I just wrote a very unhappy and disappointing review of our partners dinner at the Waterside Terrace at the Island Shangri La. I wanted to share a much much more pleasant experience that I had at breakfast the next morning at the Grand Hyatt main cafe / restaurant.
I was still a little annoyed at paying over 1,000 hkd per head for some of the worst service at a decent hk hotel that I've ever had.
One of my partners brought his family to breakfast. His 8 year old daughter is super duper cute, witty and smart as a whip. She instantly put a smile on my face.
Beyond the cute kids, the service at the Grand Hyatt guaranteed that I kept smiling all morning. The food was fine, nothing ground breaking but perfectly edible. The service was fantastic! The staff paid attention to us, made sure we had everything we needed and the tone of communications was like the way things used to be at the Peninsula before the handover (ok I'm really old...). This was a particularly pleasant surprise since breakfast was a buffet!
At one point my partner asked his seven year old son to get some orange juice for him which required him to ask someone where the juice station was. His son apparently was very nervous (he's pretty shy) and when we saw him on his return path to our table, it was clear that the restaurant manager had accompanied him all the way there and all the way back!
I've never tipped so much for a breakfast buffet in my life and it was worth every penny!
