“Best location in Hong kong”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2009

I chose the Bishop Lei on the basis of its intriguing ownership, the radical location and the large number of reviews from satisfied guests. Well, I'm another satisfied guest!
I came to Hong Kong for the Electronic Fairs at both Wan Chai on the isalnd and at Asia Expo near the new airport. Both were supremely easy to get to from Bishop Lei. They have a shuttle bus direct to Airport Express at Central and to the Convention/Exhibition Centre at Wan Chai. However, I didn't organise myself to use these much so took taxis instead - and in Hong Kong they're cheap and plentiful. Only 10-15 minutes got me to where I needed to go. The Airport Express train takes about 30 minutes to travel to Asia Expo - so you can get to the Airport from Bishop Lei in under an hour!
Bearing in mind several reviewers who warned that standard rooms at Bishop Lei were very small I booked a Bay View Suite - and at around 1100 HK dollars the room was great value compared to a 3-star hotel in London or Liverpool. The suite had two rooms and an incredible view down to the skyscapers round the bay. Clean, modern and with all mod-cons (aircon and TV in both rooms, free WiFi, large shower and bright lighting throughout). Hong Kong still uses UK electrical plugs which was great for me - the room had lots of plugs for all the gadgets we can't do without these days.
The 3 lifts from the lobby were fast to all floors (23 in total) and the staff were attentive and polite.
The hotel is near the fantastic mid-levels escalators - making access down to SoHo and Central easy and quick in both directions. Within an hour of arriving in Hong Kong we were walking down the hill taking in the great HK atmosphere! Also nearby is the fantastic free Botanical Gardens and Zoo - the reception staff will direct you down an amazing staircase between the hotel and the next door tower, via the Cathedral courtyard below (worth a peep inside), and a short walk down the road. Beware of neck-ache in Hong Kong from gawping at all the amazing towers!
Don't hesitate - try the Bishop Lei for excellent value and an interesting location. And no, they aren't paying me for this review.

Small rooms and bathrooms have everything necessary for a very comfortable stay if you're on a budget, though we didn't manage to get free breakfasts like the other recent reviewer!

Others have written about the location, and being slightly away from the madding crowds, suited us perfectly. The staff were always friendly and efficient, though we were slightly disappointed that fresh milk for tea was so expensive from room service - but we soon realised a supermarket was nearby. Other slight niggles were a) the bed being not quite long enough for my not-particularly-tall husband and b) the rubber door stop on the floor near the bed that we kept stubbing our feet on. The door stop isn't needed as the door opens onto the bottom of the bed anyway.

Appreciated the checkout time of 12 noon.

All in all, a great experience.

Staying here was fantastic. Great room, good deal, dynamite location, lovely staff, free breakfast, fantastic pool. Seriously, it was an excellent place to stay while in HK. I am sure room rates vary a lot depending on when you're there, but we got a good deal on ours.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to HK on a budget. I've stayed there three times now, and although the rooms are small, the value is phenomenal and rooms, bathrooms and public areas are kept very clean.

The location won't be for everyone, being up in the Mid-Levels, above Soho. However, this means that in the worst of the summer humidity, it is a couple of degrees cooler than down in Central. It also means that it's nice and cheap, and the outdoor covered escalator goes past the end of the street.

A comfortable, clean, friendly place to stay on Hong Kong Island. The staff was very accommodating and attentive. The hotel is a short taxi ride from Central and few minutes walk from the Midlevels Escalator and supermarkets. Maximized to make the most of space, the rooms are recently refurbished in a green and white motif, coffee station, free wireless internet, in-room safe, flat screen tv (with many international and English language channels), single bed, desk, and wonderful bedding. Excellent value, especially for Hong Kong. I actually prefer to be a little bit away from city center as the hotel has a very calm and relaxed feeling about it - a nice place to retreat to at the end of the day. Book online for the best rate.

My wife and I just returned from a 2 week stay at this hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The staff are extremely courteous and helpful. The food in the restaurant is reasonably priced. Nice sized pool with life guard on duty. Free shuttle bus to subway and to airport train.

We stay a night in this hotel, overall everything is in order. The room is small but if you just need a place to sleep and put your luggage then it is more than enough. The price is reasonable for a hotel located near The Peak. Although its location is not in the center of city but it is easy to reach there provided remember to use the outdoor escalator!! Never ever follow the Ice House Street though from the map it seem quite near to reach the hotel but in fact that road is extremely steep unless you like to climb moutain!! The hotel actually has shuttle bus to Admiralty MTR station so do check with the hotel how to get their shuttle bus in order to reach the hotel. Using the Asia longest outdoor escalotor you can walk down to Lan Kwai Fong and Soho area in 10-15 minutes time. From hotel to the escalator it only takes you less than 5 minutes walk.
For those who like to spend time at The Peak, this hotel is recommended as it's not too far from the top nor the cable car station. In fact, according to the staff we can walk to the station which take about 15 minutes. We spend around HKD42 to reach The Peak by taxi and HKD45 from The Peak to Lan Kwai Fong so I think that's quite reasoneable. I will stay here again for my next HK visit.
