Good location & view of the harbour

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Sept 2011
After a delayed flight we took the MTR airport express from the airport to Kowloon Station. This cost $90HK per person (£7.50 each) From There it was only a short & inexpensive taxi ride to the Harbour Plaza Metropolis Hotel.
As we had booked a "Club Harbourview " room we were taken to the 20th floor to complete check in at the club lounge where they were serving free drinks & nibbles. Our room was small but comfortable and appeared to be the standard size for hotel rooms in Hong Kong.
The room came with an en-suite bathroom & a good view of the harbour. Whilst everything was clean & tidy the water in the shower had a peculiar smell of onions & curry! There was no lingering smell & I've no idea why is smelt that way, it didn't spoil our trip & it wouldn't put me off staying there again.
By having a Harbourview Club room it enabled us to take our meals in the club lounge.
Being on the 20th floor it has lovely views of the harbour & across to Hong Kong island. It also has an outdoor terrace which is a delightful place to eat your breakfast. The club lounge also serves afternoon tea until 5.30pm & then has free drinks & hors d'oeuvres from 6pm - 8pm.
All the staff that we encountered spoke very good English, they were polite, courteous & very helpful.
There is a free regular shuttle bus to the Kowloon Hotel which is very close to the main shopping area and within easy walking distance of the nearest MTR station.
Best Value - The Star Ferry between Kowloon & Hong Kong Island costs about 20p and is a great way to see the harbour.
Worth a visit - The Peak on Hong Kong Island is the main tourist attraction and offers great views from the top. (weather permitting) We used the outdoor escalators instead of walking uphill & then walked through the pleasant Zoo & Botanical Gardens (Both free of charge). For the last leg of the climb we boarded the Peak Tram which was a much better option than trying to walk up the steep climb.
Something different - Try the Jumbo floating restaurant in Aberdeen Harbour. It took a little while to get there & we didn't see many westerners however it was worth a visit. To get there we took the MTR to Central Station on Hong Kong Island & then caught the number 70 bus to Aberdeen. We then caught a free Sampan out to the restaurant for dinner. The food was good & it was a really good experience.

This hotel was a very excellent choice for a 6 night stay for my wife and I. The location, rooms, service, and amenities were very nice.

The location was great, we are both 30 so a 10 minute walk along the harbor to nathan road was easy and fun. There are many cafes and places to grab a beer along the walk as well which made it seem shorter. The Hung Hom station is located next door and accsible via a covered walkway, this is a main hub station similar to grand central in NYC. The Hung Hom station allowed us to travel anywhere we wanted quick and easily which was perfect. In the lobby you can purchase an "Octopus" card which was a great choice for us. The subway is unbelievably clean, no eating drinking etc in paid area.

The hotel is also attached to a large mall which was great for picking up bottled water, food, and snacks at a very cheap price. A room beer is 50HKD ( 8ish US) whereas in the mall a 12 pack was 61 and waters were 2 for a dollar. The mall also has a bunch of food options, we tried the Japanese restaurant and it was good. The mall is very clean, large, and loaded with fun stuff.

The rooms are bit small however I only paid 98USD a night which is roughly 700HKD and was given a club floor room with an amazing few of the harbor and the HK skyline. I was really worried as an American paying 98 dollars seemed way too low a price( a US Motel 6 is more than that now), I was amazed at quality for price. The rooms do have a dated CRT tv but I wasn't there to watch BBC anyway so that did not bother me. The room service was quick and effective and always left what was requested. The bathroom had a great glass enclosed shower and was very nice marble etc.

Service was great and the staff was very friendly, spoke English, and generally seemed eager to help.

Amenities such as the gym and pool are very nice. I used the gym 3 times and it was wonderful, about 15 total treadmills, bikes, stair steppers. The pool was really awesome and I was very surprised at the great "pool scene" I didn't imagine HK to have one. There was a nice little bar and food stand(I would bring your own beer). Very clean and modern. I arranged a car service for about 70 bucks and it was nice, I was greeted by name and taken to the service area where I was picked up in an S550, not bad for 600 HKD.

