Excellent hotel to stay in, the service was friendly and the rooms are nice and clean. Breakfast on the top floor was great too. You might need a taxi to get anywhere as its a bit out, but the ride is cheap.

ISLHK, General Manager at Island Shangri-La Hong Kong, responded to this reviewResponded 29 June 2014

Dear Ziad K,

Thank you for having taken the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted to know that you find our service friendly and that you have enjoyed the breakfast at our Horizon Lounge. Further to your comment on having to take a taxi to get anywhere, we would like recommend public transportation such as the MTR which can be conveniently accessed through Pacific Place, as well as public bus and tram nearby. Our concierge will be more than happy to guide you on your next visit.

It is indeed our pleasure to take care of you and we look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel soon.

Best regards,
Franz Donhauser
General Manager

I made a short business trip to Hong Kong 2 weeks ago, and stayed at Island Shangri-la Hong Kong. After a long and tiring Trans Pacific flight, being warmly welcomed by the hotel's guest reception officer was a pleasant event. I was even upgraded to bay view room! The suite was superbly done, and the view simply breathtaking! Had a wonderful buffet breakfast at the coffee shop. Too bad it was only a short trip, but I will definitely come back again to Island Shangri-la.

Room Tip: Whenever possible ask for a bay view room!

The irrepressible Travelling Gourmet travels to the "Fragrant Harbour" and experiences the Island Shangri-La...
MANY hotels and resorts have impressed me on my gastronomic travels around the world...the island Shangri-La in Hong Kong is one of them. Hong Kong translates as "Fragrant Harbour" and has many Michelin Star restuarants like Petrus and Summer Palace in this hotel. I tried them both and I was favourably impressed. Decor, service, food and wines were exemplary. I liked the pool and spa a lot too. I worked out in the Gym and swam in the pool every day as is my routine. i have too to stay fit and not get fat! My accommodation was very comfortable and every morning, just a touch of the button opened the curtains to reveal a breathtaking view of the Harbour. Very James Bondish! I like the pillow menu from which I selected Buckwheat Husk pillows. Aaah...I slept like a happy babay every night of my stay! The hotel is in the Pacific Plaza mega shopping center so it is very convenient to go shopping or to try restaurants and cafes in Pacific PLace.I especially like GrEAT Food Hall, a very upmarket gourmet supermart with everything a gourmet desires...I like too the Lobster Bar and Grill with blond and beautiful French Canadian Sophye Richard singing "Je ne regrette rien" and "la vie en rose", melodiously backed by a 3 piece band...while you savour Bostob Lobster flavoured with white wine and herbs. ENJOY! Dr. Michael Lim is the Travelling Gormet, a renowned Travel, Food and Wine Writer/Editor :-)

The hotel is classy and staff is very warm and polite. We booked the room for anniversary, the hotel staff prepared surprise gifts to us and my wife felt very happy for the arrangement!

Had a great stay in HK Island.

I stayed at the Island Shangri-la for 2 months and could not recommend a better hotel in Hong Kong. I also stayed at the Grand Hyatt for a month separately.

Pros
- Amazing staff - they remember your special preferences and really go out of their way to make your stay convenient e.g. they prepared cut mangoes and blueberries every morning for me for breakfast and had it ready by the time I arrived. Even the general manager, Mr. Donhauser is very approachable and goes out of his way to personally make your stay comfortable
- Large rooms with amazing views of either the Harbour or the Peak. Harbour View rooms are larger
- Great room amenities - they have a valet stand and proper shoe rack in the closet that allows your leather soles to air
- Top notch sport facilities - pool has a lane for swimming laps and also closes late. I'm a swimmer and this was important. Grand Hyatt pool was much longer but wasn't straight and it closed at sunset. The gym facilities are equivalent to an outside gym. They even had a spinner bike
- Convenient location next to Admiralty with access to the MTR, tram, buses etc.
- Luxurious lounge at the top with amazing views. Breakfast in the lounge is really good and you get to order hot dishes. There's also a good selection of snacks and alcohol for evening drinks
- High quality food and beverage options with the abundance of restaurants in the hotel

Cons
- There were often long lines or waiting times for taxis, which were quite frustrating when you wanted to get somewhere quickly
- Room is getting a little dated - so the position of sockets is often inconvenient i.e. not next to the bed. I understand some renovations are in the plans though

Room Tip: Get the Harbour View and Horizon Club rooms if you can as it makes a huge difference with lounge acc...

Overall excellent experience at ISL Hotel. I have stayed here several times before and continue to be amazed. Only downside is the wait time for elevators. Rooms are comfortable and clean. Gym is better than most. Horizon Club is a great escape every morning and evening for breakfast and then cocktails with friends. Restaurants are top notch, every meal is excellent. Finally, the staff was there for me whenever I needed something.

Room Tip: Overlooking Victoria Harbor. It's amazing.
