You can't visit Hong Kong and not take the Star Ferry to Kowloon! Gorgeous at night with views of the glittering Hong Kong skyline.

I hadn't ridden the Star Ferry for over 10 years as every time I visit HK, the piers seem to get further and further away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong and Kowloon side! But with time on my hands, made the effort to locate the Star Ferry pier on Central.

Ten years ago, it was a brisk 7-8 minute walk from the front lobby of the Mandarin Oriental hotel. This time I was dismayed to discover it entailed nearly double the time. Gone is the charming pier with rickshaws parked in front, the stalls selling hot snacks and mango ice cream past the turnstile. Instead it's been replaced by a much larger 2 storey pier with standard tourist shops and travel agent.

At least no more confusion if you need the ferry to Kowloon or Hung Hom! Still the ferries themselves and the gang plank, angle depending on the tide level, remain unchanged. BIG TIP for newbies :- the seat backs need to be flipped so that you're facing in the direction of travel.

Intriguing ride as you see the variety of vessels and remember that Victoria harbour remains a true working thoroughfare.

I used this ferry a number of times and found it to be very efficient and reasonably priced.
It has the added advantage of giving a good view of the harbour during the trip.

The star ferry a must do when in H-K. Ride a boat from the past and enjoy today's H-K skyline, also ride at night for the skyline light show. A great Historical Value in today world. A Must Do

This is rated as one of the top 50 things to do in a lifetime by National Geographic Traveler for good reason. At a few Hong Kong dollars. It was even free when I did it! For some reason it was a free day when I was here in October. I brought my folks over to HK and they loved it, a really 1930's feel, and amazing views. You can not come to Hong Kong and miss a ride on the star ferry or the cruise.
