“Far away from airport and Kowloon”
Reviewed 11 December 2013 via mobile

If you need to be in this area for a specific reason, the hotel is great. New, modern, spotlessly clean, good bed, spacious bathroom, fantastic service. Very reasonably priced, but you are off the beaten track. Taxi to and from the airport w/o traffic almost 1 hour, train to Kowloon requires a few train changes. Club lounge is great, on top floor with nice views. Breakfast good variety. No upgrade despite IHG platinum but a bottle of wine and some fruit on the last day. An alternative to expensive Kowloon hotel rooms is Shatin which has a straight train line running to Kowloon.

This newly opened, modern, comfortable, and friendly hotel is located far off the beaten path, a good distance from most of the business and tourist attractions that you may want to visit in this vibrant, spread-out city. But the location should not be a deterrent for travelers to Hong Kong, because convenient access to the entire area is very close at hand. The Crowne Plaza Kowloon East is actually quite well situated for anyone willing to use the city’s speedy, efficient Mass Transit Railway (MTR). The hotel’s front door is only a few short steps away from the Tseung Kwan O MTR station, which has an entrance just inside the adjacent upscale indoor shopping mall. A half-hour train ride (typically requiring one connection) takes you to the Central (business and financial district) near Hong Kong Park and Victoria Peak, the shopping areas of Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui, among others, the ferry to Macau, the Disneyland Resort station (three connections), and just about anywhere else you may wish to go in the area. You can purchase a tourist day pass at any MTR station -- good for 24 hours of unlimited travel -- which makes it easy and inexpensive to get around without bothering with the fare machines each time you board. Alternatively, the ubiquitous Urban Red taxis are usually lined up right outside the hotel, charging regulated meter rates.

Location aside, everything is up to date and welcoming at the Crowne Plaza Kowloon East. Arriving guests are greeted by a cheerful, efficient front desk staff and escorted to their room by a helpful bellhop who is quite happy to explain its features. The hotel offers a large, attractive lobby, where you can relax and enjoy free wi-fi, and if you are an IHG hotels club member (if not, sign up at the front desk), you’ll get a free drink there during your stay.

My room on a high floor was quite large for a Hong Kong hotel and was beautifully laid out, including the furnishings and wall decorations, with a good view of the surrounding area. The room offered a number of convenient features, including a personal safe in large drawer beside the bed. You program it once with a 4-digit code and then just enter that code to open or press “lock” to close securely without reentering the code. Lighting and temperature control in the room were quite good, operated by a set of remote switches at the door or by other sets of switches adjacent to the bed. Only the lamps on the wall at either side of the bed required hands-on operation, using an on-off switch on the underside of the lamp base. There were three telephones in the room -- one next to the bed, one at the desk, and one in the bathroom. Everything worked perfectly.

The bathroom was organized into a sink/bathtub area and separate shower and toilet compartments. Amenities placed near the sink included soap, toothbrushes, shower cap, washcloths, hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, and even liquid body soap for the bathtub or shower. The shower stall was nicely set up, with the main shower controlled by one knob for force and one for water temperature, and you also have the choice of using a separate hand-held spray. The shower stall had a retractable clothesline, with the end receptacles placed diagonally across the compartment to maximize its usable length. The stopper in the bathroom sink had two preset positions -- open and closed (press it down to switch between them). The stopper closed tightly, so the sink could be used for hand laundry and seemed to be reasonably safe for rinsing contact lenses if handled with caution.

Other features in the hotel room included a range of coffee and tea fixings, robe and slippers, a fridge / minibar with ample room for personal items, and several electrical outlets along with a plug converter that should accommodate most European and North American devices. Complimentary apples had been placed in my room before arrival, along with two fresh bottles of water. A free copy of the South China Post was delivered to my door each morning. The flat panel TV offered a large number of channels with several in English, including Bloomberg TV, BBC, CNN, ESPN, and HBO.

The housekeeping staff was responsive to door-card requests for early maid service and performed a thorough job of cleaning, with used bathroom amenities and empty complimentary water bottles replaced each day.

The hotel breakfast -- served from 6 to 10:30 a.m. -- was exceptional, offering an ample selection of hot and cold items including made-to-order omelets. The serving staff was attentive and efficient.

