“Descent place to stay”
Reviewed 14 December 2011

Very convenient location and good rate. Should make reservation beforehand and make sure you have a good understanding of the directions about how to get there. It's located in a building with many many more businesses and hostels where you will get harassed by people trying to offer you things and hotels. Room 123 was clean and comfortable. Do not expect anything fancy. Price is really about the location. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Airport transportation is easy using public transportation. Online information.

Hong Kong is an outrageously expensive place to stay. If you don't want to pay an arm and a leg, or stay far far away from the major attractions and shopping areas you can try to find a decent room at the infamous Chungking Mansions. Granted you are paying purely for its fantastic location but it is also nice to have a clean room managed by staff who actually care about your comfort.
After scouring multiple and various traveler advisory websites we selected Apple Hostel and we came away from the experience happy and satisfied. This hostel has been in the owner's family for years so they have an interest in running the place right. The Filipino ladies in charge of the place run a tight shop and look after their guests like they are friends and relatives.
You will have to navigate through one of the scariest collections of 3rd world scammers, scalpers, hucksters and nefarious types on the ground floor to the correct elevator. Given the location, and the importance of the tourist trade to Hong Kong, the police know the Mansion very well and consequently security is pretty good; so just grit your teeth and bull your way to your elevator (make sure you take the elevators for "B" block!).. The rooms are tiny (barely larger than the bed itself) but the rate and service can't be beat.

Room Tip: Make sure you take the right elevator for Block "B".

The hostel is in Chung King Mansions, which is a great location, minutes from Victoria Harbour and the metro. This alsomeans the rooms are tiny but hey, it's Hong Kong so I don't have a problem with that. The room was tidy enough but a bit worn down, and the airconditioner broke on our second night - a no no in Hong Kong and especially in ChungKing Mansions. Wifi was supposed to work in the room but it didn't so I had to sit at the "reception" area late at night. Given that the guesthouse is frequented by guests from Africa, and I am a blond female traveller, it was not a very nice experience, put it that way. I also saw a cockroach in that area. There were none in the room, thankfully.the guesthouse was quiet at night but I wish there was a chain inside the door, it would have made me feel safer in that environment. The Philipino owners were super friendly and helpful, for which I am grateful. All in all, it was ok but a bit overpriced at $50 a night for a double room. If I were to return to ChungKing Mansions, I would stay in Apple only if Maple Leaf wasn't available.

I expected staying at Chungking Mansion to be a really crummy and dirty affair, but it was much better than I had expected. The ground floor is crowded at all times of the day, and there's always a line at the elevator lobby. However, there's a security guard at each lobby keeping things under control and the security camera feed from the elevators is screened on monitors in the lobby. Make sure to take the correct elevator to Apple Hostel (I believe it's lobby B, elevator on the left), as the elevators only run odd or even floors. Ask the security guard at the main counter where Apple Hostel's elevator lobby is, and avoid the people asking you if you need a hostel.

The rooms at Apple Hostel are expectedly small, but they are otherwise clean and the rooms are cleaned up daily. The bathroom/shower attached to our ensuite room was really small - the shower head was right above the toilet bowl. Not a big deal though. This is certainly not a room that you would want to lounge in, but you really shouldn't be doing that in an exciting place like Hong Kong! The Wifi didn't work in the rooms down the corridor but it works fine in the reception area and lounge. However, each room has a LAN port and a supplied LAN cable so you can still get internet if you're using a laptop. Apple Hostel should really fix this Wifi problem. Apple Hostel's security seems pretty good - they have cameras in all the common areas and even one outside the main door. AC worked very well in our room.

The service from the Apple Hostel staff was excellent - the front desk manager was super friendly and eager to help us with any problems we had. Sometimes he would even open the main door for us late at night because he noticed us outside in his security camera screen. "Mama" and her Filipino colleagues do a great job keeping the place clean and tidy, and they're more than willing to have a chat with you even when they're busy folding sheets. Everyone speaks good English here so it's no problem communicating.

Chungking Mansion gets really noisy in the daytime past 9am because of construction work inside and outside the building. There's some LED lighting being put up currently so the exterior is covered in green netting. If you're trying to get rest after a hard night in Lan Kwai Fong, you'll be very frustrated. But otherwise, the rooms are comfortable enough to get good rest in.

Overall, Apple Hostel in Chungking Mansion is a good place to stay for the no-frills budget traveller. But if you are willing to give up the great location in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, you might be able to find a more comfortable place elsewhere. I have no complaints about Apple Hostel, but the slow elevator situation really bugs me.

P.S. If you're changing USD to HKD, the nearby Mirador Mansion has some money changers with the best rates in town (7.77 to 7.78). Keep an eye out for cunning money changers that sneak in a 0 (7.078) hoping that you don't notice their trick.

Chungking Mansion is a really strange place with strange guys standing in the enter to the buidling. We really did not like the terrible lift - several times we had to wait more than 10 minutes as there is only one lift operating the floor where Apple Hostel is located. This lift is used for everything, incl. construction material.

Rooms are extremely small and we had one with non-fuctional AC. Windows were covered by a textile as the whole building has been renovated. Because of that, no light from outside came in the room. We also saw cockroach in the corridor.

Service is good, people there are nice, but the place is definitely very strange

Excellent location, walking distance to many sights. The staff is very generous and helpful. 'Momma' has a big heart. The bed and bath were clean . WiFi worked good. This building is a veritable United Nations housing many hostels, restaurants and shops. It's old, out dated and under construction and you may see a roach. There are only two small elevators and there's always a line so you'll have to wait. One elevator stops on even numbered floors, the other stops on odd numbered floors, be sure to get it right or you may have to use the stairs. Or worse, wait eternally while the elevator passes by your floor because it's full of boxes, cargo, and maybe people. But honestly, if you can afford it, go elsewhere.

Room Tip: Rooms fill up quickly so book early.

4 Nights and we've spend most of the time outside the room and we'd already read about the reviews both good and bad about this place so, it's better not to expect too much. There's a few things I don't like about this place are mostly about the Chunking Building, The elevator is super slow and also have to wait in line to get into it, there's a lot of Middle east and Africans which some of these people are nice but some likes to sell there stuffs which was a bit annoying. Staffs at the Apple hostel are really nice and friendly, their English is pretty well and the place is always clean, even though, the room was super small but for me cleanliness comes first.

Room Tip: I get to stay in the new phase on the same floor (not the side where the office is), it was pretty n...
