“Shock Hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 January 2014 via mobile

Let's start with some pros: location. It is super close to Langham place (some good shopping, food, restaurants and a great outdoor bar (the backyard)) and 'action' Mongkok (Ladies market, sneaker street etc). A big however - it is within the heart of Mongkoks red light district. By all means no one will interfere or made us feel unsafe, but any male who is alone may be approached on the street like myself. Just stay clear of neon pink doorways!

As for the hotel: it is small (8sqm), but is probably hong king standard. The room was very dark in the bathroom, had stained floors and badly scuffed walls. It just needed some really good housekeeping in the hard to reach places and a new facelift. We note that it is a 'guesthouse.' There are a total of 26 rooms, with no other facilities - breakfast, gyms etc. We had terrible to no wifi at all also and contacted reception multiple times to rectify the problem with but it was no use in the end. After reading some other reviews it seems that corner rooms had terrible wifi, we were in 302...a near corner room - so try to avoid if internet is important. And the beds! Very hard and only one pillow per person so it may be very uncomfortable for some. Final nail in the coffin was the staff. They were less than enthused. Upon our arrival we were greeted by four dull faced, less than helpful staff. If you don't like interaction with hotel staff then no worries, but with some hotel facility problems we faced, it just was so difficult to get anywhere.

Ultimately, the rooms are liveable but in no means very comfortable or hospitable. There are far better value for money hotels in Hong Kong. Ps I don't even think Pop Hotel have reviewed any of their reviews on trip advisor as these complaints appear to be across the board from other trip advisor users.

First the nice things -
It is pretty conveniently located in Mongkok, around the corner from the MTR, Citibus (A21) stop and the ladies market.
The place is clean and we felt safe even when walking back late evening.
The room has a coffee tray and everything works.
The check in and check out process is quick.

The not so nice things -
The place is really really tiny. After putting in a tiny extra (almost a camping) bed in the double deluxe room we could not walk across if our suitcase was open. Even to cross each other we had to walk sideways. The place is good only if you want to dump your bags and come back only for catching up on your sleep.
The "Hotel" is infact registered as a guesthouse.
The staff are helpful, but need training on how to smile or greet customers - we could well be at a funeral from the expressions.
We had asked for a double bed however the room allocated had a twin bed. When we asked for a change we were told all doubles were sold out and there was no one to join the two beds. However when I said we cannot manage, they did send a person up to join the bed.
I had paid the full room rent (couple of thousands) in advance. However they would not part with the room key till I gave them HK$100 as a deposit. They did open the room and gave me 15 mins to get my HK currency out of my bags. Were they seriously thinking that I would let go the couple of thousand paid for the room and run away from paying a 100 bucks deposit? - not a good feeling.

Misc - there is no restaurant or room service - this was clearly told at booking stage so was expected.

I choose to stay here because it's located in Mongkok area. It's only took around 5 minutes walk to the Mongkok MTR station. The receptionist is very helpful especially when we asked about the location or the direction or the best transport to go to the place we want to.
The room is also clean and tidy. The internet connection was very fast. There's no problem to download all the apps that we need to use for 3D2N in Hong Kong.

Let me start by saying the staff were nice and tried to be very helpful. Apart from that I really regretted staying here for my two day break. I booked this because of its location in Mongkok. It's 10 mins walk to the station and easily accessible by taxi even, from Kowloon station. Good. Problem was the room next to me were occupied by smokers who'd smoke in the hallway and in their room! I tried to tell reception but they said there's nothing they can do. The walls were so thin you can hear someone gently opening cabinet doors. The place was also dusty facing streetside. My second night I think ants or bugs were biting me. I regretted scrimping and winding up in this hotel. I've no one to blame but myself this time.

The hotel stay was bad. It was so bad i checked out early. Stayed just 2 nites out of 5 to be exact.

Firstly, please do not be fooled by the seemingly nice photo of the hotel, that is unless u really do not care abt cleanliness and comfort. This hotel is relatively conveniently located in the Mongkok area. This is probably the first and last of Pop Hotel's plus point.

Secondly, the hotel is small. HK hotels are all small, so u should be mentally prepared. But this one is so small the lobby doesn't have enough space for 4 persons to stand comfortably. First nite was spent in a normal room, there was space for just 1 opened luggage. Second nite was spent in a suite. Much bigger but that is abt it.

Thirdly, the lack of cleanliness. The suite had stains on its walls. Smudges on the floor. Pillows with brown and red stains. To top it off, there was a cockroach in the room. We didn't even unpack our bags and zipped it up in the hopes that the cockroach doesn't run in.

Fourthly, the comfort level was the worst i have experienced. The shower taps to adjust the water temperature seems to be almost impossible to adjust. It was either boiling or freezing. The towel i used had a hole in it, hopefully not bitten through by the cockroach. The bed was hard as bricks and the pillows were so soft they were almost a guarantee for a neckache the next morning. There was a small sofa with leather cracks and stains, i didn't bother sitting on it. The walls are also very thin. If your neighbour watches tv late into the night, u can forget abt sleeping.

Service - the hotel is probably manned by very bored staff that don't smile.

We made a mistake by not doing our research properly and ended paying the higher rates as well. We found a much better hotel that was cheaper and cleaner eventually and decided to change hotels on the third day.

Bottomline, not recommended unless u have no choice.

Superb location in Mongkok, 5 min walk to Langham Place and thus the MTR. Aloooooot of eateries and whatsoever around the hotel. But the neighbourhood is a tad shady at night with some signs of red light district but no worries because everywhere in Mongkok is always flooded with people.

Room size is decent, can put 2 fairly large luggage with no problem. TV was small but great reception.

Wifi works okay but don't get the corner rooms like 201 or 302, they have real bad reception. Can only use the wifi at the door for 201 sadly. Otherwise speed wise was decent.

Great stay with affordable prices (Paid SGD 105 for a double bed per night)

Room Tip: Dont get corner rooms like 201 or 302 if you want good wifi.
