“No 2 placing in Tripadvisor Misleading.”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

We chose this hotel purely on the basis of its 2nd ranking on tripadvisor and it's excellent reviews. We had stayed at the the Upper House on the Hong Kong island side purely for its 1st place in tripadvisor and we couldn't fault the place as everything was to perfection. Icon was a disappointment. Considering it is classed as a luxury hotel, our experience was far from luxurious. We wanted to book a twin club suite but was turned down because of our two young children. I said they could quite comfortably share a bed but was told that the room was for a maximum of 3 people. We then took the offer of 2 adjoining rooms. Upon checkin, we immediately felt the hotel lacked 5 star quality.

The moment we walked into the first room, we detected an odour (mix of cigarette smoke and mustiness). Housecleaning sprayed something to rid the smell but was told that we were on a smoking floor so the smell is hard to eradicate. Smoking Floor???

The interior looks stylish and modern at first glance but upon closer inspection, it's actually done on the cheap. The bathroom was impractical as the toilet did not have a door and the mirrors around the bathroom gave the illusion of spaciousness but I don't think many people fancy showering with their naked reflection unless they are really confident
with their bodies!

We did have an excellent dinner at the Chinese restaurant. The food and service was very good.

Breakfast at The Market is your standard big hotel fare with nothing special about the food and service.

If you want a luxurious stay, there are far more better options so do your homework properly.

Dear Frances W,

Thank you for choosing Hotel ICON, it’s great to hear all the nice bits about your stay.

People have different perceptions of luxury and perceived value, our style appeals to a specific clientele who rate us highly but you are not one of the them.

Truly an exceptional experience. Rooms on the top floor exquisite, spacious, beautifully appointed, fully amenities. Club floors exceptional...ding on the top floor excellent. This was a terrific deal for Hong Kong.

Room Tip: go for the club plan

WOW - wish there were a chain of these, then I'd never have to search for another place to stay. Easy to get to from the airport via express train and free shuttle bus. Large super clean comfortable rooms - we were upgraded to the 26th floor with a killer view of the bay, mountain and city (and the traffic going into the tunnel!). Bottled water, mini-bar free including beer. Well-appointed bath with separate tub (that had a 2nd TV). Free cell phone to use during your stay preprogrammed with local sites and restaurants - immeasurable help - not to mention free phone calls (even international) and wifi. Liked the desk set-up with post-it notes, scotch tape, etc. so we could flag things in our tour book. (the history museum is close and well worth the visit). Can't say enough about the staff - they were all friendly and efficient and they had a great shuttle to downtown. Loved the 9th floor outdoor pool and pool service and the fitness center. Ate at Greens; good food and wonderful specialty drinks. All in all, my husband said we saved the best for last and it really made our trip.

Room Tip: Aim high and you won't be disappointed

Icon Hotel is conveniently located in the northeast of TsimShaTsui, very close to the Hong Kong train and subway system. There is a shuttle bus from the Kowloon Airport express station which makes it easy to get to and from. The staff are very friendly and motivated. They paid my taxi when I didn't have enough cash on hand. They gave me a nice room on high floor as requested. The room was well sized (for HKG standards). Nicely furnished. Interior design is very nice, particularly the bathroom is great. The minibar is free. I just wondered why they offer Beer Chang from Thailand? The free smart phone that they are providing is nothing unique. Many HKG hotels now offer this service. I didn't really use it since I have my own phone with local SIM. I just tried one overseas call but it didn't work. The restaurants are of good quality but a bit expensive. The gym and pool on the ninth floor are really nice and there is a bar service too. Apparently there is a hotel training school in the hotel which is related to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University which is just a few hundred meters away. This is actually a smart deal because it gives them access to a pool of highly motivated, young and smart staff. You can see that all around the hotel. The only two negative points were 1. There are only 4 elevators for a building with 28 floors. So waiting is the norm. 2. They didn't have a TV channel to show the World Cup games. I woke up at 3:45am to watch my team play and they said sorry they don't have this pay TV channel. I should go outside and find a pub where they show it... I would assume that a hotel of that standard should be able to afford a pay TV channel for the convenience of their guest. Other than that its highly recommended staying there should you have business on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. For tourists its also a great starting point and there is also a hotel shuttle bus to bring you to the shop till you drop destinations... But what is really unique about this hotel is that they offer you access to their Timeless lounge after you check out. This is like a small airline lounge with comfy chairs. You get drinks and snacks free as well as newspaper and wifi. Its a great way to catch up on some emails etc before heading for the airport. You can also use the gym, lockers and sauna if you wish.

Room Tip: Go for the higher floors and if you don't mind the up charge then go for the harbor view rooms.

My wife and I came to Hong Kong on the tail end of our 5-year anniversary trip, and we couldn't have picked a better hotel to wrap up our journey.

The location is perfect (with an included shuttle to the major areas nearby), the facility is beautiful (9th floor pool deck, 28th floor bar overlooking the bay), and the service was incredible.

The "club" package was worth every penny, with expansive buffet breakfast and included happy hour drinks and appetizers.

We would highly recommend the ICON, and loved Hong Kong!!

It's great to see the initiative being taken by the hotel of exactly what the customer wants and needs.
They provide a smart phone with all information you require including free internet free wifi free phone calls to specific destinations. Free mini bar.
Saying all that the beds are really comfortable with top class linen and a spacious room.
Great attitude by staff. Free shuttle service.
Why wouldn't you stay there?
They won the Trip Adviser award for 2013 and you can see why.
Eating at the hotel is not cheap but who said Hong Kong is cheap.
