“Central Location in Kowloon.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2013

From the Ferry terminal, it was a walking distance to the hotel. The room is a little dated but still very clean. Tsim Sha Tsui and the other key shopping areas were within walking distance. There were also restaurants and a 7-Eleven across.
Please make sure you specify what type of room you want, though. I requested for a queen sized bed but got 2 single beds instead.

This is a good, solid, travellers' hotel - not particularly fancy, but comfortable if you're staying on business and using the hotel as a base. My room was perfectly adequate - no bath, but a good shower. The bed was comfortable. You may read comments about the speed of the lifts. They are very fair... Waiting for a lift, particularly at breakfast time took ages and was quite infuriating. Staff were friendly and the breakfast was good.

At the very core of it, there was nothing really fancy about the hotel. It is truly a practical accommodation with just the basics to keep travellers sheltered and showered. As it turns out, this humble hotel was all needed during our 5 day vacation in a busy city like Hong Kong!

We were so exhausted (from sightseeing and plenty of walking) when we came back to the room each evening that we were just thankful there was a comfortable bed waiting for us, and a soothing hot shower that we can enjoy after such a long day.

The room was cozy, with a good view of the city skyline and the harbour. The bathroom was a tad small but functioning. And best of all the room was kept very clean.

Location-wise, it was between the Jordan and Austin MTR Station so it was really easy getting around the city.

My only gripe would be the lifts. They took ages to come, and because only 1-2 lifts (out of the 4 lifts) are working at any point of time, the lifts ended up being really crowded as everyone would try squeezing in. This has been most unpleasant. I hope that they improve the lifts frequency, as that would really make the hotel guests happy after an exhausting day around the city.

Overall, it was a good stay. Like I said before, it is a very practical hotel. Nothing fancy, but sometimes all you need are just the basics :)

Room Tip: Choose the harbour view rooms!

I have traveled to many countries and had lots of experiences. I like to think I am a fair reviewer and I don't expect gold service all the time, but this hotel really misses the mark on most all points.

I read a review about the lifts being slow. My first thought was that this was a really petty thing to complain about. Then I experienced it first hand. Four lifts are available but one was always out of service. The lifts are not slow. Slow would be an improvement. I believe they must be operated by exhausted mice in a pulley wheel. It is really beyond acceptable when you have to wait 2:14 (yep, I timed it) for an elevator to go from the top floor to the lobby when it only stops at two floors in between.

Next, the internet. I have been living in mainland China for nearly 5 years and so upon reaching Hong Kong, I expected to have decent internet. Wrong! The wifi (no wired option exists at the hotel) cuts in and out so often that surfing the net is a forlorn adventure. I called to complain about the internet being horribly sluggish. A manager came up to my floor and stood in the hallway testing the internet. "The signal is good here, sir." Here being the middle of my hallway. I asked if I was expected to sit in the hall to surf online. Then I asked him to try going to a website like google or yahoo. He tried. After 3 minutes waiting for the page to load on his mobile device, he said he would call the hotel's ISP to ask about it. Didn't get any better my remaining three days.

The next item up for bid, room service. The moral of this tale is that there is none. I have not been in a hotel that offered nothing in the way of room service since I stayed at a capsule hotel in Tokyo. Of course, being a capsule hotel, I never expected room service to be available. But when I stay at a hotel in Hong Kong that isn't a hostel or a budget motel, I am a bit disappointed to find that after working for 14 hours in the sun, I am not able to enjoy a meal delivered to my room. Am I missing something here?

Speaking of food services, let's talk about the bar area. They have live music. Nice to have in a hotel bar/restaurant. Unless of course the act has a small peavy speaker at the spot where the keyboardist and singer are. Then, it tends to be a less than pleasant experience if you are within 15 feet of said speaker, which is where half the tables are. I highly recommend that if you end up at this hotel, eat elsewhere.

One a positive note, this hotel offers something that I would like to see in a lot more hotels. Self-service laundry facilities. I actually enjoy doing my own laundry because I know it'll be done right. $50HK is pretty reasonable to me for washing and drying, especially when you consider that the washing machine dispenses soap automatically so you don't have to buy any. The machines worked great.

