“just what i wanted”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

Close to trains, shops, the harbour , and everywhere. the concierges were professional and fluent in english, the rooms were neat and tidy - though i struggled to settle on the best temperature for the room - I'm not accustomed t using the heating. the queue at the breakfast rooms could be managed better, it meanders into the lift ques and feels chaotic- but moves quickly and the breakfast was a delightful range of eastern and western tidbits. great fiew, too!

Room Tip: nice views the higher you go

This hotel has its own laundry service on site so you can use the washer/dryer and ironing board. The hotel is very average and affordable but not very clean. Our bathroom door doubled as the shower door and was full of hair all over the shower. But I guess you use the Holiday Inn Express for its affordability and not really for the luxury of it. It was centrally located with a short walk to the subway and a couple of markets up the street. Lots of street food near by and if you are going to travel via boat, the river doc is right down the street.

Hotel is ok… Reception is small, room is small, bathroom is small and breakfast room is small… But location is good and price is very affordable, so I would go there again.
Room is silent and clean and I had a nice view to the mountains so overall no complaints. And the location was good, metro station was close and there where many good restaurants nearby. Also (some of) the main attractions were in walking distance.

Since its located near Central, the room size was extremely small. The bathroom can't get smaller than this! Breakfast was as usual like other hotels. Nothing specific.

The main reason for booking this hotel was Self Laundry. You can pay 30HKD and do self laundry. It was welcome relief for me, where I was struggling to do laundry in Macau for a month. Hotel laundry is very expensive. So when i visited HongKong for a weekend, I washed 1month clothes at one shot! Believe me. Self Laundry was very helpful.

I stayed here for three nights in early August on business in Hong Kong and chose this hotel instead of my other preference in the area of the Ibis nearby so that I could consider the difference. In the main, I think the rooms at the Ibis are rather brighter and fresher - wooden flooring helps - whilst they felt a little larger too than the Holiday Inn Express. The free breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express is certainly nothing special at all and does seem to have more dishes oriented towards Chinese customers than western customers, but observing the majority of the hotel guests whilst I was there I would have to acknowledge that Chinese (from the mainland based on their accents) were by far the majority of those at breakfast and in the hotel in general, so perhaps it is not unreasonable for the hotel to cater more for their main guest profile preferences.

Location is slightly closer to the MTR (Exit A2 is closest) than the Ibis and this can be helpful for using the MTR for business connections on the Island and over to Kowloon, as you don't have far to walk (just a couple of blocks) - you can also get a tram from slightly further away than the MTR. The staff were varied in their responses to questions and one or two of the female reception staff were rather dismissive of questions and less than helpful at times, although not unfriendly. During my stay one of the male reception staff stood out as being much more helpful than others (see below about getitng taxis) but I think it is always important to remember that this is only a 3 * hotel and not the Mandarin Oriental and I do try to adjust my service expectations accordingly. This hotel (like the Ibis) is one of the stops on the airport express free shuttle bus but may be useful to note that this stop is not within the hotel entrance area but on a street around the corner where you have to hail the bus as it passes if going to the airport or get off and walk back to the hotel if coming from the airport. This is OK if arriving on a cool and dry evening with reasonable amounts of luggage, but not fun at all if you are having to wait on the street up to 20 minutes in either humid heat or pouring rain (both of which are frequent in Hong Kong!). The Ibis shuttle bus stop is covered and is part of the entrance area to the hotel which is more convenient. When I checked out and asked for a taxi to the Hong Kong Airport Express station, as I had lots of luggage and the weather was not great, one of the (male) reception staff did a great job of finding a taxi for me and ensuring that my luggage was loaded up safely - for this effort I was very grateful to him as finding taxis can be difficult at certain times of the day.

Overall, this hotel is fine - nothing special but good value and well located. There are some decent eateries just nearby and the hotel offers some discounts for guests at some of these - the Cottage GastroPub is very good. Would I stay here at the Holiday Inn Express again? Yes, I would, but I would also always consider the Ibis around the corner and stay there if there was a matching or better price on offer.

Room Tip: Get a high room if you can as these are quieter. The "harbour view" is nothing special so...
