“Clean, comfortable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2012

Stayed three nights in a three bed room with two mates. Not the biggest room but enough for the three of us easily. The room also had a TV, working Air-Con, a fan, and Wi-Fi. Attached was an en-suite with shower and toilet, also small but functional. Everything was cleaned daily and clothes that were left out were nicely folded and placed back for us.

All contact with the staff was good and they spoke English. The only downside of the experience was Chungking mansions itself. It is a big building with multiple hostels and shops inside. As such many hawkers/peddlers stand outside trying to sell you watches etc. There is also only 1 elevator that goes to each floor so the wait can be a bit long at times.

Location : perfect location, you have many buses in front of the Chunking mansion ( number 21 from the airport 33HKD), 2 metro station very close ( Tsim Sha Tsui) and the ferry for central or Macau at 5 minutes!! On nathan road you also have a lot of places to eat and shop ( day and night) for every taste ( cheap or more luxury stuff)

The room : very small ( but we are in hong kong), TV, AC and Fan, Fridge, window with a view on nathan road but not noisy private toilet and shower. we stayed in a double room, if you are more than 1,80m the bed might be a little small. I was very surprised by the cleaniness of the room. They clean every day, change the towels etc.

The price : for Hong Kong and for something very clean this is very very cheap 40euros/ night for 2 people.

The guesthouse : it is very clean, the wifi works very well, you also have a computer that you can use. I saw a laundry machine I think you can use it for free but you may pay for the detergent?!

The bad thing : The guesthouse is really perfect but Chunking mansion ( the building) is not very safe. Actually we were two girls and one the indian guy ( many many in the lobby and the guesthouse trying to sell you copy bags, other guesthouse etc) followed us and wanted to come in our guesthouse to "visit" our room, we did not answer him, then politely say no, then become more assertive but he insisted and followed us to the 12th floor! We were really scared and then ring at the landlord appartement of new peking guesthouse ( same floor) , he came directly and made the guy go away !!

Recommandation : very clean, I would definitely stay there again for the cheap price and perfect location

Since 2006 I've stayed in about 8 or 9 different Guest Houses inside the Chungking Mansions. The New Peking Guest House however, is one of the better places. The Staff is friendly and very helpful, and the Rooms are pretty clean as well. Yet, the air gets kinda sticky inside there..
I can really recommend this room to people that travel alone, and want to stay in a clean space right in the heart of Hong Kong!

The room was small and cosy, surprisingly there is room cleaning every morning as well.

Provide great service. Give good advised for first time hong kong traveller

We purchased our disney and ocean theme park tickets from the owner with a discount. He even went an extra mile and delivered the tickets to us at a restaurant where we were having our breakfast dim sum

nice staff. perfectly located. quite tiny and expensive rooms, but that is what to expect from HK. beware of dodgy indian people and hawkers in the entrance. somewhat annoying elevator system. to sum it up: stay here - it is nice under the circumstances of hong kong.

I have stayed in this hostel twice, April and September 2011. Both stays are very pleasant.

Accommodation is always expensive in HK. So the rate of this hostel was reasonable, in my opinion. The room was mostly clean but it had a bit of bad smell from the toilet. It was small, but that’s common in HK. The owner was very friendly. I lost my key and he didn’t charge me for that.

Chungking Mansions is very interesting. It looks shabby but it’s indeed quite ok. There are a lot of people on the ground floor asking you to go to their hostels. Just don’t ignore them and they don’t give you any problems. There are surveillance camera in the common area and security guards, so it’s definitely safe. And more importantly it’s at the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui so it’s pretty much close to all the touristy places in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

I would recommend this hostel if you are on a budget trip to HK.

Hong Kong is a place where you can drop a lot of money on a hotel, but this little gem puts you in the middle of all the action and is really easy on your pocketbook.

Owner Peter, his wife and worker will treat you very well and they are very helpful if you need other services. Need a visa to China? Leave your passport with Peter and he'll get it for you. Having done this many times on my own, I know Peter is not making much - if any- money on this service. He has also stored my bags for several days while I made a trip to mainland china and didn't want to carry all my luggage. You really can't ask for a nicer guy. If you book your room online, you will receive an email from Peter with directions to the hotel and a guideline as to how much you should pay for a taxi from the airport. If you have a lot of luggage, spring for a taxi. If not, opt for the train to Kowloon.

Now about the rooms. They are all very small. But they are clean and comfortable with TV and AC. You can save a few dollars by opting for a room with a shared bathroom.

Personally, I go to Hong Kong to see Hong Kong....I'd rather spend my money on activities rather than on a place to sleep, so New Peking is perfect for me. I don't mind the small rooms because I'm only there to sleep and shower.

Located on Nathan Street in the heart of Kowloon, getting to and from anywhere in HK from New Peking is really easy. Buses stop in front of the hotel, the subway station is also very close by. Easily walk to the Star Ferry to get to Central. There's lots of great shopping, restaurants and bars within a radius of two blocks.

As for the building that New Peking is in, Chung King Mansion, it appears to be a bit seedy, but I have never had a problem with security there, nor have I ever felt threatened or unsafe. I find the Chung King building to be an interesting hub of activity with vendors of all sorts, great little food stalls (good Indian food!) and an overall great place just to do some people watching.
