“want a really bad experience? get it from this guest house”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2013

We stayed there last year (July to be exact) and it was a nightmare.
First, the building was so dingy and we were brought to another floor because the floor where we where supposed to be booked (and we booked ahead of time) was full.
We agreed, thinking it was still Carlton Guest House. It was only after we got into the small room that we realized it was an entirely different guest house! The room smelled of cockroaches, the curtain so dirty and the beddings worn out. The bathroom was old and really needing to be refurbished.
We weren't able to sleep at all that night.
WE had to complain the following day and it was only then the caretakers and helpers (MiddleEastern blacks with very strong accent) moved us to our "real" room. They were the most terrifying and terrible people I have ever come across with! They do not belong to the service industry! They even threatened us to say we can't demand for our right to be moved to a room that has long been paid for!
They should be banned from Hongkong because they really give that place a very very bad image.
The rooms where tiny like holes in the wall.
I will never ever go that place again and if you want a really terrifying experience then do book in this guest house!!!! It's like going to a horror house!!!!

Room Tip: there is no good room!!!

This place might be great for solo backpackers or a couple but not for a family of 4 or more. The place is really dense and you can barely move especially if you and your family/pals are standing all together. There are no dining spaces whatsoever and the room reek of rotten baby milk. The staff is great though and accommodating. Not as great as the budget rooms in Ho Chih Minh but I also understand that HK has a higher cost of living compared to Vietnam/Philippines. The building also looks unsafe, with shady characters roaming the ground floor at night, I recommend you to accompany your lady companions if you're a guy. I don't mind the smell of curry powder in the air, and this building looks like the little India of HK, with lots of Halal foods available. What's great about this place is the price and the accessibility to a lot of famous landmarks situated in Kowloon island. The MTR station is also nearby, and there is a shopping mall at the bldg next to it. I would recommend it if you're in a tight budget and just need a place to sleep/bathe/leave your baggage. Please don't leave anything valuable and keep your passport with you.

It probably wasn't the best ever stay that you could've hoped for, but it was much better than the other guest houses nearby. The bathroom didn't actually have a real 'shower', it only had a hose in the same 1m x 1.5m 'room'. The room we stayed in had 2 beds & a TV. The TV had only 1 English channel. The guest house was on the 16th floor of a place called 'Chung King Mansions', and although it was a bit of a regrettable experience, it is MUCH better than the guest houses on lower floors. If you are looking for a good holiday & a memorable experience (for the right reasons), then you should probably spend a few more dollars on a 4-star hotel.

Don't let the other reviews scare you off. Sure, its no five star resort but as far as budget rooms in HK go you could do a lot worse. Our room was clean, and cleaned daily. The room is tiny, actually I don't think it could be any smaller and still have a double bed in there, but that's no reason to leave a bad review - you should know that before you book it. Staff were friendly enough, Wifi was good.

Chung King is where almost all the budget guesthouses in HK are located, and its a vibrant building with many nationalities. There are lots of great food options too, and it's a great place to change your money (we were even able to exchange nepalese rupees, at near market rate!).

Carlton is located in Block C, which is seems much quieter then the others too. Every time we used the elevator blocks A & B seem to have line-ups where as we get on the Block C lift straight away. That right there is a big plus for us.

well, if some travellers could argue that it's at least good value for money, my personal experience is that you could have way better in the same area for he same price

the guest house located in a strange and noisy market.
at least one guest house per floor so this one being at the 15th one, you could easily queue at ground floor 10min to go up (one elevator)

staff is nice but room are really small (smaller than the 6m2 "standard"), old, stink and mine was without window.
And on top of that, it's not clean at all !

another thing, no electronic door or safe

well i don't recommend you this one.

Room Tip: Another guest house, probably avoid the chunk king mansion

We had stayed in guest houses from different countries and this is the worst we've ever been. The staff are rude, the lobby is dirty and the worst is the smell. The only good thing about this place is the location. It is not worth it. Better add a couple more dollars and transfer to a more decent hostel.

the hotel is cheap and room is pretty clean but thats the only good thing
room is extremely small, it is actually the smallest you could imagine since the bed is actually the room with additional small room to enter it and the small shower room
elevators are slow and shared with other guest houses on this mansion
so sometimes you need to wait in line for the elevator to come
if the guy likes you, you'll get a little bit better service
the location is very good, close to everywhere
