“Golden Crown Guest House.”
Reviewed 20 March 2013

We stayed at this guest room from mid Dec for a family of 2adult and 2children.

The guest house was located on the 5th floor of a building which is near to TST MTR station. Kenny provide good walking instructions (with photo) once your booking are confirmed. There is only 1 lift for the building thus long wait for the lift. We don't recommend the staircase as it is dark and dusty. Once you are out of the building, you are immediately on the busy Nathan Rd. If you are merely looking for a place to sleep in the night, this is the one and nothing more.

Room and toilet are small and tight and there are hardly any space for the luggage. During our stay, we need to change room daily although our booking was done 2mths before the trip. FYI, Golden Crown Guest House had different units in this building and we had the experience to stay in one of their room behind their counter (just a working desk).

If you are going to vising Ocean Park, Disneyland and other theme parks, the guest house could offer them at a cheaper price.

Nothing much to like except the location and I won't return again based on experience.

I would have given Golden Crown a rating of five if only it has a microwave oven and a pantry like most hostels. But putting that aside, I couldn't ask for more. Of course, the room is small but unless you're in the more expensive hotels, the size is just typical for the price. We booked a room with double bed and one single bed. It has a flat TV but not much English channels to choose from (but then, we didn't go to HK to watch TV).

The hostel is very mindful of the needs of the guests. The room is provided with three ceramic mugs for coffee, three plastic mugs for brushing our teeth, three adapters, liquid soap, shampoo, toilet paper, and towels. The comforter is wonderful, it made waking up in the morning really difficult. There is also a hot and cold water dispenser right outside our room as well as a public computer for those who want to browse the net. And yes, wifi is free and very fast. My greatest concern before I saw the room was the toilet. I had read a lot of stuff about HK hostels having very tiny toilets with shower heads right above the bowls so I was really very apprehensive. But my fears were allayed by Kenny (I think he's the owner) who assured me that the toilet is very nice. And it is true. The toilet is pretty spacious with a shower area separated by a sliding glass door. Our room has a window but nothing to be seen outside except the back view of another building so we just kept the curtains drawn. The pillow is okay but the bed is a bit hard though it isn't a problem for us. Housekeeping also makes sure that the room is cleaned everyday and towels are changed. It is such a relief to go back to a well made-up room after a tiring day.

Checking in is a breeze. Kenny's assistant met us and asked for our invoice number. Then we paid the balance in cash. We also bought there discounted tickets for Disneyland, Ocean Park, and Ngong Ping 360 standard cable car (btw, if you decide to visit Ngong Ping, make sure that you have your passport or any ID with you since the vouchers from Golden Crown says 'for overseas visitors"). The hostel is very clean and the entrance to the rooms is protected by a password to avoid outsiders from getting inside. When we left early in the morning for our flight, no one was there so we just left the room key inside the box outside the reception. There is only one elevator for odd number floors and another for even numbers. Golden Crown's reception area is at the fifth floor where our room is also located. We haven't experienced any queuing while we we there. The ground floor has a security guard and is free of seedy characters unlike in other places.

The entrance to Golden Crown could easily be missed but just bear in mind that it's between Citibank and Standard Chartered. The A21/N21 bus stop to the airport is across the street while coming from the airport, the bus stop is just a short walk away to the hostel (same side. Across the bus stop is Kowloon Park and the Mosque). The MTR is almost beside the building, making it very convenient to travel to different destinations.

Just a tip: For those who can't live without McDonalds, KFC, and Burger King, the said fastfood outlets are just along the second street from the hostel (facing the direction of Mongkok). After KFC, there's also a small shop which sells lots of souvenir items at wholesale prices. No need to bargain!

For money changers, go to Chungking Mansion which is also quite near Golden Crown. Just walk towards the ferry. Chungking is on the same side as Golden Crown. The second money changer (left side) near the entrance opens early and also provides competitive rates.

