“Great stay in HK”
Reviewed 29 July 2014 via mobile

This hotel is very well located.
You're directly located to the pier to mainland, or walking distance to central... If weather is not to hot.
We got a renovated rooms with a great view, at club level.
I recommend club level room for the incredible value it gives with the access at last floor, it's amazing view, free drinks anytime during the day.
The staff was very polite and helpful.
Will definitely come back next time in HK

We enjoyed the 8 to 8 deal at the Hyatt for the 4th time. This hotel and it's employees epitomises the meaning of five star. We were at the Hyatt for the 21st anniversary of our very first date and we were made to feel very special with an upgrade. We didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back.

Stayed one night out of my own expense in HK after a business trip in HK staying 3 nights at the Conrad.

The decor and atmosphere of Grand Hyatt is slightly better than Conrad. I got upgraded (as platinum member) to a newly furnished room which is a Japanese design. The working table is large and the TV is HD not like the one (non-HD) in Conrad. The TV channels are also much choices. I regret I was only staying one night. View from the window is good getting a good view of the harbor.

The only downside is that Grand Hyatt is not connected to a major upscale mall so have to take a taxi to and from say the IFC mall (10 minutes and the cloest) in the hot and humid weather in HK. The hotel is next to the convention center so if you are there for a convention it is a good hotel but there are hotels that are next to a major upscale shopping mall such as Four Seasons is connected to the IFC mall or Ritz Carlton is connected to the Elements (another major upscale mall in east Kowloon). So eating late in the evening is not convenient without a connecting mall.

Did not sample the food as I already overate the first few days in HK.

Room Tip: Try to nice to get an upgrade.

Negatives:
This was a great property, but the location is a little far from public transportation. (unless you're talking about the Star Ferry, which is somewhat nearby.

Also, my wife and I usually bid on another site for hotels, and sometimes these bid reservations don't include breakfast. However, every other property that we have stayed at in Hong Kong has always upgraded us to include breakfast without fail - except for the Grand Hyatt. Not a big deal, but was a minor damper.

The gym in the basement is very nice, but can get a little warm.

Positives:
Beds are very comfortable.
Lighting is very nice in the rooms.
The feature where the curtains come and block out the sunlight is also nice if you're sleeping in.
Love the overhead/verticle showerhead.

The hotel location was spectacular, especially the views of the harbor. It is in a location next to convention center; there is a mix of excellent services for the office workers that make eating out reasonable and high quality. It's especially worthwhile if you are eligible for Club level upgrade, since the service is exceptional. Also, be sure to plan for swimming, a great outdoor pool.

My wife and I stayed in a Plateau Room on 11/F for 1 night on 5 July. We got a gift coupon from a dear friend, but the room rate is HK$7,000 per night on the rate card.

The Room:
The view is good, facing central and upper Wanchai district. If it weren't for the eyesore of the construction site downstairs (the Shatin-Central subway line to be completed in 2018), the view will be perfect. The room is updated with a rather interesting layout, set in a birch light wood tone and dark marble. The bed / sleep area is on a raised birch floor platform. Instead of a couch, there are two tatami zaisu chairs and a small coffee table. The open wash basin and extra-large vitality station is a dream come true for ladies. Another feature is the glass shower and bath so that you can enjoy the Central view while washing the stress away. The highlight is the humongous built-in bathtub that accommodates a small family easily. But if you're going with a friend whom you feel shy showing your naked body to, give it a second thought. The toilet is in a separate room (without window) and there's a carpeted vestibule at the entrance for taking off your shoes. All the furniture is nicely tailor-made. But I don't dig the vertical wooden louvre shades at all. You can't completely push them aside or hide them, leaving a big wooden vertical column at the centre of the window that blocks the view.

The pool:
The perk of staying on 11/F is that you can just walk out to the swimming pool on the same floor in your bath robe. However, don't be misled by the extra wide-angle shot in the profile photo. The pool is in organic shape, but the narrowest part is like 2 metres wide. It gets really crowded in the afternoon as it's shared by Renaissance Hotel next door too. There are definitely not enough lounge chairs and there isn't a system to identify which chair is vacant (as people just leave without removing the towels). We found out they gave away a free virgin mojito to all pool guests on their FB page. But their staff didn't seem to know about it at first. After checking, he told me it's served after 2pm and only upon request. If it's a giveaway, why don't you just automatically serve it whenever a guest comes in? Given the room rate, a virgin mojito really doesn't harm your P&L. I ended up ordering a draught beer (the server not knowing what brand of draught that was) for HK$90. The beer was lukewarm and disgusting. BTW, free icy cold Bonaqua water is provided in unlimited supply.

The Spa
Our coupon included a one-hour massage session for two. The signature plateau course really isn’t our favourite treatment. The therapists are friendly and technically good, but the treatment itself is too mild to our taste. We did tell the therapist to go harder, but it’s hard for them to go hard when it’s mostly long lingering strokes. The floral tea and fruit tea after massage were great and it’d be nice to have those teas available in our room. The 60-min massage is listed HK$980 on the rate card.

The buffet breakfast (G/F cafe)
Nice mix of Chinese, Asian and Western food. Egg station, made-to-order waffles, noodles and juice bar are nice touches. There are many kinds of fruits, cereals, cheeses. Dim-sum is of excellent restaurant-quality, not cheap frozen stuff from most buffet.

We ate at Steakhouse in the hotel. Please read my separate review.

BTW, we may not look like locals, but it's really important that all staff assume all guests understand Cantonese. They didn't say anything terribly offensive, but the staff did refer to us as "they" 佢地 in our face... It doesn't sound as bad in English, but they might as well say "this lady and gentleman here" in Cantonese.

All in all, i'd recommend it if it fits your budget. And it's cool to swim amidst a concrete jungle sipping cocktail.

Room Tip: Pick a room with Central view or Tsimshatsui view.