The first night I was there my shower backed up after about 15 minutes of the water running and something was floating out of the drain that was brown in nature. I resembled bits of feces, but I can't say for sure that it was. Told the staff about it and from the next day on there was no problem, but I hated even setting foot in the shower for one second longer than absolutely necessary after that.

No gym facilities, no pool, but then it's only a self advertised 3.5 star hotel. Never heard any one advertise them selves in half stars. That alone should really indicate that they are trying to impress but just come up short of the goal.

The hotel is located in a good area, but then again, so are others that are better.

All in all, I would not stay here again. The beds were extremely firm in nature, which I do not enjoy, the windows don't open even a little, so no fresh air for you, the showers deliver hot water in bursts and the price just isn't justified with all these shortcomings.

Room Tip: Find another hotel. The Nathan Hotel is a great place to stay. Better services, not far away, simila...

Room: Stayed 5 nights towards end of August. I did the reservation online on their website almost month earlier. Asked for and got a non-smoking HarborView at Level 21 upon check-in. No bathtub in room; shower cube cramped; room size just right for a 3-member family, might feel cramped if more folks staying than that; but otherwise clean and great.View from the room was excellent. You could have harbor view breakfast/dinner right in the room! You can refill drinking water at the corridor water cooler if you need more.
Wifi worked great for my iphone in my hotel room for at least the first 3 days. Hotel is right off the Nathan road shopping belt and nearby MTR/bus-stops.

Getting here: Took cab from airport. Cost about 260HKD. If you are a family, dont bother taking the AirportExpress/bus thingy. Money-wise its almost the same or worse deal with all the hassle included.

Food: Wellcome super market is right opposite and will help stock up with fruits/milk/water/bread/cheese etc. There are no 'vegetarian' food options, (esp breakfast) nearby this hotel. So your best bet is TST, esp for indian vegetarian folks. The United Cafe (next to Cafe De Corral) has vegetarian sandwich/pasta options for lunch/dinner; if you are too tired to hunt around.

Lifts: Never had much trouble with the hotel lifts as some of the other reviews had pointed out. Perhaps it was a function of occupancy/season. But it seemed fine on both weekends/weekdays that we stayed. Note that though the hotel has 24 levels, only levels 12-24 or so are hotel rooms; so the lift stops at Ground, Breakfast/Mezzanine and then to straight to Level12.

I always used Jordan MTR which was a 5-7 mins walk away. Hotel concierge was good with directions/recommendations for prominent sight-seeing points.

TST is nearby. Take mini-bus 6 right outside the hotel to get there in style :) It's about 2/3 stops only and importantly seems to run every 2 mins the whole day. Walking to TST is possible but would take almost 20 mins or so. You could cut-across through the next-door Kowloon park to reach TST. I relied on CityMaps2Go app for walking directions.
ICC-100 is about 20-30HKD cab ride away from this hotel. As is Mong-kok, TST etc.If you are say a 4-member group, this will work cheaper/convenient than taking MTR.

Money-changing: It looks like Chungking mansions is 'THE' place to get the best rates.

General: None of the cabbies seem to understand English. So be sure to get the 'cantonese'/mandarin flash-card for your destination at the concierge before you head out. And be sure to 'fold' the paper correctly with only the relevant text showing. My card said 'Ocean Park -- Bus XXX -Admiratly'. And i got dumped at the bus-stop first :)

MTR: Found it more efficient than Singapore. But if you had a stroller or luggage, you would've to haul it up/down a flight of stairs within the MTR as well as across the turnstiles. Overall this part felt more like the NYC metro.

I would stay here again.

Stayed there for three nights. It is a walking distance to most of the well known places. Staff was friendly though it took a while for check in. Included breakfast was quite tasty with mostly chinese dishes. Rooms were small but clean. Restaurants across the street serve fantastic fare.
Would certainly recommend

Stayed here for three nights, had a nice harbour view room, although the room was small (hong kong) it was clean and worked well. I noticed other reviews complained about the lifts, they must have fixed them, we were on the 22nd floor and had no trouble. Staff was polite and efficent, had brunch one morning at the hotel restaurant. It was allright . We would stay here again. Go Boy Scouts. Be Prepared.