I initially booked another hostel in Chungking since Golden Crown was full when I first inquired. Fortunately, a few months later I was able to get a room so I just cancelled my other reservation. I will definitely stay here if ever I visit Hongkong again and I won't hesitate to recommend this hostel to other budget travelers like me.

Room Tip: Book early so you can get a good room since Golden Crown is very popular. Kenny is very prompt in r...

We stayed here from Sunday night of March 3 until Thursday noon of March 7. My friends and I find this hotel/guesthouse a very convenient place for short stay in HK. Their staffs are always very helpful and friendly. They are always ready to help when we need directions going to our tour of the day and back to the hotel. They also have discounted tickets of several tourist attractions and this, I can say is another plus factor of this place. We stayed in one of their triple rooms, equipped with 1 single bed and 1 double bed. We were provided with three pairs of rubber slippers, 3 bathroom mugs and 3 drinking mugs. Drinking water is provided and located at the hallway. Everyday, we get fresh clean towels and when we come back from along day's tour, the room is already clean and tidy. Overall, if I am to come back in HK, I will choose this place again.

I really like our stay in GC, housekeepers are very efficient, they cleaned our rooms everyday.
They even drop a thank you note when we gave them tips ($10/day)
We just dont want the other guest who are so noisy during our stay. I think they occupied 2-3 rooms at the 6th floor and they are so noisy on the common aread - where the water dispenser is located. They eat on the area and make some noise at wee hours.
This is not a bad review at GC, but they should have gave warnings to noisy guests.
But overall ratings we gave GC a value for money. I will definitely stay again at GC.

We got the quadruple room on the 5th floor which is just OK. We requested for a 6th floor rooms but there were no available. Elevator wait is not that long. The longest we waited was 4 mins. It is near the subway MTR, and walking distance to the Avenue of the Stars, Ferry Terminal to Macau, Star Ferry. It is in the Shopping district. Lots of stores and restaurants in the area. Booking scheduling is also organized. Last time we went to HK, we stayed at Taisan Guesthouse but their booking process is not that efficient. We had to transfer rooms next day.

Next time we go to Hong Kong, we'll stay at Golden Crown again. I highly recommend this place.

We stayed at Golden Crown for 4 nights last Jan 31- Feb 4, 2013. We stayed in their renovated double room for our first 2 nights and in their renovated couple room for the next 2 nights.

Both rooms were well-maintained although the renovated double room (at the 5th floor) was relatively newer. Our rooms were tidied up every day and fresh towels were brought in daily as well as the other toiletries.

The main differences between the 2 types of rooms are the bed sizes and the partition of the shower and toilet (renovated double had a sliding door separating the toilet and shower). But both rooms had small windows, hair dryers, dressing mirror, 2 electric adapters, TVs, split type aircon, and "switchboard" to control the heater, a/c, and TV.

The hallway leading to the elevator of Golden Crown is quiet, safe, and well-lit unlike that of Chungking Mansion which is quite dark and abuzz with "activities". There is also a security officer 24/7 and CCTV cameras all over. It's just a bit confusing when you get to the 5th floor where the reception area is because apparently there are other guest houses in the same floor.

Others have been saying that the main appeal of Golden Crown is its location. Indeed, it is very near Exit D of TST MRT, 7-11, Mcdonalds, KFC, A21/N21 bus station and within walking distance from the TST promenade/Avenue of the Stars, Star Ferry Pier and Harbour City.

But for me, it's selling point is its value for money. It is an inn/hostel that offers around 420-470 HKD/room but you would get from it the same comfort and convenience as you would from 3-star hotels. Don't get me wrong, the rooms are very minimalist in design (that's one way of putting it) but it offers you the most that it could given the price.

Of course you want to save on the accommodations but you do not want to scrimp to the point that you would be sacrificing too much of your comfort. If you are somewhere between the extreme poles of scrimping and splurging, go for Golden Crown. Its a cheap but comfortable resting place after a tiring day of touring the city.

Room Tip: TIPS: Make sure that you ask for the "renovated" rooms when you book and ready the full pa...
