“Great Hotel in the middle of Mong Kok chaos”
Reviewed 20 June 2010

The hotel was clean, the rooms were a bit dated but sufficient. The bed was comfortable, we had a flat screen tv and air conditioning, and that's all we need anyway.

We had to pay for internet service which sucked. For an "upscale" hotel which people pay good $ for, we hoped that would be included.

We had been looking forward to using the pool after a long day in humid, busy Hong Kong, and it was okay.. but, we thought there would be music and maybe a bar where we can buy beer. Nope. There was a hot tub as well where you can relax - that was nice.

The fitness centre is large and fully equipped, but I didn't use it.

The location of the hotel is right in the heart of Mong Kok. Several metro stations are nearby and it's pretty easy to get around. If I were to go back to Hong Kong, I would prefer being closer to the harbour in Kowloon or on Hong Kong Island itself since many of the attractions (Causeway Bay, Happy Valley, Victoria Peak, getting to Lantau Island) would be more accessible. Though, as I said, the metro is very easy to use and very efficient. So, if you like to be in the centre of all the "local" action, this is a good place to be. The Ladies Market is a 10 minute walk away, and there are several other local market areas right around the hotel.

We've just finished our 8 day stay at the Royal Plaza hotel and overall we found our stay very good. In particular, we were surprised by just how good the location was. Mong Kok is a vibrant and bustling area of Kowloon - it felt far more 'real' than our last stay in HK at the Tsim Sha Tsui tourist trap. The hotel is in a prime location - about 10 minutes walk to the MTR, and sitting right over the rail line (to access the New Territories or the Mainland). The Ladies Market, Flower Market and the Bird Garden are only a few minutes' walk. Most conveniently, the hotel is located right above a classy shopping mall.

As we spent most of our budget on the hotel (which we got for a reasonable price through wotif.com) we decided to save on eating out. Fortunately, the shopping centre has an excellent food court that offered some very cheap Asian dishes. It was not unusual for us (a family of five with three kids under 5) to eat out for about $80 HKD. Great value, super hygienic and very atmospheric.

The hotel rooms were very nicely appointed (we stayed on the 19th floor). The room attendants were prompt and did an excellent job. We found good service with the door men as well. Our only real complaint was the check in staff and a few others. The hotel made a mistake with our request for interconnecting rooms. While the problem was fixed to our satisfaction, the feeling of the check in staff towards us was antarctic to say the least. Over time, they did seem to warm to us somewhat, which certainly made us feel more welcome.

In general, we don't agree with a lot of the posters that this hotel and HK in general is child-friendly. I would say 'child-neutral' is more like it. We live in Asia and travel a fair bit with our three young kids. We are used to the stares, the photo-taking and the pointing that come our way travelling with three blonde-haired kids. In HK, unlike say Singapore or Malaysia, this level of attention is certainly high but is not often accompanied by friendly smiles as in other parts of the world.

Overall, a good hotel and we would definitely stay there again, if only for the superb location.

the room may look spacious and clean in the first place but its infected with BED BUGS!
Horrible, horrible, Horrible!
For bed bugs to exist in a four star rated hotel in Mong Kong East Train Station.
I stayed in the hotel in room 1313 and 1311 for 3 nights stay two days ago. initially , for the first night i thought its just some mosquito bite and didnt pay attention to it. I had no experience from getting bed bugs bite before and upon leaving, the bed bugs bite get more and more and spreaded to hands and neck. Its awful and pain plus itchy. Worst of all, i had to spend few hundred bucks to see skin specialist and now i'm still scracthing since the ithciness is intolerable.

I'd filed a complaint to the hotel but they've yet to get back to me.

I will not recommend anyone to stay in this hotel particularly room 1313 especially the bed right beside the kitchen basin. My brother had the same problem with me as well!

Its very irresponsible n unhygienic for a four star hotel to have bed bugs though they may look gorgeous from the exterior.

I went to hongkong with my family and we had two rooms adjoining and we had a lovely time there. The hotel was well connected with the metro stations and we used to walk to the nearest station and catch a train to go to all places. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. myself and my brother shared one room and our parents stayed in the other. the hotel itself is in a supermarket and we were making our own breakfast with stuff from the supermarket. the hotel also had a free bus service which we used for going to harbour plaza etc.

My husband and I checked into the hotel but were told that we would have to pay extra for wireless internet or any internet access for that matter. We decided to upgrade for $65 a day to get a larger room with internet, and complimentary breakfast. It was hefty, but the room itself is quite spacious for a room in HK.

The Room:
The room has a LCD tv, ample space for luggage, a safe, very good lighting and great air conditioning. In HK weather you will probably need to have this on the whole time just to keep the humidity down. The furniture is not exactly new but I wouldn't say it's worn. One of the problems with the room was the paint was peeling off the ceiling. Chips of paint were literally flaking off the ceiling and onto the desk where we plugged in our laptop. The single most impressive feature of the room was the bed. The bed is firm, supportive and offers a great night's rest. In the closet I found a memory foam pillow -- another nice addition.

The bathroom:
Clean, spacious, well ventilated. Good amenities (soap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner, hair dryer), clean cotton towels. The bathroom scale didn't work though. Can't complain overall. I just wasn't a fan of the sliding door to the bathroom. It's cumbersome to slide open and close. The only full length mirror is on the back of the sliding door, oddly enough.

The hotel's La Scala breakfast buffet would be outrageously overpriced if not for it being included in our package..... breakfast for two: $64! If it's included in your package, go for it. Good selection of western and Chinese foods and tastes pretty decent. Service is quick and courteous.

Because we upgraded to the Executive Club on the 18th floor, we get to use the Executive Club lounge on the 19th floor. It offers a more private breakfast buffet with a cappuccino/espresso machine. The lounge also features afternoon tea and biscuits and an early evening snack routine. It's a nice perk for people who seem to be jet lagged and just need a place to get a bite to munch on.

The swimming pool was not usable during my stay.

I had stayed in the hotel the year before with my husband and went back again with my children. The hotel was very comfortable. Good rooms with all amenities. It was clean and spacious. No unwanted disturbance.
Placed on top of a the Plaza shopping mall, a train station & opening out into a bus station it is ideally located and very well connected. It aso has a shuttle bus to the city airport train terminus .
Women's market & the flower market & bird market are just nearby.
For all this I didnt find it too expensive.
