“Such a pity - Beware : P.P.Policy in Operation !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2014

Such a pity for such a super hotel, for which one pays real Top $, that there is a "Penny Pinching Policy" in operation.

I stayed in the Mandarin for 5 days in May .......everything you'd expect from a World Class 5* hotel with a great reputation.

However the whole experience was spoilt by the fact that one has to pay for the internet - would you believe it .......in a 5 star + hotel ! The charge was not high, but that's not the point,.The fact that as a well paying guest, you have to pay to use their Internet. I call this "Penny Pinching" which for such an hotel, utterly incomprehensible.

The General Manager gave me a "hog-wash" of a reply when I wrote about my feelings. ( hi tech Internet speeds etc. . .....can have up to 6 electronic devises connected at the same time, etc. etc.)....... completely besides the point !

The best for their global reputation ( Corporate Head Office please note) is to offer Internet included in their room rates ( as do their biggest competitors in Hong Kong ) as part of the normal service of a first class hotel.

Shame on them !! I hope they think again and reverse their PPP !!

Absolute delight from the treatment at the front desk to toiletries in the room, the surprise every night, the eye mask, pillow spray (a fave), room spray, jet lag balm. My room a king bed had a fabulous bath shower. Great place to relax. The steamroom sauna, pool, spa on the roof a delight. Staff could not any nicer. Highly recommended. To make it better it is a convenient local in Central.

The MO has long been a favourite, for corporate trips and more and more for personal trips. We have seen several upgrades of the rooms over the years, but the most recent a couple of years ago, covering the blaconies and extending the rooms has been the best.

As a frequent corporate traveller, I can say with honesty, that when you enter the MO rooms, they are exceptional, with bathrooms only slightly smaller than the bedrooms; themselves already a good size. Add to this the excellent service that the MO is renowned for world-wide and the almost perfect location in Central, this hotel is very hard to beat at any level. Prices are reasonable / on a par with other 5*s (not peers) in close proximity.

Cafe Causette is the perfect place to meet and great for a light breakfast, where you will find more locals than tourists - get a place at the breakfast bar if you can. The Mandarin Grill is on a par with some of the best restaurants in the world. There is nothing to fault with this hotel, other than them not having a loyalty programme, that I have been looking out for, for many years ...

Room Tip: Deluxe Rooms are already quite spectacular; the Junior Suites are amazing

I stayed at this hotel for 6 nights with my elderly mother, in separate rooms. The rooms were on the same floor close to each other on a high level as requested in our booking. Both rooms were very well appointed although had very different configurations. One was more suited to a business traveller with a large desk whilst the other was more suited to a holiday traveller with a smaller desk and a small couch. As many other reviewers have noted the service is marvellous and the staff are very well trained, professional and very pleasant to deal with. A couple of inquiries required further investigation by the staff and they always got back to us as promised with the information requested. Great location close to metro station, the wonderful Star Ferry and many malls and shops. Very wide choice of restaurants in the hotel with the room service kitchen willing to accommodate food preferences, if possible. All in all a great hotel which rises to my top HK pick due to the marvellous staff.

This hotel sets a high bar for service and ambience. Rooms are spacious and well appointed with sweeping views. Staff anticipates your every need. When we asked for ice the first evening, a staff member appeared bearing ice at the same time thereafter.

This hotel would get a perfect 10 if it was not for the noisey air conditioning. We stayed in the Oriental Suite and the service included meet and greet at the airport with baggage collection and seeing us to our car (costs extra but worth it!). Also breakfast was included at both the buffet or the a la carte restaurants.
As I have said everything was perfect except for the noisey bloody air conditioning.

Room Tip: A harbour view room is a must. Better still try the Oriental Suite

We have stayed dozens of times at this beautiful hotel and the service is absolutely impeccable. We stayed for the first time with our baby last month and were bowled over by the extra service we received and the care the hotel took to look after us and our son.

All the restaurants are stunning, particularly the Grill and the breakfast buffet. The spa is fabulous, and the hair salon is faultless as well.

We will always come back to the Mandarin - why would we stay anywhere else?
