Location wise, the hotel is easily accessible as it's located just off Fortress Hill MTR. The room is pretty compact but you get your basic toiletries. The hotel decor is dated, but decent enough for short stays of couple of days. Customer service definitely need more improvement. I checked in with Agoda voucher but receptionist refused to honour the Agoda voucher, for pure reason that it wasn't the same as the full name in my passport. That means I can't check-in using the voucher until the hotel has received confirmation from Agoda. I've used Agoda for years around the world and never had such problem. And while the receptionist indicated they never had problems with Agoda, she wanted to make sure. I had no choice but to put a room deposit while trying to sort it out with Agoda.

Room Tip: There's a lot of travel groups, so it's probably a good idea to get a room away from the travel groups if possible as it can get a little noisy.

have stayed at the Newton twice, once with my wife and once on business. Both times I have had
little to complain about, service was good and friendly , the evening buffet dinner , both my wife and I thought was very good. Yes the rooms are a little small and the hotel is not super modern, but what are you doing staying in your room when you have Hong Kong outside your hotel waiting for you. Its a reasonable place to stay in H.K.

We traveled in a group of 6 for the Hong Kong 7's. Read the reviews before we got there and were concerned about the Hotel. Glad i did read them because our expectations were very low!
Yes the rooms we were allocated were small and the bed rather hard. But our experience with check in was positive and rapid. The room was clean, had a view of the high rises next door. The bathroom was also small but adequate. Water pressure was good for showers and hot. The location was not glamorous but it was safe and secure. Best of all it was close to the train station so within minutes you could be anywhere in Hong Kong. Five minutes to Causeway Bay, ten minutes to the mainland and Nathan Road shops. We found the staff helpful in all respects.
So when value is considered we though the Newton was ok. It is relatively, very cheap so i am prepared to accept the shortcomings. I used the savings to buy a new suit! Which was delivered to the Newton. I asked the person on the desk to look out for the delivery, he found me when I walked in and handed me the suit. Great service. Cannot comment on the meals as i did not eat there but a travelling companion commented the the breakfast was "pretty good". I found a great breakfast place around the corner.

Dreadful experience. The plumbing work sucks, literally. The staff took about 40 minutes to check us in, even though we had already booked ages ago. Went to watch rugby and Australian Rugby Union official organisers " We Love Rugby" should be ashamed of putting us there amidst the crap they regard as a Hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid any room.

We stayed for 7 apalling nights some 8/9 years ago at this dirty run down dump, and looking at some recent reviews by other unfortunates, nothing has changed. Reception lobby contained a beautiful Chinese carpet which looked as though it had been used by a safari park. It was marginally more soiled than our room carpet / chair / bedlinen / towels.
The view from our room resembled a slum in some third world country. But probably the worst experience was having to endure the horrendous colour scheme in nearby Forest Hill MTR station. Colour chart reference: vomit green. Disgusting. We revisited HKG some years after our stay at Newton and steeled ourselves to return just to see if anything had changed. NO. Still the same stains on the carpet, same smell, the entire hotel begging to be pulled down.
WE have stayed in many hotels in HKG over many years. The Newton is, undeniably. quite the lowest rated establishment we have ever had the misfortune to come across.
If you value your sanity / health / hard earned cash, DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL.
