with a smile and they are always ready to cater to all our needs. They are very efficient and at the same time very friendly. They make us feel as if we were friends coming to visit. We feel very welcome. My husband and I stay often at this hotel and we have done so for many years. They have kept the high standard of service throughout all these years and yet always find room for improvement. This hotel should be a role model for all the hotels in the Marriott chain. Their harbour view rooms have one of the best views in Hong Kong, especially the ones in the middle (rooms ending in 22 to 24) that have a 180 degrees view of the Victoria Harbour. The corner suite (room ending in 29 if I'm not mistaken) is also spectacular. Spacious, comfortable, large bathroom and gorgeous views all around. They have a wonderful Chinese restaurant called Dinasty. It is being renovated at them moment but when it is open again don't miss the chance of trying their food. It is really great! Their buffet breakfast at Café Renaissance is also excellent, with a large variety of high quality food to please every taste. The location of the hotel is perfect, both for business, trade fairs (It is right next door to the Convention Center) or for leisure. The subway (MTR Wanchai) and the ferry (Star Ferry to cross to Kowloon side) are just a 5 or 10 minutes walk from the hotel. There are also many restaurants and bars nearby.

Room Tip: The wifi is free if you are a Marriott member! I think it is worth applying for membership to have free wifi. The wifi is consistent and fast.

My family and I stayed here this month for 3 nights and we loved it, we requested a room on a higher floor with a view of the harbour and were so excited by our amazing views and interconnecting rooms, which were so comfortable with modern decor. The rooms were cleaned really well too. The breakfasts were amazing!! A huge range of different foods for everyone and so yummy. The hotel location is ideal, a few minutes walk to the tube station and the star ferry. The staff are really helpful and offered us lots of advice on where to go and when and the best ways to get to places, faultless service. I really loved this hotel, although it is more of a corporate hotel it is still so welcoming for families. The only thing I would mention is some of the prices at the pool side bar, basic drinks like Coke or lemonades are so expensive compared to most places, so be careful!
Overall though the hotel was faultless and we loved it :)

Room Tip: Higher floors have the best views!

The location is good(five minutes to the ferry seven minutes to Wan Chai MTR) and the materials in construction are of high quality, however...

It feels like they are trying to do it 'on the cheap', the housekeeping seems overworked, sometimes not adequately cleaning the rooms.

Elevator contention is a big problem. Why too many people, not enough elevators or just poor maintenance? I've no idea, maybe everyone is just going over the road, the offices are much worse... But you could be prepared for an exceptional wait, factor in a possible 5-10 minutes to get down in the morning. Should be looked at.

The swimming pool while nice and warm was cloudy, in very clear need of a clean and the shower area round the back by the bar was very dirty and cluttered, rubbish was not cleared during the day. The pool closes too early(after sunset - around 1900 Hrs HKT in summer) - bear in mind while working in HK you might finish late and might want a dip? Sorry, No Swim for you! The hotel is too busy trying to monetize the pool to serve the lucrative poolside sunset dinner and drinks market.

Service could be genuine and very helpful or not so good and could have saved the hotel from the poor score this trip if it had been consistent.

All in all, it's not by any means a bad place to stay, but it's punching well below it's weight when compared to other hotels. I stayed once before about 3-4 months back and things were much better, I think this may be due to not employing enough staff to cope with in peak season, but I hope to see improvement next time I visit - if I choose to come back.

Room Tip: Free WiFi for Marriott members so join before check in, avoid a room at the back of the hotel if you can help it - you need that harbor view to distract you from the small room.

The Marriott Hong Kong Harbor View is located very near the ferry that makes transport to Kowloon side very easy. If you are staying on the concierge level there is free breakfast, tea in the afternoon and happy hour with free wine, beer, champagne or mixed drinks every afternoon. The view over the harbor is truly wonderful and the staff is expert.

Room Tip: Get a high room on the harbor side.
