“The best hotel in the world”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2014

OK, I haven't been to every hotel in the world (yet), but I've been to quite a few and the Mandarin is the one to which I dream of returning. Aside from the terrific location, the gorgeous public spaces and rooms and the fantastic restaurants, what keeps me coming back here is the service. Quite simply, the Mandarin has the finest service of any hotel in my experience (and there is some stiff competition among the five-star hotels in Asia).

I've come to the Mandarin on business, and with the family for holidays, and the experience has never been less than memorable. Worth every penny of what you pay for the room. Don't miss it.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the Ice House Street side of the hotel, which have no view. All other views are quit...

An outstanding hotel with service to match. Unpretentiously one of the best hotels in the world. The hotel was refurbed 3 years ago and still has that new feeling. Located in central district only a few yards from the mtr and an easy walk to the ferries. A captains bar where deals of old Hong Kong were reached in the past. A trendy cocktail bar on the top floor, with great views of the city skyline.

Beautiful view over harbour, great breakfast buffet and a lovely room. Nice little evening surprises. Asked for smoker and it really smelled like a smokers den. In times of Febreze this should not happen. Room service was sometimes not up to scratch but that might have been related to the bank holidays. Unfortunately not all breakfast option have been open so we were limited to the buffet. The negative highlight though was that I asked the receptionist if I could enter the captains bar with shorts and he said yes. The moment I walked in he ran after me and told me I could not get in with short !!??!! I also can not understand how some large Hotels still charge for WIFI. Management should finally see this as a service rather than an extra service. All in all a pleasant stay, as usual for a Mandarin, this one though shows some signs of age although there was a renovation.

Room Tip: If you ask for a smoker room better first ask to "smell" it !

Hotel is very centrally located and that is a big plus. Many places easy to walk to. For a business traveller who has some leisure time as well this is a perfect location.

Check in / check out was efficient though the timing and service was not great - this hotel runs very busy and so don't count on early check in or late check out - the staff is quite militant about the timings. Found this a little strange since most hotels are able to accommodate these requests. I had to speak to the manager to get 1.5 hours extra before the prescribed checkout time of 2pm. When i checked in though room was not available till 4pm.

Rooms are spacious with large king bed, desk, TV and plenty of closets as well as large bathroom with separate areas for each of shower, tub, toilet, sink etc. Spacious feel, good lighting, plenty of drinking water bottles in the room and frequent refresh service.

The building is right in the middle of the city and so there are no views - in fact it is so close to the neighboring building that it was not possible to open the drapes. That made the room feel dark even during the day - didn't like that.

Breakfast spread is quite extensive and has some items that change everyday which is always nice for guests who stay for more than a couple of days. Service is efficient. Space for sitting is cramped - would be great to have more space in this area.

Lobby is beautiful and spacious. Decorated in classic Chinese style.

The cake shop is absolutely wonderful and makes this is a destination in itself. You must try the desserts and cakes.

Rooftop bar is nice though somewhat over rated. Again space is limited and views are good but not spectacular. Drinks list is limited and post dinner dessert menu is also limited.

Gym is 24 hours - large and spacious and not very crowded. Did not get to try the spa - in Hong Kong most of the spa services are available at other excellent locations for half the price.

The driveway in front of the hotel is very small - no place for cars to wait. So if you have a car dropping you off or picking you up - make it precise - no time to dawdle.

Overall recommend this hotel for the location and the cake shop. If location is not a key driver then would choose some place with better views and less traffic.

Room Tip: Room which does not directly look into another building - so that you can open the drapes.

This place really is top quality. In my view one of the best hotels in the world anywhere. Period. Service is second to none. Rooms are beautifully decorated. Fantastic shower. Great bed and furniture. Great choice of bars and restaurants. Captain's bar is an institution. 50 years old and going strong!

Compared to many other similar star rated hotels, the Mandarin Oriental is in my view truely outstanding. At first, everything is what you expect for this level, efficient check-in, clean and spacious room, etc.
But it is the small things that make the difference. Attention to details in the room, welcome tea, ...
And especially the very professional and kind staff, who helped us several times perfectly and quickly at concierge and eg after the first day, greeted us by name at breakfast. This is in my view, what makes an excellent hotel a perfect one.

I have stayed at this property a few times and the attention to detail is flawless! I love the more modern rooms with the window seat and lighter colors. The concierge staff is amazing and extremely helpful. The mandarin Grill is truly one of the best restaurant in Hong Kong. Innovative food and great service. The location is wonderful as a few minute walk to the star ferry and the MTR is right outside the back door of the hotel. If you don't have lots of luggage like I did you can take the airport express direct to the airport. The location in central is so much more relaxing than the congestion of Kowloon. The pa could be freshened up a bit but the treatments are on point.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbor view even partial is amazing.
