Kowloon Shangri-La Hong Kong

I have just returned from staying at the Kowloon Shangri-La with my mother, sister and her three young children. We spent an exceptionally comfortable 8 nights in interconnecting 'Deluxe Harbour View' rooms on the 14th floor. The hotel caters extremely well for children, on arrival they were greeted with coloured pencils and pads, and in the room were freshly baked cookies and milk, as well as mini slippers and robes!

I was too early to check in and was given complimentary cocktail vouchers to enjoy in the lobby lounge. I also experienced the afternoon tea here which was generous and delicious.

The location is great, coming from the airport, you take the Airport Express train and get off at Kowloon, hop on the complimentary K3 bus which drops you off at the Shangri-La - the hotel is the last stop on the route, so if you're tired (or you arrive late at night - the bus stops running at 11pm) and want to get straight to the hotel, I'd advice a $50 taxi. The East Tsim Sha Tsui MTR is below the hotel, it is also a short walk to the main Tsim Sha Tsui line, Nathan Road etc. There is a small 7-eleven shop right next door to the hotel should you need drinks, milk etc.

The rooms we had were spacious and the beds exceptionally comfortable, it is well worth splurging and opting for a harbour view room if you can - from here (at a slight angle) you can see the 8pm light show in the evening. The bathroom was a good size with a large walk in shower and a medium size bath with lots of amenities.

Take the lift to level 'M' (by Kafe Kool) and this connects you to a walkway which takes you over the busy road and down onto the Avenue of the Stars, you can walk along the waterfront all the way to the Star Ferry. It takes about 10 minutes (depending on how many times you stop to take photos!) This is also a 1.2km jogging route from the hotel to the clock tower.

The 24hr gym is very well equipped but compact, the pool is also on the small side, but was fine for the children to splash around in. There was a jacuzzi to the side of the pool, and In the changing rooms are sauna and steam rooms and relaxation chairs which are all immaculately kept. The staff were very helpful and attentive.

We had all our breakfasts at Kafe Kool and I'd have to say this was definitely a highlight of our stay! It is more of a buffet brunch, a vast eclectic array of really delicious food. From the freshest fruit, juices, cereals, freshly made eggs any style, bacon, hash browns to noodles, rice, curries, dim sum, salmon, salads, cheese, danish pastries, freshly made pancakes and waffles... I've experienced a few hotel breakfasts and I'd say this topped the lot (with bells on!). The staff were initially not very attentive, but by the end of our stay it had improved a great deal, a particular mention and thank you to Jacky who was great!

Overall we had a great stay here, the service was very good and the sleep quality great - any small niggles (rudely awoken once at 3.30am by some loud music coming from the speakers in the bathroom, a technical fault) were dealt with immediately.

Hong Kong is a small place, and to be honest you could stay anywhere and be within easy reach of most places. It was the little touches combined with the views that made this stay highly memorable.

Room Tip: Splurge and book a harbour view room!

Exceptional service, superbly helpful staff, very good food in Cantonese restaurant, plentiful breakfast buffet.

Thoroughly recommend staying here (unless you'd prefer HK island, however the HK island shangri-la was 2x the price for the same 2 nights!)

We stayed 4 nights in an excellent room on the 28th floor, with a view of the city & a side view of the harbor. We can not say enough wonderful things about this hotel. We had delicious breakfast every morning, and wine & dessert in the evening in the Horizon Club. The service was impecable, all the staff was extremely helpful, the hotel is beautiful, and in a great location.

Just returned from 4 nights at this hotel. Had a room on the Horizon Club floor (we were on the 21st) which was excellent. Took a normal deluxe room rather than a harbour view, but as it turned out we had a side harbour view anyway. Easy access from the airport via the train and a taxi and greeted on arrival and escorted to the Horizon Club check in on the 20th floor. Worth the extra for the extra benefits, although the 6-8pm happy hour seems very popular with people heading up there just after 5.30pm to grab the tables by the windows. Not an issue if you don't get one though - there's plenty of other tables and all have decent views. Had breakfast in the Club lounge as well which was good. Good access from this hotel along the Avenue Of Stars to the Star Ferry if wanting to go across to Hong Kong Island itself, although it is a 15 minute walk so be prepared. Overall excellent, friendly service from all hotel staff. Room very clean and well appointed. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Horizon Club rooms worth the extra

We loved our stay of 4 nights at the Shangri-La. We have stayed with them before in Bangkok and Shanghai, so I knew what to expect with regards to the quality of rooms and service and I was not disappointed. Hong Kong had been on the top of my to-do list for a long time, so we upgraded to a harbour view room for around £60 per night, to take advantage of the hotels location. Unfortunately, for the whole of our stay, HK was blanketed in a sea mist, which obscured our view somewhat. However at night, when the harbour was illuminated we did get to see some of the amazing view. The room was fabulous, with a lovely comfortable bed and a great bathroom.
We had breakfast included in our rate, which was very nice, everything you could possibly want.
We used the hotel restaurant one evening for the buffet, which at around £100 for the two of us with one drink each, we thought was pricey, that said, HK is pricey, very very pricey! We did notice towards the end of our meal a sign with a drinks deal, which would have been handy, but this was not pointed out to us when we took our seats, so something to look out for, if you fancy a few drinks with your meal. We looked at the hotels Italian restaurant, which has an amazing harbour view (or would have, with the right weather conditions) and the Chinese restaurant, both looked really nice, but were very expensive, and as we were both fighting with jet-lag we decided against it. You certainly want to be fully awake whilst paying those sorts of prices!!
The hotel location is good. A short walk away is the star ferry terminal and one of the stops for the open topped bus is very close by. This is more expensive than in other cities, at around £36 for two days, but we did get good value from it. There are three routes including one that goes to Stanley on the south of the Island, and a 1 hr night tour.
I would highly recommend the Kowloon Shangri-La, although if we are lucky enough to visit HK again, we have decided we would stop at the Island Shangri-La, to get the view across to Kowloon, and hopefully the sun will shine for us next time!

Room Tip: The harbour view rooms are fabulous

The Shangri-la hotels never disappoint and whilst this is not the best of them it is very good. Excellent service, good clean and comfortable rooms and only a few minutes walk from the heart of Kowloon
