The inspiring Travelling Gourmet stays in the JW Marriott hotel in Hong Kong. Nicely located in Pacific Place just a hop and a skip from Pacific Place shopping center, this hotel is primarily a businessman's hotel. The rooms are nice but rather small, and you also get push buttons beside the bed to open and close the curtains just like the Island Shangri-La hotel next door. I like this feature a lot...very James Bond, Ha! Ha! The mattress of the bed was a bit too soft for my taste. I like a firm mattress for more back support when sleeping. There was also no pillow menu. It was foam or feather pillows only, no buckwheat pillows.
The Gym and Health Club with Sauna and Steam Room is well equipped but I dislike the almost daily signs proclaiming: "The Pool is closed today due the Thunderstorm warning!" What the hell! I love to swim and exercise everyday and I was unable to swim for most of my stay! From my room on a high floor, namely the 16th floor I could see the pool of the next door Conrad hotel and SUPRISE SUPRISE! The guests in the Conrad were swimming madly lap after lap while the J W Marriott pool was CLOSED! Absolutely ABSURD! I asked the staff who gave me a standard reply: "It is hotel policy" Well, respectfully, I think the policy is very asinine.
I like the Flint restaurant with its so-called 'industrial chic' decor and wooden tables and wood slatted floors. Great SAS - steaks and scallops! Very YUMMIE! The Classic Caesar Salad with big crisp leaves of Romaine is very good too! I found out that Flint restaurant just opened in Sep 2013. Somehow it reminded me of that classic tongue in cheek classic movie starring James Coburn as muliti-lingual Karate expert and super-spy "Our Man Flint"...
I wanted to try the Chinese Dim Sum in the hotel's Man Ho restaurant one day, but was told it was fully booked. I was mis-informed just like Humphrey Bogart in the 1942 movie "Casablanca"...because when I went to take a look at the Man Ho restaurant, it was not full at all! I hate people who give me unreliable information. I decided instead to try the Chinese Dim Sum in the Golden Leaf restaurant. It was nice with 24 karat gold leaf on top of the Har Kow prawn dumplings. C'est la vie et c'est le monde... :-) Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling GourmetTM is a celebrated Travel, Food and Wine Writer/Editor.