Overall I would highly recommend this hotel. It is a 3.5 - 4 star for sure and if you get a good rate it really adds to the feeling of value. That being said I could see where the room could make or break the stay. You will want a high floor with an odd number room as they face the harbor.

Very nice hotel, a bit off the "center" of things, but close to the metro and a major mall. The hotel runs a handy shuttle to downtown area (Kowloon) every 20 mins. Front desk was very pleasant and helpful with checkin and advice. English skills were excellent.

As others have said, the room was a tad small, but the views of the harbor more than made up for it. The outside pool was nicely maintained and with a pleasant temperature: warm enough to just hop right in but cool enough to be refreshing.

The bathroom was REALLY small but clean and nice amenities. Warning: The little bottles were all lined up in the shower. When I took my shower, I used the shampoo and then what I ASSUMED to be the conditioner. It was the hand lotion. :-) Be careful!

Room tip: Ask nicely (w/ a smile) for a room on a higher floor with view of the harbor. We didn't even have to pay for the upgrade!

This was the hotel included in the Hong Kong "extension" of our package China tour. After the large rooms of the (mainland) Chinese hotels, Harbor Plaza's room seemed small. I realized that Hong Kong rooms are small and Harbor Plaza's room was OK for a tourist hotel.

Furnishings were somewhat dated. TV was not flat screen, which was surprising. Nice bonus was the view. It wasn't a harbor view, but at least we weren't looking at the next building since the hotel is not located next to other tall buildings. Lobby was large and impressive.

The staff speaks excellent English (especially compared to hotel staff of mainland Chinese hotels). Check-in and checkout were smooth.

Our package included the breakfast buffet. Quality of food was decent and the variety was good. The view from the cafe was lovely. Even so, I would not pay an additional HK$164 for the buffet if I booked on my own.

A small shopping center is attached to the hotel. It has a laundry service (pay by the pound; much cheaper than the hotel prices), 7-11 (where we purchased local prepaid phone sim cards), supermarket (for buying bottled water and snacks) and Watsons drugstore. There is also a fast food court on the upstairs of the mall.

The free shuttle to Nathan Road, the main shopping street, was very convenient since it ran every 20 minutes. However, those who want their hotel located in the middle of luxury shopping should not choose Harbor Plaza since it is a little ways away from Nathan.

Very convenient to a main subway station and to busses.

Be advised that the hotel charges for internet usage in the room (using the Ethernet cord on the desk). It is HK$120 per 24-hour period.

Summary, we were very satisfied with our stay and we would choose Harbor Plaza Metropolis again.

Good hotel with great staff, great food, centrally located, gr8 indian restaurant within the hotel complex

Only 1 things saddening was the size of the rooms. Before you enter its finishes. Congested.

We stayed here for 5 nights and were delighted with the location of the hotel - a covered walkway connects it more or less directly into Hung Hom station, the bus station is a few minutes' walk from the adjoining mall and there was a never ending supply of very reasonable taxis from the front door of the hotel. We liked staying on the Kowloon side as we had views of the Hong Kong skyline from our room. There was also lots to do on this side and access across the harbour was fast and fun on the ferries.

We signed up for the executive package on arrival but on reading the small print decided it wasn't good value for us. We cancelled it after the first night but they kept us in the 'executive' room on the 21st floor anyway.

I'd been warned hotel rooms in HK were small and there certainly wasn't much room, but the shower room was spacious and the room was well set out to maximise the area we did have. We had a small fridge, microwave and sink unit in the room which was handy.

Breakfast was not included - the buffet was fine but a little on the expensive side. We stuck with it for a few days until we found the fast food outlet in Hung Hom station, and ate very satisfactorily there for a fraction of the cost. We didn't eat in the hotel at night - once we went out in the morning we rarely made it back before bedtime. The hotel is attached to a shopping mall with plenty of other restaurants if you wanted to avoid the hotel prices.

The staff were great and very helpful. The lobby was airy and very busy - one bugbear was that for a hotel this size there should have been more than the 2 couches hidden behind the stairs for guests to hang out at when waiting for tours etc.

Room tip: consider a twin room rather than a double - they're a bit bigger
