We stayed 2 nights at Tai-O heritage hotel i october 2013. It was a little difficult to find, arriving by bus after dark, but we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived after a 15min walk from the bus station. Lovely room! And very peaceful spot. The staff were very sweet! Little details here and there give away that it´s not run by a professional 5-star chain, but that just adds to its charm - and they really are trying hard to get it all just right. we will definitely return!

We wonder which is worst: the place hard to reach, the menu (toast or hot dogs!!) or the appalling and unpleasant service in a island where the common people are so eager to please, certainly not to the standard of Hong Kong. However they don't miss to charge you exorbitant prices. Fortunately we did not spend the night there.

It was a mistake! We spent one night there. The receptionist was utterly unfriendly when we checked in. The restaurant supplies only airline (economy class) type food. Even at that level, many items on the menu were not available and substituted with even more inferior food.

We felt like living in a zoo surrounded by tourists peeking around. We had to keep the curtain down and room was dark like a cave. Garbage smell was around the restaurant seating area and kitchen, cleaning mess is everywhere that you can not avoid seeing.

Whatever was included in package was a joke. So, all I can say is "be aware!". It's a hotel that looks good on the website but does not live up to the basic standard.

The isolation of this hotel is its great selling point It is certainly quiet once the day trippers have left. But the rooms though well appointed and comfortable are dark and windowless. But as far as we could ascertain the village lacks a quality restaurant and the one at the hotel is essentially a museum cafe for the day trippers. if this place is going to get on the map it needs to really invest in the food side and to find a better way of allowing museum visitors to see the building without the paying guests feeling that they are part of the exhibition.

We had a real problem with this hotel, and find it difficult to know whether to recommend it or not. We were very happy to support a local scheme to preserve old buildings, provide local training and employment opportunities and the local economy by using food supplied by nearby farmers. In fact we try to do this where ever we travel. However we felt we were being taken advantage of here, For the price we expected more. It does not help the locality to accept a standard that would not be acceptable elsewhere for that price. We had read the reviews so booked an upstairs room to avoid the trippers. What the hotel has now done is blank out all the windows to avoid the peerers so now there is no view at all from your room and you do indeed feel as if you are in a police cell. So ignore all those lovely photos on the website with day light flooding in. As far as we could see the only room this does not effect is the room upstairs above the reception which has windows facing the sea.? Tiger Lily. So despite the very comfortable bed with first class linen and great style we felt trapped and claustrophobic. Why on earth they didn't use louvered blinds I do not know.
The food in the restaurant was woeful, dull, uninspired and overpriced. We were there 3 nights and the set menu did not change, also some items remained 'off' 2 days running, including brown bread at breakfast. In an area with some of the best restaurants in the world this is shameful.
We were in Lantau for R and R break prior to returning to a cold Europe after travelling for 5 weeks across Russia and China and wanted to hike. ( we know the rest of HK quite well) The staff had no info on this or a decent map, bus timetable, info on beaches The books available were inadequate.
There was no opportunity to feed back our impressions whilst there, and the website did not allow more than a few words. My guess is that with only 9 rooms and a vast possible catchment that the hotel will not worry too much about our view, but what a missed opportunity, as a boutique hotel in such a place has long been needed.

Room Tip: Upstairs above the reception, as only one with non blocked out windows

Ex marine police station revitalised into a nice boutique hotel. Only 9 rooms available. Stayed at The Commissioner suite located right next to the reception. Huge living room, bedroom and 2 bathrooms. Booked the sunset boat tour package, and the hotel staff Joey Chan gave us very informative hotel and boat tour around the Tai O fishing village. Our Nespresso machine and the TV in bedroom had a little problem, the staffs were very helpful and replaced/fixed the problem very quickly. There is a new pier right next to the hotel and it's the perfect spot for looking at the beautiful sunset. This is a boutique hotel and running as a self sustained NGO, not a 5-star hotel so please set your expectation at the right level. Rooms for improvement: the food of our set menu wasn't amazing, presentation of our Main dishes were poor. But, the friendly staffs and the beautiful views, nice rooms, and the beautiful fishing village nearby makes this hotel a nice hideaway in HK. Better book the rooms on the first floor if possible.

Room Tip: Pick rooms on the first floor.

This is the place for lunch in Tai O. It is along the coast and on the shore - beautiful setting and away from the very strong smell of shrimp and drying fish which permeates the village.

Mixed menu of Asian and Western dishes. Our Singapore curried veg and rice was delicious.