There wasn’t much to criticize during my stay at this excellent hotel. If the somewhat remote location was a negative feature for some guests, it was offset -- at least for me -- by the positive feature of its close proximity to the MTR and to the large Popcorn shopping mall. Other than that, I would have liked a bit more drawer space in the room, and the cold water from the faucet in the bathroom sink never got very cold. But the hot water came up fairly quickly, day or night. More disappointing was the lack of free in-room wi-fi except for elite-level IHG members, although I was told that in-room wi-fi would become free for non-elite IHG members in 2014 but probably not for all guests. In any event, the wi-fi signal in the front lobby was free to all and quite strong. To avoid being hassled to order food or drink while using it in the front lobby, head for the comfortable seating in the nearby tour waiting area to access the free wi-fi signal with your tablet or laptop -- just turn right coming out of the elevator bank.

The concierge desk was helpful and knowledgeable during the times when it was staffed by an experienced senior concierge, but one was not always on duty. However, someone was always there to help with simple requests for transportation and maps. There is no regular airport shuttle service between the hotel and Hong Kong International Airport, so your best inexpensive alternative is a metered Urban Red taxi, which should cost around HK$350, or US$45, for the 45 km drive from Tseung Kwan O across Kowloon and Lantau Island to the airport. Taxis are usually lined up outside the hotel, or you can ask the concierge to reserve one in advance.

Overall , I found the new and sparkling Crowne Plaza Kowloon East to be a superior hotel and a great place to stay compared with older, more-centrally located hotels I have used in Hong Kong in the past. So far from the madding crowd and so near to shopping and transit, it’s definitely where I will stay on my next visit to the Pearl of the Orient.

Room Tip: Good views from the upper floors

Hotel is just above the MTR station which is very convenient. Room size is perfect for Hong Kong area. Staff are professional and efficient. There is an electrical adaptor in the room. Breakfast has a wide range of choices. What I like the most are the room size and the bed. Bed is so comfortable. This hotel is about 30 minutes by taxi and without traffic from the airport. We were charged an extra 86.00 Hong Kong dollars for the airport tax from the hotel to the airport. We did not know if airport tax is included in the taxi meter or not but next time we will ask the taxi driver before to jump in.

Room Tip: On the highest level

It is one of the better hotels I've stayed in Hongkong. The room is spacious and comfortable. It is connected to a mall and mtr so it is pretty convenient to get around. However, it is quite a distance from the main shopping area via the mtr.

I have stayed here a few times now, the first time, nearly 12 months ago and I must say I was very impresses with the hotel. I had a corner room and it was as good as the first time. Again, I have to say, the location is quiet poor, it is around 30 mins to Temple St Market by MTR, 25 mins to Causeway Bay and Times Square. Trains can get quiet packed sometimes, especially in the morning. This is not very convenient, especially if you travel for work and are on a tight schedule...but...value for money was top notch, the room was spacious and very clean and the hotel staff (front desk, house keeping, etc) very attentive and friendly. The bed, the pillows and the whole layout was actually really good. The photos on here are really representative of the hotel.

There is a large shopping centre next door that spans 3 buildings, there is a fully stocked supermarket to the left of the hotel and plenty of restaurants and fast food outlets including the standard Starbucks and McDonalds plus Thai, pizza restaurant which delivers at no charge plus much more. The shopping centre is OK, you should be able to find everything there, from bakeries and groceries through clothes to electronics.

Would I stay here again? Definietly if budget is an issue, value for money is really good. I have stayed in a number of hotels around HK more, I tend to visit the same ones over and over again and this one is really good....but the location is a problem. Only stay here if you are not pressed for time and constantly chased by work appointments. If I was travelling for leisure I will definitely pick this hotel as the first choice. The money saved on room rates versus city hotel is money you can use for attractions and shopping...

Room Tip: Take the corner rooom, it is almost like a self contained apartment. The hotel does offer discounts...

As always, IHG hotels never disappoint me. This time I made good choice to stay at the Crowne Plaza in Kowloon East instead of in Causeway Bay. It is inside the Popcorn Mall, just right on top of the MTR station. Very convenient in terms of transportation, and yet away from the crowds in the shopping districts. The room is a bit small (maybe because mine is a corner room?) compared to the room at the Crowne Plaza in Causeway Bay. Pleasantly surprised to see a complimentary bottle of red wine when I came back from dinner.

Room Tip: Corner room seems a bit small

I was pleasantly surprised of the room spaciousness and quality (and this is in HK!). This compares very favorably with other 5 stars hotels I have stayed before.(which are plenty). Yet the price is very reasonable.

Of course, it is a little far off from the Central, but it is adjacent to a very modern shopping mall (where food variety is plentiful) and the subway is just a few more steps beyond. Once on the subway, your travel time is very predictable with the efficient MTR, even if it takes you a few more minutes to go into the city.

The club lounge is small but the staff offers guest to use the restaurant space (essentially shared). Afternoon tea and cocktail offering are fine.

Internet is stable even for a 4 hour web meeting.
